Aero bike, rain and Kent hills: it did not end well…

- I decided to join a strong group for a long ride in Kent, testing my aero bike Velobuild VB-R-068 outside its natural characteristics. Rim brakes, carbon wheels, rain and dirt don’t go well together. Unfortunately I ended up coming back home by train…
I’m wearing a kit courtesy of Siroko Cycling, if you want to shop for Siroko kit you can use my link to access a version of their website where prices are reduced by a further 10% on top of the existing promotions. No need to enter other codes.
In this video I’m wearing a thermal M4 jersey and SRX bibs in Large, I’m 185cm tall and 87Kg. Thank you!

Ciao,
Federico
Derailleur hanger definitely.
8kg is light enough, we are getting spoiled.
Most important is you going out for a ride despite the weather. Cao
Maybe the chain getting stuck made me feel it heavier!
good grief, I thought you were going to say that the train ticket was a hundred and something quid for a moment! I know train prices are ridiculous in UK (as is everything else), but still... Phew.
Re: skipping chain: the only time this happened to me recently (Shimano Ultegra) was when the chain got full of grit from a ride in damp, wintry conditions. I decided not to go outside in anything other than bone dry conditions from now!
I try to go for long rides in decent weather as well, while I suffer the rain on the commutes, but this time I got caught out
Lets us know how you fixed the issue with the rear derailleur/ jockey wheel.
Maybe a bent derailleur, worn chain or worn jockey wheels. Great video as always, just noticed does always happen on the quick link? Maybe not engaged right
I tried to check for a stiff link, maybe something has happened to the chain, will investigate further
Good old weather. Hope you manage to fix it soon.
I'm sure you'll have success with your gearing issues.
At least you know which are the best bikes to use for the different types of rides and conditions.
And we've all had better days on the bike.
Thank heavens for the train ride. That would have been a long ride home otherwise!
Hi Federico, I think that the issue is caused by a wrong fixation of the chain. There is a piece of metal between the two jockey wheels and the chain must pass right from this peace after the first jockey wheel and then go to the second jockey wheel. I have made this mistake once. Beautiful bike 👌
I'll check again, thanks. I'm aware of that tab and I believe it was correct
its been a while since I have ridden a 39 no the front chainring. tough climbing gear
Can't understand how they used to climb on those front rings and small cassettes!
Not sure if I'm here because of bikes or Fede's lovely Italian accent lol
😀
😂❤brake so hard 💖 🏁champion
😅😅
Regarding your shifting/indexing problems, check your derailleur hanger alignment. Hope this helps.
Thank you
Fun time Fed.
This sums up riding in the winter in the UK 🚂
It's a hard life 😅
A guess. Is the chain running under the tab between the jockey wheels? Cheers, it seems like a good group. Hang in there, my friend.
Yes, I checked that, as the first chain I fitted back in the days I did it wrong!
check the derailleur hanger...if it's out of alignment
Fantastic looking bike . I know my trek emonda alr5 is not the lightest but it's pretty good for the $ lol love it .What rain shell do you recommend.cheers 🍺🚲☕. Ps .need to take a chain link out ??? 🤔🤔
I'm cheap and did not want to pay for Gore Shake Dry, so I found a Tucano Urbano cycling rain jacket that is great, but I don't think they offer that anymore
@@fede1275 nice thank you. I'm in Vancouver Canada . Lots of rain lately. Everything normal I guess 😔🍺
Shame about the derailleur issues.. I think if you’d been on lightweight alloy rims like Shamals you would have been fine with rim brakes 😊 well done on the ride 🚴🏻👍 Pete
Sure, I should have used the other Canyon with the alloy Aksium wheels, but maybe not with the Gatorskins
@@fede1275 I use Pirelli tyres P Zero race for good weather and Cintaurato for winter/wet etc excellent tyres :)
@@n22pdf yes, I had received a lot of recommendations for Cinturatos!
Where was the coffee stop? it looked good!
Very nice indeed, that's In-Gear in Forest Row
Sorry your day ended badly. Perhaps you were actually saved Fede from busy dirty roads and insufficient coffee.
Sounds to me that the derailleur hanger is twisted. I invested in one of those hanger alignment tools and it's great, used surprisingly often. Even your chain snagging like it has would twist the hanger enough to interfere with the indexing. It only takes the bike to fall over the wrong way and you'll need it!
You can even make the tool yourself - there are TH-cam vids on it I think.
I actually got the tool, haven't used it yet. Need to get to it
lol I don't think I've ever had a ride where my derailleur doesnt stuff up.
It would almost be strange if everything was working perfectly.
Absolutely LOL
Is this Cube Attain Race?
My silver one is a Velobuild VB-R-068, my friends black one is a Cube
are mechanical discs any good
Not the ones I tried. I prefer rim brakes on aluminum wheels now for my commuter bike. There are some hybrid cable/hydro ones that are supposed to be better.
Ciao Francesco ! Can you share the gpx?

