@@n3onvalkyrie936 You're right, you can't choreograph randomized outcomes in real time, but _after_ the outcomes are known, _then_ there's something to choreograph in retrospect. It's a benefit to their series' production style. They play (maybe a single round, maybe an entire session, don't know), and afterwards they act it out. If they were to play an entire session prior to acting (don't know if they do, but just musing "what if"), then it would be possible to choreograph the entire session's chaos, natural 1s and all :). Or so I'm imagining.
The most surprising thing I've learned from this series is that a lot of impressive practical stunts end up looking like CG in the final movie... which is a huge bummer.
I think it's because they're done in front of greenscreen and then to remove the green and 'stale' environment lighting of the studio and replace them with more realistic ambience and reflections they end up 'reskinning' them, which sometimes gives them a very clean, rubbery feel. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if they also mess with the tempo, at which point neither the original movement or lighting is represented completely accurately. It is indeed a shame but I suppose I can appreciate how little it takes to make something look fake. A little less polish would probably be a good look for a lot of Hollywood movies though.
Damn I feel like we got so much more insight and name drops on industry people in this episode! Love it! Edit: Also with all the interesting injuries in stunt work, and how they are kind of proud and wear them like a badge of honor. Would be fun to see you all recreate the Jaws bite scene with the stunt performers or just show the craziest stunt injuries and have the stunt performers talk about them and the scene in the movie/tv show.

well if anything what mythbusters did for getting stuck underwater for someone, it did for you. (basically mythbusters found out that if you get out early enough you can escape, but if you didn't panic and wait for the pressure to equalised your rate of survival is much higher (th-cam.com/video/2YaMEW30bv4/w-d-xo.html) )
Man,stuntman really put a lot effort in movies and their hardwork even goes unnoticed. They really deserve everyone's respect. They are an equal part for when a film gets created
All this talk of tricking reminded me of one of my favorite action films. It’s an obscure Korean action film called CITY OF VIOLENCE. It stars one of Korea’s most famous fight director Jung Doo Hong. He is credited as being the person who set the tone for Korea’s current modernized action style. What’s special about this film is that it’s the only film he ever starred in after always being behind the camera so he went all out and it’s a pure action film. I believe most if not all the stunts were done by himself but I’d love the stuntmen crew to pick it apart! I especially love this film because it’s like 80% constant kicking because the basis for the star’s specialty is Tae Kwon Do! On TH-cam there’s one specific fight scene uploaded called CITY OF VIOLENCE STREET FIGHT SCENE. Might be worth a watch!

it's an awesome film indeed. and Jung Doo Hong has an impressive filmography (watch his latest film if you haven't) my favourite scene in that film is the fight halfway through when the main protagonist is cornered by 4 different gangs referencing Walter hill's The Warriors.
I watched 2 fight scenes. The one you suggested and another that was titled "epic fight scene re sound" (they added their own punching and kicking sound effects) and holy crap I need to watch this movie! The clip u mentioned had beat it by mj playing. Idk if thats actually in the movie or if it was added, but it worked great for that scene lol. Thanks for sharing that. Now I just have to find where I can stream it
My takeaways: 1 - Gui is under-utilized, but always good to see him! 2 - Tony is another badass! 3 - Tony's mom is even more badass! 4 - I now appreciate G.I. Joe Retaliation, at least beyond the final cut

Watching Gui's face tells you when the hits are rough. It's like he's re-feeling the pain from prior stunts 🤣😬 Dwayne Johnson's response is gold. Perfect response. I almost expected him to say that Dwayne was there at 4am because that would also be on brand.
It really makes you realize that, though they may not be great technical martial artists, pro wrestlers are stunt performers in their own right. Every time someone got Rock Bottomed, they took that hit.

