Sony was considered the worst offender during the TH-cam bot purge. Something like 30%+ of the views of Sony artists' music videos were from bots. Using bots to trick the algorithm into thinking their artists were more popular than they were while also tricking people into thinking artists were more popular than they are is more business than art.

Artistically?? where are the hits? where are the songs which stay in the consciousness of society?. Back in the days, they choose the artist due to their artistic skills in music, bc the industry HAD to invest in those people. Today they lean back with their cigars and waiting till influencers have enough audience so the industry doesn't need to invest in these peoples anymore...but the thing is: those influencers gaining their audiences not through the "art" of music but bc they being silly, with music content around it. So Rob plz don't talk about art. You kill art by choosing the lazy way to make money with music
All the big players are mystified by TH-cam, except probably Apple, who has been at the front of every digital business model shift in music. Give it ten years I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple Music and TH-cam are dominant, and maybe Amazon creeps in. These are the three that seem to care a little about the art, and artists, and all have massive finance machines unrelated to music. Sony as he describes is something in the category as a business model, but doesn’t have a streaming play outside of whatever it owns as stock in these platforms, TBD.
Watching this video made me sick. The derogatory way he greeted, spoke, and explained his business is the perfect example of how the company views musicians and artists. The music business is dead due to the existence of these types of merchants, manipulators and exploiters of the industry. He says "A 14-year old in a bedroom somewhere who's about to make amazing music using the tools of AI, but we have to get the business model sorted out first" and then right after says "We're waiting for the artists to experiment and then we'll follow the artist", so what is it? The art first, or the business?
it’s more efficient to learn how to play an instrument at a younger age because your brain is still developing during those years, therefore whatever you learn “sticks with you longer”. Learn art as a child and learn business as an adult and then … blend the two together later on in life.
@@mccarthysam So you’re confused by their approach? Professional music groups and record labels generally all have the same business model. They all generate money via Events, Music Retail, Merch, Sync, and Business Endorsements. The details and the fine tuning might come after discovering “the art” “the talent” aka “finding the right group for the label” but the main sources of revenue are already in place.

Quite sickening to watch a platform being given to evil corporate behavior to justify their actions...justify themselves with platitudes, smooth talk and lies. You work for an evil corporation, you partake in evil, JUST OWN IT.
It’s in the opening question: “how does he see record industry growth” - this isn’t about artists, it’s only about the bottom line for the executives no matter how you spin it. The new industry has made certain new artists are shut out, shut down and fail to see revenue from their work. The record industry lost money when it failed to see the future of online music, continuing to back on physical cds. In order to recover, they got in bed with the streaming industry, which is nothing short of piracy, but the industry has protected its losses by siding up with streaming, leaving the artists in the dust. Sony is one of the worst thieves in the industry, why any self-respecting journalist would give them more airtime in the name of music is beyond me. Art never comes first in the industry. Celebrity driven business indeed. 🤮
Summary: ‘Yes, we’ll always find a way to rip off artists from the money they deserve and make sure it ends up in our pockets’. 3:21 ‘Bow-teek’ Who the flying fork says ‘bow-teek’.
Hence why many musicians need to stay AWAY from the music *business.* Why would you get into business with minimal understanding of how these businesses run? If you were business savvy, you wouldn’t need these labels anyway.
Streaming has killed both music and movies. I am glad more people are hearing my music than before, but the small amount I get is ridiculous! How come I get get a subscription to McDonalds where I pay 10 bucks a month and eat everyday whatever I want and as much as I want. Why is music and movies using this model? No one else does?
LOL 🤣 The music business CORPS, is controlled like everthing else as those who owns the music corps are those who really controls it all and setting THE SHOTS for how things should be run, no matter CEO ROB SINGER and other so called CEO's of what ever corps they seemingly leading. Artists interest are NOT the nprimary an interest for the music business corps. And music business are blend and merged with movie & entertainment industry owned and controlled by those same on the top (NOT THOSE CEO's ) that calling the shots and all of the shady stuff within music / movie and entertainment industry (did I hear PUFF DADDY etc ) is NOW fully coming to light related to all the shady shadow stuff that has been going on...just like all the crappy shady stuff that is going on with SPOTIFY and other things aswell...which are all owned by those same at the very top.
The music industry is the middle of a financial crisis … it’s counterproductive to ask labels to front the cost of touring and music production for bands when rappers/pop artists just need a microphone and playback that syncs to an elaborate light show. Bands need to keep gear and band members to the minimum to make touring profitable. Bands also need to livestream TO venues FROM their rehearsal spaces to kickstart funds for their LIVE in-person tours instead of needing labels to gamble on fronting the cost for them to tour.
David Bowie predicted the concept of 'streaming' music. However, it is a terrible business model. Spotify pays music artists peanuts - that is well known. However, the amount of money the company makes (net profit not revenue) when compared with the big behemoths of the music industry pre-Napster is not very much.
I get the feeling AI has done a really good job at aping music from the past 20 years with artificial beats, autotuned singers and written from an algorithm, but do people care about it? Some people just accept that because they don’t really care about music like they don’t care about natural food, but I see a bunch of kids who are listening to their parents record collections because there hasn’t been an artist that has captured the zeitgeist like it did with Elvis, the Beatles, Bowie or Madonna did. And that’s why the record companies are buying up catalogues of classic artists and ignoring modern disposable acts.
They haven’t had the artists and consumers on their backside for long enough? The entirety of the business model. Art…what art? Yeah, there’s a bit but it’s so diluted. Consumers don’t even know the art in broad sense anymore. Only commerce. Poor Napster debacle wasn’t its downfall-it was the company response. Artist having power; maybe a few. He is the cigar smoking fat cat. I just don’t buy this wolf in sheep’s clothing. His body language gives him away.