@@fede1275 will do, thanks mate!
8 kilos too much? I never go that low, my lightest bike is 8.5k , I think some of these clubs are too elitist for people willing to spend big money on a bike or get dropped
I try to spend as little as possible and go light, hence the rim brakes. I am 87Kg and need all the help I can get for the hills 😅
@@fede1275 same...
3-4 kg is miserable percentage from your whole package (body weight + bicycle+ belongings you take with you). Besides placebo you won’t feel the difference even for your hill climbs.
❤❤
You need proper bicycle with reliable Claris or Sora system and time proven aluminium wheels.
That's what I use for the commute every day
Have giant propel good at climbing but mybe its the legs and fitness😂😂
Of course 💪💪
Late upload damn, 1AM😮💨
It's my editing team's fault 😂
Well, time for disk breaks.
Time to ride in Spain 😂
Would it not be easier for the cyclist to loose a kilo or two in weight. Rather than spending crazy amount of monies on a bike to weigh kilo less.
Imagine being a kilo lighter and reducing a kilo from your bike, even better! The bike weight is tangible regardless
Aero is an absolute joke
Let's say that in the limited right circumstances it's nice, but the scope is not as wide as the marketing want us to believe
I cant get one thing. Why dont you buy ONE proper modern bike on disc brakes with modern wide wheels and wide TLR tyres? Why you build these half-functional, no braking heavy and ugly bikes. Why aero is more important than reliability of braking for somebody who dont know what zone2 is? Why somebody try to achieve low weight by building crapy bike and not by the lowering body weight. Wearing cameras and other stuff is no weight penalty and wearing disc brakes is weight penalty? Cant get it.
Fair questions and I will try to answer with more context so to make it easier to follow my process. I started with an aluminium Merida Scultura with mech discs, I paid £500 and I did not even know if I was going to enjoy road cycling at that time. That was around 10Kg. Then I got very much into it and I wanted something remarkably lighter, but at the same time I was not prepared to spend a fortune. I paid £1100 for a used Canyon Ultimate rim and that was the best money vs weight I could find in the market. Starting weight around 7.8Kg. The feeling of a lightweight rim brake bike is addictive, no matter your body mass. I am happy with my composition and I would not seek to loose weight, but I understand your comment. My GoPro does not weight much at all. I built a second Canyon Ultimate with carbon wheels and that is below 7Kg including pedals. Total cost less than £3500. I feel if I was going to replicate the same weight with a modern hydro disc bike for the same weight I would have to spend a lot more. In my particular position it works well to have an Ultimate with aluminium wheels and cheap components for the commute (i retired the Merida), a better Ultimate with deep carbon wheels that is light and still not expensive and the Velobuild aero is another addition as it was so cheap (frame is below £500). To me it works to have different bikes for different purposes, maybe at the same cost of a medium range modern hydro disc road bike. I feel I am as fast, if not more, with my Ultimate or the Velobuild than some modern bikes, apart from braking in the wet descends. I have done a lot of other sports and zone 2 is a cycling fixation imho, like ftp.
He is a former UFC fighter so you are wrong about him not having sport background. He needs to maintain weight and upper body muscles mass because he works as a bodyguard and club bouncer.
@@tongotongo3143 that might be a bit extreme, but I used to spar in boxing and kickboxing every week, yes 😄
