  • I took a motorcycle ride to tour inside a World War II Submarine - the USS Silversides in Muskegon, Michigan.
The is part of the "Motorcycle in the Mitten" series. I live in Michigan - the mitten state - and I'm using the motorcycle as an excuse to travel and see some things in my home state.
The USS Silversides was one of the most successful submarines in the Pacific Theater during WWII, with 23 confirmed sinkings. She was launched in August, 1941 and commissioned December, 1941.
She was in Chicago after the war, where volunteers worked to restore her. She was moved to Navy Pier in 1979. In 1987 she was moved to Muskegon, Michigan, her current (and hopefully forever) home.
Her engines still start, with they do from time to time. She is part of the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum. Groups (like Scout Troops) can do sleepovers on her, too, which always sounded like fun to me!
It's a great piece of World War II history and having her in the water is really amazing. Watch the video to see the inside of this piece of American history, and imagine what it was like being stationed on a submarine. Did you know crew members got showers every two weeks?
The motorcycle is a KTM 390 Duke. I've only been a motorcycle rider a short time so I'm keeping most trips fairly close to home. The ride to the submarine goes along the West Michigan lakeshore and the scenic Père Marquette Beach.

Fascinating. It looks like Silversides had a few tours in Australia which is why there was a boomerang and an emu (not a flamingo lol) on the boards. I remember when we went on the Bowfin at Pearl Harbor it was very cramped and claustrophobic, amazing they fit so many sailors on them. Can't have smelt too good at the end of a tour! Thanks for sharing.

An emu makes much more sense - the color threw me off! She was in Australia for a bit and did some work around New Guinea, Solomon Islands, etc. With crew members only getting showers every two weeks, yeah, the smell could not have been pleasant!

I just found your channel. I live in Michigan as well (Kalamazoo). My wife and I just got into riding. We are planning lots of Michigan based trips. Great content! I guess I'll be busy watching for a while.