I mean, the way they move at times through those scenes does not look humanly possible, that it was practically done is wild. Also that a dude literally got his head sliced doing it, just nutty. I kinda wish they'd made the scene look a little less unreal, because that was a ton of intense stunt work I thought was just mediocre animation lol.
I remember Tron Legacy having a bit of tricking in it that takes center stage in some scenes. The actor who played Rinzler, Anis Cheurfa, put in the work to make some iconic shots during the disc battle.
Yep! I know that movie gets flak for being cheesy, but I thought the look of it was freakin' awesome, both the fights and the visual aesthetic? The guy who played Rinzler clearly had the most amazing movement control & awareness - reminded me a bit of how male gymnasts move?
Probably my favorite "Stuntment React" episode thus far: Gui is ALWAYS such a pleasure (fun, friendly, funny, super chill), and Travis was a wonderful new addition as well -friendly, insightful, introduced us all to a new and interesting form of stuntwork/choreography ("tricking")....just a great overall episode. Thanks again to everyone involved in the making of this fun and thoughtful episode :).
Travis was so funny and entertaining throughout the video, and he actually made me laugh out loud at one point. Definitely hope to see him again on the couch.
This episode showed how dangerous of a profession being a stunt person is, even the most trivial scenes that you barely pay any attention in the movie can cause serious injuries on the performers.
Makes me sad & kinda angry at the directors involved - stuntpeople aren't a disposable resource!! If your scene as planned is hurting people, then surely it's on you to stop now and rethink, not just barrel ahead...? Does make me wonder how much veto power the stunt coordinator had (or was using) in some of these instances... Injury can be a temporary loss of income or a permanent retirement from the industry, shouldn't be taken as an acceptable consequence even if the stunties do have a bit of a gung ho attitude about it?
Seriously, this is one of the best series about the ins and outs of the industry ive ever seen on youtube, about any department, in any era, these are always fun and informative. It's youtube gold. Oscar for stunts 2023 please, academy
I totally agree with you, I love hearing the perspective from two colleagues that actually worked together on the same or similar projects. It feels more personal and they gave more in-depth analyses of their experiences. I’m really feeling this format for “Stuntmen React”
The whole GI Joe thing is practical, yet it's the most CG looking thing I've ever seen (besides BlackPanther final fight in the tunnel thing). I'm sorry to everyone who's worked on this, especially Travis..
For real, I would have thought that whole sequence was maybe 95% cgi, with a couple of live action shots for close ups. Seems like a waste of good stuntmen, but I guess at least they got paid.

I am so curious how much of that trailer was (or will be) rendered live in the final product. I mean, surely not, but at the same time UE5 is capable of some insane things - and the combination of Disney and Quantic Dream would have the money to make the most of it.
Oh wow. I kind of feel bad for Travis. He's done a lot of fantastic stunt work, obviously, but so much of it has been for, not just kind of bland, but like notoriously terrible movies/franchises. Clearly dude deserves better.
That's the tragedy of so much behind-the-scenes work. Stunts, VFX, lighting, sound design, etc. All the technical stuff is being done by consumate pros who are excellent at their jobs, and it ends up in the service of third-rate fluff that's going to be forgotten a week later.
Honestly these past 3-4 years have put me out a bit of trying to pursue stunts. I know that not every production is the same but I've never heard of more accidents happening on big productions than in these couple of years. This is not meant to discourage anyone, it's just my thoughts

He’s a corporate director with more product placement than anyone else in hollywood in order to make that budget. He’s pretty reckless because the money allows him to be. Never been a fan of him personally.
I get the feeling that's the norm on a Michael Bay movie. Even the actors will admit everything's so crazy on-set. I saw an interview with a Ninja Turtles guy telling some horrid stories too.... Michael Bay sounds pretty bad to work for, overall. :P
When you guys talked about the injuries on the transformer film made me remember the nasty incident that happened on one of the later Resident Evil films, I believe the stuntwoman lost her arm. It would be good to have more of a talking head video from you guys on treatment of stuntmen & women, the unnecessary risks and some of the short comings from non-stunt people when making a film.
if every take of a scene is sending a stuntperson to the hospital then that scene really needs to change. the director being brave enough to be close to the action doesn't justify it, I'm not willing to see someone get a permanent injury for me to watch a mildly entertaining movie one afternoon.
I love how stuntmen and stuntwomen's backgrounds can be so varied. From dancing, martial arts, acting, mocap, acrobatics, sports, rodeo cowboy, amateur fight choreography TH-cam channel, etc... However they started, you end up with extremely passionate people that also happen to be monsters of athleticism.
Their last point of Surf Ninjas, man, that movie is legendary. Missed so many people's marks but I grew up with my best friend shouting "Qwansu!" at each other whenever we encountered a menial task to hype each other up. So great.
I wish the Academy would award stuntwork. They have no problem putting on a showreel at the Oscars featuring all sorts of action scenes to playback all the fun entertainment the audiences enjoyed over the year and then promptly dismiss the people who made that happen when it's time to give awards.
The Academy already said that they dont do that because the stuntmans would do more dangerous and risky stunts just to try to win the award, wich would Be life threating.

