I´ve loved NEW SONG since I first heard it back in 83. It always gave me a sense of liberation, hope and new air.....I didn't even get all the lyrics back then , as a teenager in South America I was still struggling on learning English. Watching this, makes me love it even more. Who would say, a young singer trying to find a place in music industry would connect so closely to me and to many other teenagers around the world.
NEW SONG was not a monster hit on Peruvian radios (not even on Billboard) but we got to know it and listen to it . I think that sort of "not hot-not cold" popularity keeps a song in a particular mood, almost like a private gem, to be enjoyed only for those who once loved it .
I'm always back to NEW SONG when it comes to 80s songs. It throws me back to a nice place and moment in my life.
Hey! 1983 ......what a GREAT time to be 16 !

Howard Jones New Song was a huge bright spot in my youth. The words, the music, the energy lifted my spirits at a time I needed it most. The murky and sometimes unpredictable path thru high school took a back seat whenever New Song and others like it entered the air waves. To this day, I get a youthful tickle of invincibility when I hear that song.

Marc Almond of Soft Cell, trash talked Gary Numan on a TV interview. Soft Cell's biggest hit was a cover of Gloria Jones 1964 song Tainted Love. Years later, Gary has gained lots of recognition. Many artists of different genres cover Gary's work than Soft Cell's. Tainted Love doesn't count.

I never get bored of listening to New Song. It’s absolute joyous, pop perfection. The lead synth riff has to be one of the most recognisable ever.
    RIP Rupert Hine.

They did the echo using a tape loop machine that was basically 10 seconds of tape. I used 2 synths to record it in one go

Howard has some cracking hits back in the 80s which were so catchy. Loved them all. Probably my favourite was Like To Get To Know You Well which was a huge hit and I remember a boy I knew kept playing this on his ghetto blaster every time he saw me. We ended up dating for 2 years! I saw Howard live around 4 years ago and he so fab with a very loyal following.

I grew up on Howard's music. He has always been a huge inspiration to me. I myself have been a dance music recording artist for the past 30 years. A couple of years ago I got the opportunity to meet him in Boston Massachusetts. The day before I wrote a note with my story and tagged him. When we finally met I asked him if he read my story and he said yes. We shared a private conversation and he also autographed my entire cd and vinyl collection for me. Truly one of the best days of my life

in 1985 I saw Howard Jones Live in Copenhagen.
On a Sunday we sat four friends and looked in the newspaper and discovered that there was a Howard Jones concert that night, we hoped the tickets were not sold out and went there.
Howard Jones played for 3 hours despite only releasing 2 albums. He was called out to play more, he sat down at a grand piano and played potpourri over all of his, at the time, released songs. It was a great evening.

I saw Howard when I was 16, so 1986 and pretty much at his peak I believe. The concert started with this Nija wooden staff battle. Much of the show was both music and performance art. I saw Peter Gabriel for the first time a few months later and his show was also very theatrical (So Tour). Howard’s new song and video was U No I Love U or something like that, was very popular. The two songs that brought the house down were A Day in the Life (Beatles), and Thing’s can only get Better. I turn 50 next month and still have great memories of seeing theses shows.

I'd love to see you do a segment on the band Japan. Such an underrated ensemble whose glam roots gave way to some of the best music of it's time. After the bands break up, their solo efforts continued to fascinate and push the envelope on what pop could be. Very much like the musical timeline of Talk Talk, where the band starts and ends are polar opposites. Their music is not about "shifting units", but about making musical statements.

I'm a massive Numanoid. Through the late 80's and into the 90's, he faltered and copped a lot from the media (especially the UK media) who dearly wanted to see him fall into obscurity. But as we have forgotten the crisis, Gary's music has continued to inspire not only future generations, but also himself.

Saw Howard Jones open for Joe Jackson at the San Diego State Open Air Amphitheater as "Human's Lib" had just come out. He blew the audience away! We were all thrilled with Joe Jackson, but "how about that Howard Jones?" was the prevailing feeling of the evening. A few months later HoJo played there again, this time as the headliner. The audience response when he came onstage so overwhelmed Howard, it took many minutes to get the show revved up. I'll never forget it.

It was inspired by a radio interview when the DJ asked HoJo what he thought about the women in America. HoJo explained he was married and the DJ replied, "you can look at the menu, but you just can't eat."
Chords are fairly straight forward, lots of I, IV, & V in the key of A Major.
I'm sure you're aware there are 2 versions: the original minimal version on Dream into Action and the one that was produced by Phil Collins with Phil playing drums and singing back up.

All of the HoJo sheet music ever printed is on his web site, including all of the albums up to "Cross That Line" IIRC

New Song was my iconic track of the 1980s - encouraged me to get my first music keyboard at the age of 12 (OK, only a Casio MT-100), but I never looked back!
