I'm still convinced this is someone dubbing over his voice. He can't talk normal like the rest of us mortals. He definitely talks in his lows on the daily.
Phil you are such a badass. Whitechapel is so fucking brutal and so are your brutal growls, lows mids whatever they are called. I'm just curious would you ever cover the song Evisceration Plague by Cannibal Corpse? Just wondering
phil, you are the best deathcore vocalist there is in my opinion. i want to be in a death metal band like cannibal corpse and your video here helped a lot. thanks so much
and because of Phil I went to Cattle Decapitation concert, you can see the video on my channel. Got couple of their T shirts, flags and holy fuck Travis Ryan is my favorite vocalist ever.
such a inspiration dude.... this video has really helped when my band had our debut a few weeks ago i was like a wimp on stage but now i think im gonna tear shit up so i just go for it everytime! so thanks dude
I have been doing vocals for about 7 years. I cant tell you how much of an inspiration you are to me. We all sit hoping that one day a vocalist of your calibre will release something like this and actually take the time to help out aspiring vocalists. Best fucking video ever. thanks
The tongue pressed to the roof of the mouth alters the frequency response of your oral cavity by changing its shape dramatically, effectively accentuating some frequencies and attenuating others.
to be honest, i've seen a lot of metalcore/deathcore bands out there. phil's performances with doing his vocals is completely flawless unlike most bands. phil will never screw up an important vocal part in his song and in my opinion i really think he is the best deathcore screamer out there.
Coming from an experienced vocalist (5 years)... Phil is fucking spot on with everything he said. I love the fact that he mentioned the tongue thing because I do that and I try to explain to people how it works. Such an amazing vocalist, and now he's giving out tips... that's just awesome.
I've been doing screams for about 2 years without warming up. Now I started to and it makes a helluva difference. I warm up with our clean vocalist and a lot of the stuff that pertains to screams also is active in cleans as well.
didnt know this guy was that awesome (at least he seems so in these videos), humble, honnest, generous, relevant, and moderate about the things he cant explain... made me want to reconsiderate some very common advices that are given in this video. Thanks for sharing !
I rotate my head slightly to the left as well as the tongue tot he roof of my mouth thing and its insane how much deeper I growl compared to be speaking voice.
i've come back to this just for some small tips here an there. i've become a lot better since i've started but at first i did damage my vocal chords and had the option to have surgery but i would have to quit. so i lived through the pain and just got better after. you, Eddie Hermida, Alex Koehler and Danny Worsnop started me off screaming. so thank you for changing my life man. peace
It really helped me personally to hear your tip about original vocals. I'm a drummer that does a few backing screams in my band, and I'm always criticizing myself for sounding too different from vocalists I listen to. I'm gonna work on solidifying my own sound as opposed to completely emulating other vocalists. Thanks a lot for the tip man.
He's such a goof lol it's so funny that he can scream like he can. I hate that people think those who are in Metal bands are all satanic, worthless, and emo losers.
+Telbun AKA Left Shark I know right? Many metal band members are down-to-earth and genuine people. Even Randy Blythe from Lamb of God wrote a book and helped write music for a ballet on Broadway. I actually didn't know there was this goofy side to Phil because of a couple interviews I've seen of this band. The world of Metal can be so misunderstood
In the end they're just people though haha. I've met quite a few bands from going to shows and most of them are really cool, and like you said down to Earth.
These are some really great tips especially for beginners. I love how he points out the importance of body position, because a lot of people just disregard that.
So nice that someone from a band that big makes a video like this. I mean I have seen a lot of amateur tutorials but there are not so many professional vids on TH-cam like this one. Thanks, man!
@@Sv4NNe I'm pretty sure Devin Townsend has a wider range, same for Spencer sotelo and many other people. Corey is a nice vocalist for what he does, but there are "better" vocalists out there.
I wanna add to this list, practice as much as possible. I'm not saying I have the vocals like Phil but I feel like I can do good vocals, but if you wanna be a good vocalist, practice as much as possible as you can. I did this and it really helped me a lot, along with a lot of water
Knowing your range is BY FAR the most important tip. When I first started learning I really tried to force my highs and ended up hurting my voice pretty badly. Your range will naturally improve over time with light and easy practice, your voice is actually similar to a muscle and it will get better. I still can't get the highs I want but my lows are fucking insane now lol.
