fun fact: in Chinese Mandarin, crocodile is "鳄" while alligator is "短吻鳄" which literally translates to "short snout croc". i know this video kinda debunks the whole "broad snout be alligator" thing. but still, it's way more intuitive to tell the difference between the two if you know a bit of Chinese.
Chinese is probably the worst language to look at for telling species apart. The official name of alligators and crocodiles in Chinese are both 鳄鱼... lots of words in Chinese are broad and generic. 差不多 culture right down to the language

@@v0ism It's not about size and strength. Both Alligators and Crocs are physically quite capable of killing humans. But temperamentally, Crocs are proven to be far more aggressive than Gators. The American gator in particular is very docile and is highly unlikely to attack a human unless provoked.

Alligators split from caimans around 60-70 million years ago but still share a lot of features (aside from the tooth pattern and lack of body ISOs mentioned in the video, the whole family lacks salt glands on the tongue, which is a characteristic of the crocodiles). Crocodiles and alligators split around 95-100 million years ago.

Yes, that's pretty much why I did that. Caimans are still within the family alligatoridae, so scientifically they are 'alligators', but as the general public relies on common names and they're not normally called 'alligators' I covered both possibilities.

This is without question the best educational video I’ve seen about crocodilians! And for sure the best video on how to tell the difference between alligators and crocodiles or alligatoridae from crocodylidae. I was quite surprised about the differences in ISOs in crocodylids and alligatorids that was something new to me that I never knew before and was very cool to learn about. Also it was awesome seeing your artwork in “Systematic revision of the living African Slender-snouted Crocodiles (Mecistops Gray 1844)” where your artwork depicts the differences between M. Cataphractus and M. Leptorhynchus in morphology and the photographs of the slender snouted crocs themselves as added references between the two species. I believe back in 2007 there were only 23 crocodilian species recognized, as of now we have 28 crocodilian species recognized currently, and more to be discovered. For the new species we currently have the Congo dwarf crocodile osteolaemus osborni, west African dwarf crocodile osteolaemus frontatus, West african crocodile crocodylus suchus, Central African slender snouted crocodile mecistops leptorhynchus, and Hall’s New Guinea crocodile crocodylus halli. And eventually other cryptic species will most likely be officially recognized as distinct species like the Borneo crocodile crocodylus raninus, and the brown caiman, caiman fuscus, and maybe certain populations of American crocodiles. But there is also the possibility that there are species of crocodilians thought to be extinct that may still survive in remote localities like the small fully terrestrial and arboreal dwarf mekosuchine crocodiles like mekosuchus In New Guinea or in small unexplored islands around New Guinea. And maybe perhaps the Madagascan horned crocodile voay robustus could possibly to since Evon hekkala’s research has show that there were two crocodile species recognized by explores in Madagascar up until the 1860s. Even species new to science that are not part of a cryptic species complex or thought to be extinct crocs could be found. In lake tele in the Congo, locals claim that a fourth species of croc resides in the south of the reserve, I remember reading this and other websites claiming four species of crocodile live in lake tele. Very intriguing, and in Angola locals claim that large crocodiles living in the region occasionally preys on livestock. As far as I’m aware, Nile crocodiles are only found at the boarder of Angola while these croc reports are in inland river systems, and are described as very wide and eyes very close together. So it’s possible that it is a new species of crocodile closely related to osteolaemus or a distinct population of Nile crocodiles. And reports Of crocs from Liberia That are described as being distinct from the known croc species in the region. Hopefully more species will be found and protected in the future.

Both alligators and crocodiles are alive today, so one isn't an 'evolved' version of the other. They had a common ancestor around 90 million years ago. Alligators aren't smaller than crocodiles as a general rule. There are large and small members of both the alligator and crocodile family. Although the largest crocodile is larger than the largest alligator, that does not mean all crocodiles are larger than all alligators. Alligators are not more 'apex' nor more 'deadly' than crocodiles. Most of the animals responsible for killing and eating humans have been crocodiles.
That is exactly why I don't like the snout rule. There is just too much diversity in snout shape with crocodylians and like you said as the animal ages. Great video dude, everyone needs to see this.

South Florida is the only place in the world where American alligators and crocodiles live together and we can quickly tell the difference by their skin color. Alligators tend to be black and crocodiles tend to be greenish/gray. Alligators also prefer freshwater while crocodiles prefer saltwater. Great video.

@@v0ism It's not about size and strength. Both Alligators and Crocs are physically quite capable of killing humans. But temperamentally, Crocs are proven to be far more aggressive than Gators. The American gator in particular is very docile and is highly unlikely to attack a human unless provoked.

