We will never know the outcome if ND had 11 guys in the last play. However, we do know that they gave up a 65 yard drive with only 1.25 on the clock. This includes conversions of 3rd and 10, 4th and 7, and 3rd and 19. And those were with 11 guys on the field.

It can’t be the pick because OSU dropped a much easier pick-6 on Hartman’s screen pass (last offensive possession). It was coaching. How do you take Estime out and call a screen pass in the first place? The numbers say run and make OSU use their last TO. Freeman went on 4th and 1 twice cause he said he’s a numbers guy. This game is on the coaches.

@@justinwebb4644 Coaches don’t play, sure. But when was the last time you saw such consistently egregious coaching undermining a supreme athletic effort in a top 10 game? Bench nations leading rusher in clutch moments of the game when he was piling up yards, screen pass, 3-man rush on 3rd and 19, 10 players on the field twice where players almost overcame bad coaching, i.e., phenomenal pass breakup by number 20 in the end zone and they almost stopped the touchdown run. Come on, this one is on the coaches.

First and foremost im a die hard Buckeye fan and have been my entire life. I was watching buckeye recap videos and this popped up during autoplay. I just wanted to say you guys are a breath of fresh air. Really good takes and just honest. I've always liked Notre Dame as a program and because most Notre Dame fans hate Michigan. Just wanted to say that was a very tough loss but a historically awesome game to watch. You guys will rebound and hopefully can win out to make the playoffs. I'm not blind, I realize my Buckeyes have a very long way to go if they want to compete in the playoffs, but if we both make it I'd love to see a rematch! Good luck next week versus duke!

I am really impressed with the long-term persistence of faithful Buckeye fans. I am a much older Notre Dame graduate of Generation X. I remember when Ohio State was in the "down" phase being dormant for years at a time. When I was at Notre Dame from 1987-1991, Ohio State was NEVER in national contention as I recall. They were just a middle-of-the-pack Big 10 team like Indiana or even Illinois. By contrast, the main Big 10 rivals for Notre Dame were Michigan and Michigan State. When ND beat the Wolverines in 1987 coached by the late Bo Schembechler, the game ended around 5:30 PM. So, many students went to the dining hall and had a massive food fight in celebration of the win. It was absurd because I witnessed it as a young Domer. The point is that Ohio State fans should be commended for staying faithful in between the "good years" when dormancy persisted for decades.
Now, I know Ohio State is back in prominence and expected this to be a tough game. As a realist, I was surprised it was close. My opinion is that Notre Dame football is ahead of schedule in "rebuilding". Notre Dame looks better this year than last year - but obviously there is room for improvement. I think the expectations would be higher 2 to 3 years from now. Right now, there can still be a good season.
As for Ohio State, the showdown with the Wolverines should be epic. If they survive that then they may have to play my other Alma Mater, Florida State, in the CFP. I got master's degrees at both FSU and UF, so I can usually count on one of them picking up where ND ends on the CFP hunt.

So refreshing to hear from a reasonable Buckeye fan.
I wrote that Ohio State was the better team Saturday night, and yet I still got shade from Buckeye fans.
Notre Dame fans can be arrogant at times also. It just seems like the majority of Ohio St. fans have zero respect for a team that took them down to basically the final play.
A great, hard-fought, instant classic of a game by two teams who very well could face each other again.
Hats off to Ohio State. One hell of a talented team.
If the Irish and Buckeyes played 10 times, you get the feeling they'd split 'em.

@@OldIrishFan1966 yah unfortunately Ohio States fan base is full of a large amount of ignorant assholes. They really give us all a bad reputation, but you will have that. We also have a vast majority of fans that will complain about not beating ND or any other team by 5 tds instead of just being happy to escape with a win. Unfair expectations almost every year tbh.
ND has a super difficult schedule this year so I'm thinking if you guys can pull off running the table you have a chance to make the playoffs. I know that not having a conference championship always hurts ND at the end of the year but this year seems pretty wide open. I honestly don't feel like there is one super elite team like Georgia was last year. So I'll be cheering you all on to win out!

I think it has not been discussed, but it seemed to me we should not have called timeout after the grounding. We had the momo and we gave OSU time to regroup AND then we came out of timeout in max coverage. I actually think if we had not called timeout Golden would have stayed with pressure. Possibly Marcus told him to be conservative during timeout. My point is it was the calling of the timeout that was the source of the problem.

