  • I took a motorcycle ride to tour a WWII Normandy landing ship - the LST 393 in Muskegon, Michigan.
I'm a new motorcycle rider - I've only had my motorcycle endorsement a few weeks - and I'm starting to travel more by motorcycle.
I'm calling this series "Motorcyle in the Mitten". I live in Michigan - the mitten state - and I'm using the motorcycle as an excuse to travel and see some things here in my home state.
This one is the LST 393, a WWII era ship that was used in the Normandy landings. It's sitting in the water now, and serves as a Veteran's Museum.
The motorcycle is a KTM 390 Duke. Since I've only been a motorcycle rider for a very short time, I'm keeping most trips fairly close to my house. I take back roads so I get better scenery and, to be honest, I haven't ridden the bike on a highway yet!
In this video, I take the back roads into Muskegon, MI. I encounter loose stone on the road for the first time, though it wasn't too bad - just rough. I didn't use GPS navigation this trip, despite always being lost, because I don't have a good way to use it on the motorcycle. I had to remember how to get there using back roads, and I don't get too lost for once!
The LST ship is on the waterfront in Muskegon, Michigan.
LST stands for "Landing Ship Tank," though some crew members referred to them as "Large Slow Targets". More than a thousand of these LSTs were produced in a 3 year period during World War II. There are only two LST ships left today, and this is one of them.
This particular ship - LST 393 - was launched November 11, 1942. She made 75 voyages to foreign shores on 3 continents, including 30 round trips to the beaches of Normandy. She was decommissioned in 1946.
After the war she worked carrying cars from Muskegon, Michigan to Milwaukee, Wisconsin under the name Highway 16.
Today the LST 393 is a Veteran's Museum and you can wander its decks looking at the displays.
Come along for the motorcycle ride to get here and wander the ship with me!

By all means Preserve her. She's a Noble Ship, with a Heroic history.

I know - I would love to see her stay where she is, but with hull damage it's not going to be easy. They thought they had a location on land to keep it as a museum, but there's a dispute with the city over property. I hope it ends well - it's a such a historical treasure to have here.

That was fascinating. It must be very emotional seeing your Grandfather included in the display.😊

It's nice to see his photo there - I pull it up every time I go there. We're lucky to have two WWII vessels in our area - a lot of history for sure!