The stunt branch of the academy should create a shortlist like in the other more technical categories, where they can bring their expertise in who was running a professional team taking appropriate risks and consider that. Then the full Academy can vote from that point on the final nominees/winners.

Yeah. And all too often it makes everything about the stunts look fake. Another sad example is the terrible Assassin's Creed movie. They had an absolutely top-tier stunt crew, did almost everything live, even did the longest freefall ever on film - and it all looks like absolute garbage onscreen because it's surrounded by terrible CGI.
Thank you for bringing these talented stunt performers on here. I never knew how much they sacrificed their bodies so we can experience the magic on screen. 🙌
It's so funny now because now I cannot unsee Gui as falcon's stuntman as well as henchmenhman in the same sequence in civil War and winter soldier and black panther. He does great work.
For Travis Wong's suggestion, ya'll should check out Raging Phoenix (2009) out of Thailand that features dance fighting that they invented specifically for the film called Meyraiyuth. It combines dance techniques similar to B-Boys and mixes it with Muay Thai. It also combines a little Drunken Boxing and Capoeira. Definitely worth mentioning as it is very similar to The Kick from this episode.

Just pure admiration for this show giving stunt people much deserved love. Doing all the heavy lifting in those action movies, which collect all the doe in the cinemas they don't get enough praise. Please bring more talent. I want to know their work and names.
Not a professional but I would hazard to say that the frame rate and camera placement don't do it any favors. It looks like it was filmed at a high frame rate and then sped up and slowed down in certain segments, making it look less filmic and very artificial, especially in the sequence where they connect to the zip line off of the jump.
I never thought about it but It makes perfect sense that a wrestler would be great at on set stunts. Also, a great addition to the next Fast and Furious series would be Stone Cold Steve Austin 🥶
In the next episode of "stuntmen react" you should take a look at the amazing stunts of late Jean Paul Belmondo in favour of his memory. He was quite famous for being one of the first, if not the first actor to perform almost all of his stunts and many of them are really impressive (almost to the point of being ridiculous by today's standards), so I really wish you would react to some of them. Especially since not that many people seem to be aware of his work nowadays outside of France.
This was my favorite stuntman episode so far! I really liked getting that behind the scenes and in-depth look at how they did some of these specific stunt sequences. I hope to see more stuff like this in the future. I'm nowhere near being in the film industry, I'm a primary school teacher, but this channel has inspired me to start playing around in Blender and Unreal for fun and I have a much greater appreciation for what goes into movies and VFX and I've shared some of that with my students. I hope you guys continue to inspire :)
Y'all should look at M:I 2, especially when Ton Cruise storms a compound near the end. There's a shot when the guy he's fighting just freezes while Cruise responds to something on his headset then gets punched. Lots of "guy gets punched and is stunned but standing still and upright for second hit" stuff
I also recently watched “The Fable” and was impressed at the practical applications of different styles of fighting. What other film gems are out there?
Travis has great energy, I really enjoyed listening to him! His banter with Gui was a lot of fun too, and I loved all the shoutouts to the other stuntmen. You can tell that they really respect their peers.
This channel has wonderfully spoiled my love of action, in that I am bothered by watching poorly done scenes where the editing is the focus instead of the brilliant work done by these actors. Many thanks to Corridor for expanding my perception of the art form.
I mean there are people literally ready to give there lives for seconds of realism on your screen. The story might not be perfect, the acting might not be perfect, the direction might not be perfect but still these are people who love what they do and they want to make us feel entertained even if it is for a second. So yeah... Respect the art.
Fun times I happened to be a lucky contractor getting sent the movie transformers rig for a promotional game and that was a real crazy learning experience. movies riggers are insane, the amount of technical work on these are just over the top
I love Travis for working on Sleeping Dogs. This game is a masterpiece and the fighting and stunts are just out of this world. Looking at those side by side shots I think it was practical and then touched up. People swing a little bit more wildly and such.

tricking is actually way more than stunt work. it's a whole sport with its own culture
dude pretty had alot of inside-info about the filming ( action scenes, stunt, etc ) - as he is litterly in most action movies today : )