The last 4 mins were a colossal failure by the coaching staff. Blitzing your best corner against their strong side leaving Ebuka wide open is and was a terrible call. Inside 4 minutes we also decided to try a pass coming off a FIVE yard sack with 2:40 left….run the dam ball. That’s clearly SITUATIONAL football experience and we caved. There’s was ZERO FKN excuse to run 3/4 straight pass plays after your DEFENSE just balled out and they need a TD to win….you take the fkn time outs away from that offense. At worst on 2&15 is you don’t get any yards (which to me we were running the ball so dam good it’s not unlikely we break off 7+ yard gain) they burn a timeout and then you make them burn the last one on 3rd.
Point is, they don’t get to call a time out to avoid a 10 sec run meaning the last play never happens.

Ohio State fans are no different than any other fan base. You have based, biased, bad, stoopid. The emotional waves that a fan goes through on a game like that is incredible, and measurable. Some fans regardless of situation, quality of opponent are very seldom going to appreciate the nuance of why plays work or dont work and just watching games once live with the emotion raw, and listening to tv broadcasters help to keep people ignorant of what is actually happening and why. Good game, both teams played alright. I really didnt see just awesome football from either team. It does appear ND is on an upward trajectory despite some curious calls by staff. But that doesnt mean OSU coached a great game either, they didnt. Both teams played with great effort. A lot of coaching still to do, and it is fun to watch teams grow through a season. We knew when we accepted Marcus Freeman as HC that there would be a learning curve for him. ND is his 1st HC job. The reason why he was brought in originally as DC was to help ND improve its recruiting. MF has done that. Our guys were able to go one-on-one for most of the game against OSU's 5 star players. OSU struggled against us.
Granted I agree that the last 4.5 minutes of the game were mismanaged by the ND coaches, but I see it as a learning curve issue for MF than as a "time to get a new HC." MF has shown that he can learn from his mistakes, but for the next year or so, I can see him getting outcoached by more experienced coaches, especially when playing against top competition. Last year, he was outcoached by Marshall's HC, who was an experienced HC. This year ND has won the games ND is supposed to. I feel that MF is taking ND to the next level, to being a Bonafide NC contender. It may take a bit longer than we hoped.

On that 62 yard run coming out of the half, why has no one noted that the reason that back was free and clear was because the receiver "blocking" for the runner (Harrison?) had his hands in the bottom of the facemask of our guy. Our guy was not "blocked"; watch the replay--fingers in the bottom of the facemask prevented our guy from breaking loose to even try to get to that runner who blew right by him. No flag, but it was not our defender's faulty.

Even with this 11th man it’s not a D tackle it’s someone in the back field. ND guessed wrong on the side they’d run to, because obviously you stopped OSU to the right and the throw the play before was to the right. So idk if the 11th man changes the game anyways. Plus you give them the penalty it’s lit a easy push Kyle McCord in. Defense guessed wrong side. That’s all it comes down to. Embuka the OSU WR droppped a easy TD so both teams made mistakes. You gotta give it to OSU they out manned ND.

He didn't say "OSU lost to....."

Also because OSU lost to Bama. Ok, ND lost their last 2 matchups to Bama.
Also because OSU lost to Mich. Ok, ND lost their last 7 of 11 to Mich.
Also because OSU lost Clemson. When, 2019? They beat them last time they played. Ok, ND had to wait for Trevor Lawrence to be out to win then lost 2/3 to them.

Go power I te overload. Go power I fullback dive…go Jalen hurts with Payne and have two meat heads no matter who they are do the Eagles push. Point is, Sam Hartman is a pretty boy. Nothing wrong with that. This is the best offensive line we’ve had in ten years and they were having they’re way…..we were to casual with our calls. We were not CAREFUL. Some *facts* that may seem like an opinion:
    - Since college players are making money now, it's fair game to roast them for playing horrible football. I get they're student athletes, but they're getting a $300k degree for free and make money on top of that. Sam Hartman, DJ Brown, Spencer Shrader, and Audric Estime all played worse they advertised in the first few weeks.
    - This team sucked last three seasons.. Adding Sam Hartman doesn't mean they're national championship contenders. The hype was far too heavy over the last three weeks, and I started to drink the koolaid myself. They were projected to lose 3.5 games this season. A last second loss to OSU, while as Notre Dame as it comes, is a GREAT loss. This team's ceiling is way higher than we thought but the floor needs to be realistic. USC loss is incoming, and it's totally ok.
    - Brian Kelly knew this team sucked and their 5 year schedule was DAUNTING, which is why he left in the middle of the night. Marcus Freeman is an incredible HC that not only represents ND well, but recruits better than anyone we've ever had. Give him time. This "but he's 13-5 so far" thing is dumb. Drew Pyne and Tyler Buchner never should've played football passed high school. They are absolute embarrassments. Seeing that Freeman won 9 games with those morons proves he's got potential. Give him time to get his own recruits into South Bend, along with an easier schedule and an expanded College Football Playoff.. Big losses like this suck, but it's not like us lifelong Irish fans aren't used to it. Big Game Brian and Turnover Tommy have continued our tradition down south!!
    - 10 men on the field will haunt Marcus for the rest of his career. As it should. No excuse, just don't lie about it at the presser.
    - Michigan sucks, Ohio State sucks, GO IRISH ☘

