What is SWEET GAS?
Sweet gas is termed sweet, but not for its taste, or smell. It is a special type of natural gas, that we use as a fuel.
Natural gas, produced in oil refineries, or in natural gas processing plants, are categorized into two types. Sweet Gas and Sour gas. Any natural gas, under standard temperature and pressure, containing less than 5.7 micrograms of h 2 s, or hydrogen sulphide per cubic meter, is called a sweet gas. And above this level, it is sour gas.
Alternatively, we can say that, if a sample of natural gas contains less than 4 ppm of h 2 s gas, then it is sweet gas.
Why we categorize natural gas, in this way?
Well, natural gas is an essential source of energy. Its main ingredient is methane. Hydrogen sulfide is an impurity, that natural gas contains. Factories and households need regular supply of natural gas. But, hydrogen sulphide is a corrosive gas. It causes decay on the wall of metallic containers or pipes, that store and transport natural gas. Causing gas leakage, losses of valuable infrastructure, machineries. A lower level of hydrogen sulfide is less destructive than a higher one. Due to the fact, natural gas with low level hydrogen sulfide is highly demanded. This is why natural gas is categorized in sweet gas and saur gas. Sweet gas is less harmful to metallic gas containers. And a better choice for industrial purpose.
The methods in which, hydrogen sulphide is removed from the natural gas, is called sweetening of gas.
