One of the best anti war movies ever made. While watching, you feel like you're IN the submarine. You feel the fear of the crew members. Soo well done!
The German noun "Boot" is pronounced similarly to its English cognate "boat". In the context of the movie (and later TV series) it's short for "Untersee-Boot" (lit. "undersea boat", usually abbreviated as "U-Boot") meaning "submarine".
Moin ut noorddüütschland😊,..there are three versions of the film: the original cinema version, a multi-part television version from 1985 and the director's cut from 1997. The running time and cinematic nature of the versions differ significantly from one another. The boat was a very complex and expensive production for German film - even by today's standards - costing 32 million DM (converted and adjusted for inflation, €41.9 million today [2024]). In addition to several models of different sizes, the entire interior of a German Class VII submarine was recreated in great detail. The film had great international success; He was nominated for six Oscars, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award, and he also won numerous German film awards. allerbest un goote👍😁
When we first saw the film I felt claustrophobic. Even with the technical possibilities that weren't so advanced at the time, this film was excellent. Some time ago we saw a documentary about the making of the film.
The actor who plays both the captain in Das Boot and Duke Leto Atreides in David Lynch's Dune is called Jürgen Prochnow, an acting legend in Germany. While virtually every actor with a speaking part you see in Das Boot went on to have a long, successful acting career - except for Herbert Grönemeyer (he plays the war journalist/author avatar), who quit acting to focus on his already successfull music career instead - Prochnow was the only one who made it outside of the German language market for film, tv & theatre.
Germany has a very strong passport ... visa-free or visa on arrival access to 194 countries and territories! :) But germans don't travel subarmines that often, though! *lol P.S.: A short ship joke about the english knowledge of germans: Emergency call from a boat: "S.O.S.! We are sinking! We are sinking!!" < German coastguards response: "Whatt R U thinking about?"... XD
When you mentioned German movies, I wanted to suggest "Das Boot" but didn't because I thought you meant movies with landscapes - of which there are exactly zero in "Das Boot", hehe.
It's probably the best anti-war movie ever made, IMO. Nope, it's not really an action movie as in 'action packed'. Yes, there are some action scenes in it, but that's not the main focus. The focus was on the personal development of the crew on a WW2 German submarine, their involvement in the war, the mind-numbing boredom of weeks without anything to do, then a day or two of the horrors of open-ocean warfare and its consequences. All of it from the perspective of a crew of young men dragged into a war not of their chosing, having to deal with political claims and ideologies vs the realities of warfare on the loosing side.
Das Boot, a claustrophobic nightmare. They rebuilded the interieur and filmed inside. It's made in an incredible realistic way, so you not only hear all this strange sounds under water, see or hear your comrades. You mean to smell all this dirty guys after months. It's not as action packed as the trailer shows. It's more about psychology, a bored crew in the beginning, than beeing the hunted hunter, little success, dispair, discipline and feeling abused by politics. I highly recommend to watch this movie.
You're right by the main actor "K-Leun" means "Kapritän-Leutnant/Captain" of the "Boot" and the Leto Atreides in the 1st Dune-Movie. It is the German Actor Juergen Prochnow.
The film is based on the true records of a war correspondent who is shown as the main character in the film. The film is more authentic than any other war film. The film shows the psychological horror and the constant danger of death of the young soldiers. A film from the perspective of the Germans and not the winning Allies. The signal you hear in the trailer is the first echo sounder signals (which had just been invented) with which you could locate a swapped submarine. Plus the depth charges that can tear a submarine to pieces. Sheer psychological terror The submarine war in the Atlantic was cruel. From 40,000 submarine soldiers, 30,000 did not return. On Google Earth you can see all the places in the Atlantic where German submarines sank The film was cast with young up-coming actors. Only Jürgen Prochnow, who played the captain, had made many films before. Many of the young people have become very well-known actors in Germany.
"Das Boot" is a great movie. If you watch it, do yourself a favor. You should watch it in the original language with subtitles. The English version is so cleaned up that it has nothing to do with the German original. "Political correctness" in wartime? How do you imagine that? If something goes wrong, what should a soldier under stress say? "Oh, that's very suboptimal right now?"
If you ever visit Munich, take the tour in the Bavaria Film Studios. They still have the full sized model of the U-Boat and as far as I know you can still walk through it. Although if you want to watch the movie, watch the 5-hour mini series. it's the same movie, just longer. In any case, the trailer is partially lying. The suspense in the movie is extreme, but not as action-heavy as it looks. From what I heard (being a native German speaker) you should watch it in the German original with your subtitles of choice. As someone said, U-Boat is short for Untersee Boot or undersea boat in English. The usual translation is 'submarine', which is correct and incorrect at the same time. U-Boats were reliant on their diesel engine for electricity and hat to travel long stretches on the surface. They usually only dived when attacking or in bad weather. Even i the beginning of WWII they often used the gun on deck to fire on enemy ships, which made the U-Boats very vulnerable if an allied plane was close by and of course for the escorts ships. So they were boats that could dive. However, the term wasn't used in English, where everything that could dive was titled 'submarine'. I don't know if there was ever another term for them in English. The wonderland of languages.
Maybe you look up "A short behind the scenes of the Original Das Boot movie"? There are longer documentary's but this is 6 minutes, english spoken. So it could fit a reaction. The movie, specific the directors cut, is my favorite since seeing it on the tv back then. Yes, it tells a true story of U96
You really should watch that film. One of the best films ever. And the special effects are not the most disturbing or nerve wrecking in this movie. It's about the absurdity of war... But please don't call it boot. It's not about a boot but a boat !
There are not enough reactions to this movie, Best 2 and a half hours of movie made (Directors cut). It was originally made to be a mini series, but it ended up as a feature film. Longest version was the 1994 Mini series version aired on BBC, 300 minutes because it included "Flashback" scenes to the previous episodes.
No action movie. Best war movie, best german movie ever. With a budget of (today) the equivalent of €40 million. Iron Man doesn't even put on his helmet for this. TV film version: 282 min. No CGI. They recreated a submarine as a film set on a hydraulic stage to bank and tilt the entire set. A submarine was recreated on a 1:1 scale and a submersible 11-meter model for outdoor shots. The actors were no longer allowed to go into the sun to prevent tanning and were no longer allowed to shave during filming. That's why you see in the film how the actors look increasingly dirty and unkempt as they spend time at sea.
What ever you do: Watch the German language version with subtitles. More realism, better sound effects etc. You watched the trailer for the first (original version) of the two different versions of Das Boot here. The clip was from the original movie from the eighties that is available in four diffferent versions. This is the "real" Das Boot and was (and still is) an international success and it is largely agreed, that it is the best submarine movie of all times. The shortest version is the worst one (one and a half hour long) and the longest version (the original TV mini series) is five hours long and the best version. The second best version is the three hours Directors Cut. The second general Das Boot version is the modern TV-mini-series. I didn't watch it and so I can't tell much about it. Clips from that modern series didn't look bad...but what makes me thinking is the fact, that one isn't hearing much about it. Despite the fact, that it came out already some years ago. I have no clue, if this modern version is really good. It is very hard to be better than the original version and the brilliant original actors from the first, original version. But again: Allmost everybody agrees, that the original version HAS to be watched in German with English subtitles.

More like "Anti-War", since it showing the dark side
But nonetheöess it had an incredible amount of praczical effects. Started from an extreamly early sreadycam.

I have to find it!
You can walk through the inside of the Boot at Bavaria Filmstadt, Unterföhring (near to Munich). Also there is a model of the Boot.🤓
And there is a original u-boat on display in Laboe, Germany. You can visit the interior too.
