A Trip to the Darkest Skies in the West!

Getting out of the city to do some astrophotography really heals the soul! And what better place to go than near Great Basin National Park! I got the pleasure of going for a few nights and experiencing the breathtaking night sky. This ranks a Bortle 1 on the scale and is hands down the darkest skies I’ve seen so far. Enjoy as I take you through a night of imaging targets and using this dark sky to my advantage. We’ve captured the Witch’s Head Nebula in Orion, the Ghost Nebula in Cepheus, and got a quick 30 minutes on M78 before the sunlight started coming. Enjoy!

As child, I lived on a farm in Texas far from the nearest anything. At night I could see the Milky Way dividing the sky and thousands of stars.
I am now 72, live in a Bortle 5 town with lots of local pollution and I have cataracts. At night I can see 4 stars. Sad.