This episode showed how dangerous of a profession being a stunt person is, even the most trivial scenes that you barely pay any attention in the movie can cause serious injuries on the performers.
Some even lose their lives
Makes me sad & kinda angry at the directors involved - stuntpeople aren't a disposable resource!! If your scene as planned is hurting people, then surely it's on you to stop now and rethink, not just barrel ahead...? Does make me wonder how much veto power the stunt coordinator had (or was using) in some of these instances... Injury can be a temporary loss of income or a permanent retirement from the industry, shouldn't be taken as an acceptable consequence even if the stunties do have a bit of a gung ho attitude about it?
Seriously, this is one of the best series about the ins and outs of the industry ive ever seen on youtube,
about any department, in any era, these are always fun and informative. It's youtube gold.

I totally agree with you, I love hearing the perspective from two colleagues that actually worked together on the same or similar projects. It feels more personal and they gave more in-depth analyses of their experiences. I’m really feeling this format for “Stuntmen React”
Gui should be on every stuntmen reacts. Travis was cool. Definitely bring him back. And don't forget about Aaron Toney.
The whole GI Joe thing is practical, yet it's the most CG looking thing I've ever seen (besides BlackPanther final fight in the tunnel thing). I'm sorry to everyone who's worked on this, especially Travis..
I know.. I totally thought that whenever there are rappeling scenes that even the ninjas were cgi. Apparently it was real people in green screen.
My thoughts exactly. I was floored to see they weren't CG.
For real, I would have thought that whole sequence was maybe 95% cgi, with a couple of live action shots for close ups. Seems like a waste of good stuntmen, but I guess at least they got paid.
I'm pretty sure that scene uses plenty of digital doubles.

So cool to see Travis on the show. When I was a kid I never saw anyone that looked remotely like me in or working on movies, so it's really cool to see him on the show :D. I hope it inspires someone to pursue what they're dreaming of

Oh wow. I kind of feel bad for Travis. He's done a lot of fantastic stunt work, obviously, but so much of it has been for, not just kind of bland, but like notoriously terrible movies/franchises. Clearly dude deserves better.
That's the tragedy of so much behind-the-scenes work. Stunts, VFX, lighting, sound design, etc. All the technical stuff is being done by consumate pros who are excellent at their jobs, and it ends up in the service of third-rate fluff that's going to be forgotten a week later.

As someone interested in pursuing that industry, Travis' Transformer's story is pretty horrifying as far as industry standard practices go.
Honestly these past 3-4 years have put me out a bit of trying to pursue stunts. I know that not every production is the same but I've never heard of more accidents happening on big productions than in these couple of years. This is not meant to discourage anyone, it's just my thoughts
There's not really an excuse for endangering stunt performers now that we can remove wires and pads using CGI.
It makes me hate Michael Bay even that much more.
@@thomasbecker9676 Well yes and no one pinches pennies more than Bay’s studios and producers. He’s a corporate director with more product placement than anyone else in hollywood in order to make that budget. He’s pretty reckless because the money allows him to be. Never been a fan of him personally.
I get the feeling that's the norm on a Michael Bay movie. Even the actors will admit everything's so crazy on-set.
I saw an interview with a Ninja Turtles guy telling some horrid stories too.... Michael Bay sounds pretty bad to work for, overall. :P
When you guys talked about the injuries on the transformer film made me remember the nasty incident that happened on one of the later Resident Evil films, I believe the stuntwoman lost her arm. It would be good to have more of a talking head video from you guys on treatment of stuntmen & women, the unnecessary risks and some of the short comings from non-stunt people when making a film.
Heck for Transformers Dark of the Moon one of the stunts went wrong and an extra got a horrible brain injury.
Her injuries were absolutely horrendous, such a tragic and avoidable incident.
if every take of a scene is sending a stuntperson to the hospital then that scene really needs to change. the director being brave enough to be close to the action doesn't justify it, I'm not willing to see someone get a permanent injury for me to watch a mildly entertaining movie one afternoon.

Fantastic episode, love the chemistry of all 3 on the couch. Gui is always a treat.
I love how stuntmen and stuntwomen's backgrounds can be so varied. From dancing, martial arts, acting, mocap, acrobatics, sports, rodeo cowboy, amateur fight choreography TH-cam channel, etc... However they started, you end up with extremely passionate people that also happen to be monsters of athleticism.
We absolutely need to keep Gui on as a host! He's a delight.