Alligators and caimans form a monophyletic group, the family alligatoridae. Alligators split from caimans around 60-70 million years ago but still share a lot of features (aside from the tooth pattern and lack of body ISOs mentioned in the video, the whole family lacks salt glands on the tongue, which is a characteristic of the crocodiles).
Crocodiles and alligators split around 95-100 million years ago.

Yes, that's pretty much why I did that. Caimans are still within the family alligatoridae, so scientifically they are 'alligators', but as the general public relies on common names and they're not normally called 'alligators' I covered both possibilities.
I just always looked at it this way. Alligators seem to have lips, while for crocodiles their teeth almost seem to be their lips

I was quite surprised about the differences in ISOs in crocodylids and alligatorids that was something new to me that I never knew before and was very cool to learn about. Also it was awesome seeing your artwork in “Systematic revision of the living African Slender-snouted Crocodiles (Mecistops Gray 1844)” where your artwork depicts the differences between M. Cataphractus and M. Leptorhynchus in morphology and the photographs of the slender snouted crocs themselves as added references between the two species. I believe back in 2007 there were only 23 crocodilian species recognized, as of now we have 28 crocodilian species recognized currently, and more to be discovered. For the new species we currently have the Congo dwarf crocodile osteolaemus osborni, west African dwarf crocodile osteolaemus frontatus, West african crocodile crocodylus suchus, Central African slender snouted crocodile mecistops leptorhynchus, and Hall’s New Guinea crocodile crocodylus halli. And eventually other cryptic species will most likely be officially recognized as distinct species like the Borneo crocodile crocodylus raninus, and the brown caiman, caiman fuscus, and maybe certain populations of American crocodiles. But there is also the possibility that there are species of crocodilians thought to be extinct that may still survive in remote localities like the small fully terrestrial and arboreal dwarf mekosuchine crocodiles like mekosuchus In New Guinea or in small unexplored islands around New Guinea. And maybe perhaps the Madagascan horned crocodile voay robustus could possibly to since Evon hekkala’s research has show that there were two crocodile species recognized by explores in Madagascar up until the 1860s. In lake tele in the Congo, locals claim that a fourth species of croc resides in the south of the reserve, I remember reading this and other websites claiming four species of crocodile live in lake tele. As far as I’m aware, Nile crocodiles are only found at the boarder of Angola while these croc reports are in inland river systems, and are described as very wide and eyes very close together. So it’s possible that it is a new species of crocodile closely related to osteolaemus or a distinct population of Nile crocodiles. And reports Of crocs from Liberia That are described as being distinct from the known croc species in the region. Hopefully more species will be found and protected in the future.

That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.

This video really struggled to get past 100 views as it wasn't showing up on TH-cam searches (it possibly still isn't - I haven't checked in a while), but at the moment one of my other videos is getting a bit of attention so this one is enjoying a bit of a trickle-down effect and the views are _slowly_ increasing. I put way more effort into this one. I was actually pretty close to not producing any more videos for TH-cam.

I actually trained my goldfish to associate being fed with the sound of me shaking the food container out of sight and they now go to the surface begging for food when they hear the sound. Alligators are evolved crocodiles but smaller. However pound for pound alligators are much more apex and deadly
Both alligators and crocodiles are alive today, so one isn't an 'evolved' version of the other. They had a common ancestor around 90 million years ago.
Alligators aren't smaller than crocodiles as a general rule. There are large and small members of both the alligator and crocodile family. Although the largest crocodile is larger than the largest alligator, that does not mean all crocodiles are larger than all alligators.
Alligators are not more 'apex' nor more 'deadly' than crocodiles. Most of the animals responsible for killing and eating humans have been crocodiles.

Many caimans are rather feisty, don't even get me started on crocodiles.
That is exactly why I don't like the snout rule. There is just too much diversity in snout shape with crocodylians and like you said as the animal ages. Great video dude, everyone needs to see this.

That is the 1998 one. And that one has been debunked, no longer considered as Godzilla as it was killed by twelve missiles. The actual Godzilla is strong enough to not receive any damage from attacks of any missile fire, and is pretty much indestructible. He can also breathe an atomic breath from his mouth like how a dragon breathes fire from its mouth. I’m talking about the 2014 Godzilla, which is also the 2019 Godzilla (sequel).

Same thing in Arabic , alligators and crocodile are the same thing “Temsah”
South Florida is the only place in the world where American alligators and crocodiles live together and we can quickly tell the difference by their skin color. Alligators tend to be black and crocodiles tend to be greenish/gray. Alligators also prefer freshwater while crocodiles prefer saltwater. Great video.
