  • If you had a time machine and could go back to see Dream Theater live at any point, would you choose 2016? No? Well, Jordan thinks The Astonishing Live was the best tour the band ever put on, and that everybody who saw it knows this. He also thinks The Astonishing is among the finest Dream Theater albums he ever worked on. He must really hate metal, which begs the question of why he's been playing in a metal band for almost 2 decades.

    Every fucking band in history will always say their newest album is their best. Steven Wilson once said The Incident was the best Porcupine Tree album shortly after it was released only to retract it JUST 2 years after the end of PT saying it wasn’t strong as everything before it. DT shouldn't be an exception either as they definitely said (or would have said) the same thing about I&W all the way through DT12 while touring/promoting those albums.
    As for stage/tour production, sure. One could definitely make the case for it being their best regardless of where you stand on The Astonishing, and while technically impressive and a spectacle to watch, stage production doesn't and should never make up for a poor/average album to tour behind.

      DT has a history of doing this, true. Both Petrucci and Sherinian claimed Falling Into Infinity was the best album for its day. Then, Rudess also claimed the self-titled album with the horrible drum sound was one of the band's best. They need to accept that they will probably never top Images, Awake, and Scenes.

    We shouldnt mock them for The Astonishing. Yeah, it may not have been their greatest album. But they worked really damn hard at it. They were trying to make it more like a musical than a prog metal album. And as a former theater performee, I can tell thats what they were striving for, and that is really creative. The hidden motif of the album is about how digital music today is taking over the music industry and that people doing real music need to step up and bring them down, aka "build a new world/our new world." If you're a Dream Theater fan, you can't hate that message.

    The Astonishing was in my honest opinion the most ambitious thing Dream Theater have ever done BUT it did not work at all and as a result they released their first bad album.

  • @DfaGolden
    @DfaGolden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    They are completely different styles, you can’t compare albums that have almost no resemblance, and call one better. If Rudess likes this show better than the others why do you care? I hope you realize people have opinions.

    • @theravenskillrebelmilitia139
      @theravenskillrebelmilitia139  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nonsense. There's more dissimilarity between, say, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and St. Anger than there is between SFAM and TA, and I'm pretty confident that Kind Of Blue is a better record than St. Anger. "People have opinions" is also becoming the worst cliché/cop-out ever. That's exactly what the morons on dreamtheaterforums.org, which ought to have its name changed to dreamtheatermorons.org, always say when you bring up any indication that Dream Theater is in dire straits right now, such as poor reception to The Astonishing on Rate Your Music.
      Is it just a matter of opinion that LaBrie's singing was super pitchy on The Astonishing Tour, and that music which doesn't conform to the 12 tone scale (based on the perfect fifth interval) is usually unpleasant to the human ear?
      Is it just a matter of opinion that the plot of The Astonishing is internally contradictory and doesn't make sense? What are the odds that 250 years in the future, we are going to return to having a monarchy ruling over us, and that people are going to be having sword fights? It's so silly. Petrucci decided to mesh together Star Wars and Game Of Thrones (and 2112) not realizing they were at odds with one another.

    • @DfaGolden
      @DfaGolden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mylast Farewell yeah but how realistic is a guy realizing he was a woman in another life through hypnosis then having his hypnotist kill him any more realistic? It is a story. It may not be the best story you’ve heard but some people also really like it. Stop judging it on realism and judge it more on the fact that you don’t like it and others do.
      Also I never once mentioned James Labrie being worse then he was, that is pretty obvious. But dream theater wouldn’t feel the same without him either way.

    • @theravenskillrebelmilitia139
      @theravenskillrebelmilitia139  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OK, you do actually have a point there about the plot of Metropolis Pt. II. However, I think most people never really gave a shit about the plot of that album because the music was so good. That's all this ultimately boils down to. A lot of the music on The Astonishing is just not good. Or, what you can say for sure since there is a degree of subjectivity here is that it's the least popular/most controversial Dream Theater album to date. Rate Your Music, Amazon, iTunes, and Sputnikmusic to name a few - The Astonishing has the lowest aggregate rating of any DT studio album. Even a lot of people who "like" the album seem to concede that it could have been toned down. So it's really odd to me that Rudess and Petrucci keep hyping TA and marketing it with things like a $75 novel. Whether or not they intend for it to come across this way, a lot of the people who disliked the album including myself see that as a giant middle finger to us for not liking it. It's like, if this is where Dream Theater is at right now, why should we continue to pay attention? You didn't see Judas Priest putting out a video game and novel related to their similarly bloated Nostradamus album when that got a tepid reception among their fans.

    • @DfaGolden
      @DfaGolden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mylast Farewell I think it’s almost the same with any band for hype at least. Every band calls their new album their greatest work and the live show will be their greatest yet just to draw people in. On the whole game and book part of it, i believe the game wasn’t the bands choice but more of the choice from their management. That for sure was a cash grab, but for the book I do think the band wanted to do that, I think it sounded like a good idea in their head as a cool collectible but it just doesn’t really work. It’s definitely over priced and it won’t sell very well. I don’t think they are doing it as a whole fuck you but they probably see TA as their largest work and wanted it to be treated as such merchandise wise. I personally don’t like the album and think it shouldn’t have lasted as long as it did but that’s what we got and some people enjoy it. I just think they tried something new and it went over well with some people but didn’t go well with others. But I think they still can make great music if they don’t overdo it like TA.

    • @theravenskillrebelmilitia139
      @theravenskillrebelmilitia139  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We're pretty much on the same page, so I don't really see what we're arguing about. You think Jordan has a right to hold silly, nonsensical opinions? I think Dream Theater has gotten to a point, though, where they are going to be incapable of producing great music because of LaBrie. Case in point, the Xanadu cover they just put out. Mangini's drum mix on that is a big improvement from the self-titled and Astonishing, but it's still ruined by LaBrie's vocals being so chintzy and auto-tuned. That's what I think we can "look forward" to for Dream Theater's next album. The music will be a step up over Crapstonishing, but the vocals are going to have so many layers of technological processing going on to prop up LaBrie.

      Me too! I went into the album with the most optimistic attitude possible. I emotionally wanted it to be an improvement over the self-titled, which I did not enjoy the production of in the slightest. 20 odd listenings of The Astonishing in its entirety, I've had NO desire to revisit it in over 2 years now. The only good ideas seem to be on The Gift Of Music, Lord Nafaryus, Three Days, and A New Beginning, and even then, the drum sound puts me off.

    I think is understandable He thinks like that, He won't say anything bad about it, although I think after DT start to be more famous They start to regress, at least for what we know called as Progressive Metal, I do agree Astonishing sucks. What is sad: we will never see tours like TOT, Octavarium, Scenes, BCSL again.