I think this is awesome. I used to tell my friends "dude it'd be tight if Phil or any musician took the time to make a TH-cam channel and answer fan questions or show us their vocals."
Rockstar Punched, the red and black one, thats what i drink before vocals, the syrup thing is 100% true, it keeps you feeling moist for an hour or two,
it all depends on what you want to sound like. For raspy high screams I like to drink sugar water and/or sweet tea. But if you want more of a sorta scratchy muffled low sound, I've used like milk and peanut butter and it's great for that. :)
I used to do that too but then I realized that it only works for lows not highs and my friend would do that for highs but then we realized that he was using his throat and not his diaphragm
I heard warm water and honey works anyone else used this? I tried once and wow what a difference it made less scratchy throat feeling after singing. I usually can go 1-2 hours then I am toast. With the warm water and honey bam 3 hours no problem.
dude, this is amazing thank you, I just started singing screaming about a year ago using Melissa crosses technique, what I know of it LOL I need to pay and buy the whole thing, and it's incredible what I can do... Still have a lot to learn. these tips are good especially the warming up I can't do anything until I put my toolbox together

Dood, you are straight up one of the funniest guys and best vocalists I have ever had the pleasure of encountering. All of your tips from this vid and the 5 frontman tips were so helpful! Thanks man! Can't wait to see you in Detroit again.
I practiced just doing lows and now that's all I can do. I can do demonic lows, but I can't do highs. I try, but I just can't. New vocalists, practice both highs and lows! Both are very important in a band! I had to find another vocalist to do highs for me!
ULTRA GAMER I agree with you that everyone has his own vocal type , but you are not limited by your own voice , you can actually build up your vocalrange , for example I've been practesing high screams for 2 months now not constantly and I can say that my range increased very well , now it sounds much louder and higher and I think everyone can encrease their voice and range by practesing it takes time but it's possible , it's the only thing i disagree with this dude XD
The Firehawk practice black metal screams, make a kind of "Eh-Uh" sound that plays of quiz shows for a wrong answer, then say words like that, should come naturally then after warming up.
I fucking love you, Phil. You're one of my favorite screamers and for you to upload this is a dream come true to me because I just started out in vocals for a hardcore but I've never actually done all these steps you've shared in this video. This honestly means a lot to me. :)
Best vocalist ever. Also, this has helped me a lot. I aspire to be a vocalist in a band very similar to Whitechapel so this is very helpful. Thanks Phil. You're the best.
for the coating your throat tip, i find that flat, warm pepsi is REALLY good. it's super syrupy even when not flat and warm, and it just gets more so as time goes on, until it gets room temp. at that point its just magic.
I taught myself to do lows and high pitched at the same time so it gives this demonic mean ass sound :) That's what happens when you experiment! :D Thanks for the advice Phil :)
Yeah that's tunnel throat vocals. the main real goal of tunnel throat is to get a tunnel tone but through the same technique and implying another technique you can get that double toned scream and it's sick.

the one big problem with that is the water, cuz i drink alot (im doing growls and screams for closely six years now), and i almost pee all the time. my question is, how u control it on stage?
He just needs to drink a little before and maybe a little between the songs, you won't need that much water if your really good at it, it's most before you start, when I saw OM&M live, Austin just drank water 2 times and that was before and one after the first song, so you won't need so much when you've warmed it up =) PROv2lEagle
Make a song called "Piss on You" and piss into the crowd. They'll think it's part of the show. Hell, people at a gwar show get blood and nuts shot onto them, they won't mind a little piss XD
Vinny La Stella to echo what the others said, it's likely a matter of your breathing. Make sure you suck in some deep breaths and get used to keeping a puffed out chest and abdomen. One other thing is throat technique; make sure you're using your false or fry chords and not straining your actual vocal chords. Look that up if you don't know what I'm talking about.
It's really good that you talk about resting your voice when you've been overdoing vocals. I've found that I've been practicing like crazy the last couple months (with one or two days of rest each week) and that has led to my voice becoming sensitive to straining techniques and so on. So I'm definitely going to start making a schedule for each week so I'm not over doing my vocals.