Just to clarify; Michael owned half of Sony as well as the rights to his own catalogue. It probably was up for sale which is why Sony bought it, but Michael was in full control of his music at the time of his death
Also most labels today would not take three albums to break an artist. Granted Harry was also known for being in One Direction, but Sony could have dropped or shelved him after the first album but they didn't and we got Sign of The Times and Watermelon Sugar
Look at the state of Stringer .. he looks absolutely haunted. No amount of money is worth it if you end up like that.
Good panel.
Great interview 🫡🎲
What the fuck.
Wow Sony talking about MJ is like killing him twice. Can't eat that much how i wanna puke hearing that
If you hear Rob talking about the music industry and especially art is like, its all cool, isn't it??? ...the industry was struggling in the 80s and 90s...and today its cool...indeed they making more money than ever before...but ONLY on the economical standpoint.
A mj fan who is a fucking moron surprise surprise
Diy is the way ,music for fun not money
Record companies made s*** tons of money, artists got screwed, and he has the balls to get up there and say he's concerned about art, such c***
Spotify as good as a product it is - it certainly does not come close to all the listenable content out there. I am surprised that YT did not come up.
This man's attitude confirms that the music business is pure MAFIA... what a disgusting and despotic attitude...
agreed 100%
He's wrong btw, that shtty music wont catch anyone in the English world. This is the horrible things this greedy pigs do, they convince themself about something wrong and with all their money and power push it hard on the public, infecting our ears with crpp, wasting everyone's time and other people's creativity time.
These people are all so brave and arrogant due to their money and status, that's it. Without it, there are losers. That is how I view them, and why I don't take them serious.
Fallin fallin is BABYLON THE GREAT !
She who rides the beast

He says "A 14-year old in a bedroom somewhere who's about to make amazing music using the tools of AI, but we have to get the business model sorted out first" and then right after says "We're waiting for the artists to experiment and then we'll follow the artist", so what is it? The art first, or the business?
it’s more efficient to learn how to play an instrument at a younger age because your brain is still developing during those years, therefore whatever you learn “sticks with you longer”. Learn art as a child and learn business as an adult and then … blend the two together later on in life.
@@partymarty6969 That makes sense and I agree, but I think he's referring to his/their approach as a record label.
I understand that, what I meant is that he was leading with “we care about the art first, business second” to an almost suspicious degree,, and the part about “needing to sort the business model first” to me came off as a slip of the tongue.
@@mccarthysam He is the Chairman of a major music company. They are just as corrupt as politicians. Why are you surprised by their words? Of course there is a suspicious undertone LOL!
And most labels today would not take three albums to break an artist. Granted, he was already known from One Direction but they could have dropped or shelved him and they didn't, and now we have Sign of The Times and Watermelon Sugar
I tuned out after 3 minutes. Going to listen to something else that is actually useful.
great discussion! the exec came and delivered, great insight! 👏
Be the change you want to see in the world. That's exactly why I started making music-tired of all the noise and negativity. Time to bring something real.
It's great that you want to create art, but this everyone is fake but me mindset is why everyone hates musicians
@@neutraltoxic Where did you get “everyone is fake but me” from this thread or in this video? Your negative blanket statement is the problem here.
Meanwhile I’m booking popular music groups to livestream FROM their rehearsal space TO screen at a venue in my city in real-time. This paves a path forward for musicians to get back to creating/performing the music so they can sell concert tickets OFF the road in between touring LIVE in-person (I also perform LIVE in-person at these events, I am the event organizer & the opening act).
Check out COSM in LA to peep The Sports Industry’s take on this concept.
@@neutraltoxic Where did the person you're replying to here say *anything close to* "Everyone is fake but me"? That was a serious misreading of the comment, and not fair at all. Also, it's not true, at all, that "everyone hates musicians." I'm not a musician, but I have known many, and I never hated any of them.
@@christianman73 by the name of your account I reckon you believe in some nonsensical crpp and therefore you cant read good.
@@radidov5333 Actually, I can read quite well. I majored in English (grammar and literature) and minored in philosophy and religion at university. I did believe in nonsensical crap, as an atheist, for several years, but thankfully, that was temporary.
Executive double speak.
yeah. automated taste. Wir sind die Roboter.
This guy is a real art collector !!
He pronounced Basquiat 'bass-quit'
no he's not u baboon..hes a thief
This guy looks & sounds like he should be controlling over 30% of all artists we hear
And as an independent unsigned artist with some success on Tiktok you are up against a wall with Spotify and playlist curators who monoploize taste. Even if you do a campaign and submit ahead of a release there's still no guarantee that your song will be considered for a playlist
Yep. Same here. It's next to impossible, and if you do get on, it's not all that. Those listeners are passive, and they eventually take you off.
Music will always be nothing more than a product/commodity to people like this guy. He knows nothing of what it's like to be an artist or creator. He's a businessman. Make no mistake.
this would have been more constructive as a round table with opposing sides. obviously this guy will perceive the value of his assets to be higher than the market rate but with noone to challenge the other side this is really just proselytizing.
❤
how about that... an executive I enjoyed listening to. Just please remove your hand from your face. He did get better/more comfortable as the interview went further. To expose listeners to new music, straming services need a Monty Python button called: And now for something completely different.
Spotify, Spotify, really? TH-cam has more value than the rest combined. He mentioned artists are on equal footing with Sony when it comes to making it, that is because of TH-cam.
Very true!
Crazy how these ppl act as if they create legendary music. When they only sell the music of highly creative ppl.
Quite sickening to watch a platform being given to evil corporate behavior to justify their actions...justify themselves with platitudes, smooth talk and lies.
You work for an evil corporation, you partake in evil, JUST OWN IT.