This is a great show. I graduated from Notre Dame in 1991. Then I returned for an online MS in Data Science at SMC in 2023. SMC was all-female when I was at ND but the graduate school started admitting males around 2015. So, I enrolled and graduated to study data science, machine learning, AI, etc. Go figure - a Zahmbie who graduated at SMC.
When I marched at SMC on May 20 with the young graduate students, I joked with them that when I was at Notre Dame we used to win championships. I was at the Fiesta Bowl in 1989 and stormed the field with the band since my roommate was in it. Back then Ohio State was a "middle-of-the-pack" Big 10 team and not very good. The Buckeyes were dormant for years. The main Big 10 rivals were Michigan and Michigan State. When ND beat Bo Schembechler's team of Wolverines my freshman year in 1987, many students celebrated with a drunken food fight at North Dining Hall - lol. It was like "Bluto's scene" on "Animal House".
Now, in modern times, I was rooting for ND with the new coach. I was really hoping ND would pull off the win but knew it would be tough. In today's competition, the quarterback (Hartman) seems kind of slow. He has a great arm and a lot of excellent statistical data with years of experience. But that attempt to run for the first down exposed his limits when he was cut off. It was also a mental mistake. The near delay-of-game that burned a timeout was also a gross error.
I was most appalled by the missing defender on the last two plays. As a very old Generation X guy who was at ND in the 1980s, I don't think even the infamous Gary Faust made a mistake like that. To be fair, Faust's main problem was the inability to defuse racial tension on the team in the context of the 1980s. But in terms of actual game play-calling, I don't recall him leaving ten men to stop a goal-line "scrum" as Mike noted. So, the coaching was really disappointing.
But I have since graduated and earned master's degrees from both FSU and UF. I lived in Tallahasee, FL for 13 years. So, I became an SEC fan and also am rooting for FSU this year. The Noles beat the "curse" of Clemson which to me sounds weird because as an old Generation X guy I remember when Clemson was known for choking in much of the 90s and 200s. As for ND, I honestly feel they are ahead of schedule in coming back. The 1986-1987 season was disappointing for ND and Coach Holtz with near misses in competitive games. Then in 1987 there were some great victories like against Michigan, Michigan State and en epic beatdown of Alabama at 37-6 when the Domers threw oranges on the field in the hopes of going to the Orange Bowl. But it was all letdown at the Cotton Bowl. A year later, Holtz and the team won the championship. For modern ND football of 2023, I think the next two to three years could have much better potential if they can continue to recruit positively.
I think Domers should recognize these highs-and-lows come in cycles. Ohio State was dormant for decades before finally winning another championship. When I was at ND, the Buckeyes were NEVER in the running for national contention. The main rival for the top 10 teams of the 1980s was the University of Miami with Vinny Testaverde, Michael Irvin, etc. It sounds hard to believe but that's how it was back then. For a good insightful book of the 1980s football scene, read "The Boz" by Brian Bosworth - one of the most outrageous and outspoken linebackers to have ever lived - lol.

Man, negative Nelly ND fans (which includes this Goolsby guy) kind of suck. In year TWO of Freeman's tenure this is the toughest ND team in 30 years. All those ND teams that made the playoffs got boat raced against the top teams. There's obviously a lot going on at that point in the game and you're talking about firing him! You all don't deserve Freeman and I hope he leaves that place so you can return to perpetual over-hyped mediocrity. There's a reason all the other victories were easy this season...you weren't playing anybody. The entitlement is ridiculous. You all act like you've had the recent success of Alabama or something, you haven't.

Post game i saw very little emotion from nd fans and very little from OSU fans(as opposed to Cincinnati fans who were going wild on the stadium ramps). ND fans expect to lose these games, OSU fans expect to win them.

Can't ever root for OSU over Michigan or vice versa. I'll just wish for a comet to hit the stadium.