Their last point of Surf Ninjas, man, that movie is legendary. Missed so many people's marks but I grew up with my best friend shouting "Qwansu!" at each other whenever we encountered a menial task to hype each other up. So great.
I wish the Academy would award stuntwork. They have no problem putting on a showreel at the Oscars featuring all sorts of action scenes to playback all the fun entertainment the audiences enjoyed over the year and then promptly dismiss the people who made that happen when it's time to give awards.

The Academy already said that they dont do that because the stuntmans would do more dangerous and risky stunts just to try to win the award, wich would Be life threating.

The stunt branch of the academy should create a shortlist like in the other more technical categories, where they can bring their expertise in who was running a professional team taking appropriate risks and consider that. Then the full Academy can vote from that point on the final nominees/winners.

It’s funny when shots that look not physically possible are actually filmed on set practically with stunt performers but it still looks like it was done with CGI when you’re watching it on the screen.
Yeah. And all too often it makes everything about the stunts look fake. Another sad example is the terrible Assassin's Creed movie. They had an absolutely top-tier stunt crew, did almost everything live, even did the longest freefall ever on film - and it all looks like absolute garbage onscreen because it's surrounded by terrible CGI.

It's so funny now because now I cannot unsee Gui as falcon's stuntman as well as henchmenhman in the same sequence in civil War and winter soldier and black panther. He does great work.
I think Aaron Tony is the falcon's stunt double, but gui is definitely black Panthers stunt double
For Travis Wong's suggestion, ya'll should check out Raging Phoenix (2009) out of Thailand that features dance fighting that they invented specifically for the film called Meyraiyuth. It combines dance techniques similar to B-Boys and mixes it with Muay Thai. It also combines a little Drunken Boxing and Capoeira. Definitely worth mentioning as it is very similar to The Kick from this episode.

Not a professional but I would hazard to say that the frame rate and camera placement don't do it any favors.
It looks like it was filmed at a high frame rate and then sped up and slowed down in certain segments, making it look less filmic and very artificial, especially in the sequence where they connect to the zip line off of the jump.
Damn, I love Travis Wong's energy, hell of a nice dude! Props to him and momma Wong raising a humble man! :D

In the next episode of "stuntmen react" you should take a look at the amazing stunts of late Jean Paul Belmondo in favour of his memory.
He was quite famous for being one of the first, if not the first actor to perform almost all of his stunts and many of them are really impressive (almost to the point of being ridiculous by today's standards), so I really wish you would react to some of them. Especially since not that many people seem to be aware of his work nowadays outside of France.

This was my favorite stuntman episode so far! I really liked getting that behind the scenes and in-depth look at how they did some of these specific stunt sequences. I hope to see more stuff like this in the future. I'm nowhere near being in the film industry, I'm a primary school teacher, but this channel has inspired me to start playing around in Blender and Unreal for fun and I have a much greater appreciation for what goes into movies and VFX and I've shared some of that with my students. I hope you guys continue to inspire :)
Y'all should look at M:I 2, especially when Ton Cruise storms a compound near the end. There's a shot when the guy he's fighting just freezes while Cruise responds to something on his headset then gets punched. Lots of "guy gets punched and is stunned but standing still and upright for second hit" stuff

Ame Agaru. If you like Kurosawa and Japanese martial arts there are some amazing scenes in it. Also it's a wonderful film.

Travis has great energy, I really enjoyed listening to him! His banter with Gui was a lot of fun too, and I loved all the shoutouts to the other stuntmen. You can tell that they really respect their peers.
This channel has wonderfully spoiled my love of action, in that I am bothered by watching poorly done scenes where the editing is the focus instead of the brilliant work done by these actors. Many thanks to Corridor for expanding my perception of the art form.

I mean there are people literally ready to give there lives for seconds of realism on your screen. The story might not be perfect, the acting might not be perfect, the direction might not be perfect but still these are people who love what they do and they want to make us feel entertained even if it is for a second. Fun times I happened to be a lucky contractor getting sent the movie transformers rig for a promotional game and that was a real crazy learning experience. movies riggers are insane, the amount of technical work on these are just over the top
I love Travis for working on Sleeping Dogs. This game is a masterpiece and the fighting and stunts are just out of this world. If any of you reading this havent picked it up yet, it sometimes drops below 3$ and it's worth so much more trust me on this one. Edit: We need clips of Shaolin Soccer in the next Episode 😂