Automated taste.
Interesting interview. Streaming is not their top revenue generator
Summary:
‘Yes, we’ll always find a way to rip off artists from the money they deserve and make sure it ends up in our pockets’.

‘Bow-teek’
Who the flying fork says ‘bow-teek’.
Hence why many musicians need to stay AWAY from the music *business.*
Why would you get into business with minimal understanding of how these businesses run? If you were business savvy, you wouldn’t need these labels anyway.
Streaming has killed both music and movies. I am glad more people are hearing my music than before, but the small amount I get is ridiculous! How come I get get a subscription to McDonalds where I pay 10 bucks a month and eat everyday whatever I want and as much as I want. Why is music and movies using this model? No one else does?
Music industry is finished. No more good music anymore. I buy CDs dirt cheap and have my Library now.
Eventually every artist will be on only fans…..
AI shouldn't be a challenge because AI should be banned.
Not banned. AI should be regulated
What a disgusting man
Also bring back rock bands and a platform to support great bands they don’t get much credit anymore bands are creative.
Anyone notice how he covered his mouth when trying to say that artists have equal power as Sony Music?
lolololol
Soooo, Hip-Hop as to get beat down/go underground/die and get resurrected???
One love ❤soon
that was lame and pointless
Love the unflattering thumbnail. These people don't give any shits.
Music labels fake streaming numbers.
If a rapper gets 20 million streams they fake another 10 million. Now it’s 30 and who’s gonna notice? 😂
He spells out he doesn’t care for Spotify. Then why should artists? 🤔 especially independent…
Drop unheard 2Pac music that might help the business
They haven’t had the artists and consumers on their backside for long enough? The entirety of the business model. Art…what art? Yeah, there’s a bit but it’s so diluted. Consumers don’t even know the art in broad sense anymore. Only commerce. Poor Napster debacle wasn’t its downfall-it was the company response. Artist having power; maybe a few. He is the cigar smoking fat cat. I just don’t buy this wolf in sheep’s clothing. His body language gives him away.
These are the kind of people who ruin the world.
And a good chunk of the popular music in the last 20 years has absolutely sucked, not all of it of course
Wait, did he just say he Is worried about the art 😮. First the art then the business 😅 ok, good lad.
Bunch of BS. Tuned out at 5 mins.
Never made any art..
Cares most about art😆
„Incredibke areas of digital exploitation“. Yep.
what a BULLshet talker! "after napster we started to create better art" - and it goes uglier to more he talks.
Load of old chuff
From headline I was hoping to hear opinion of current state of music industry but this person was asking about that crap hip hop and other murican crap artists.
They killed music long long time ago. Load of crap 😆
Hopefully 1lemonsqueeze picks up his pace and we can sell his data like we did for years from his phone and have him nothing
