5:58 If you’ve only seen Branagh, you should check out Poirot with David Suchet. Blows Branagh out the water. Proper adaptions of all the Poirot stories, just a fantastic series of episodes and films.
I'd agree that Suchet is miles better than Brannagh, but I found some of the adaptations a little disappointing. I vaguely remember one that ended with a chase through a brewery (possibly The Murder of Roger Ackoryd ) they were good but I wasn't keen on the added bits just for the sake of it that weren't in the books
Really brilliant! Great actors/writing/direction, Sean Connery and Vanessa Redgrave are the sexiest couple ever. All feels like the after effects of the murder of a child, proper emotions!
The Thin Man movies have always been some of my favorites. After & Another were my favs as a kid. The Kolchak series is a lot of fun!! Darren McGavin is great in the role. Just some fun mystery meets horror stuff. Also agree with watching the David Suchet Poirot series. Used to watch that with my mom all the time as a kid. Incredible production values, with run times usually around an hour.
My mom and I saw Wait Until Dark on VHS many years ago and loved it! Audrey Hepburn is my favorite actress. So talented and so stylishly dressed. I also loved her performance in Charade. The Thin Man also sounds like a good movie. Worth checking out.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Basil Rathbone’s only other in-period film is my personal favorite of his films. You can’t go wrong with Jeremy Bretts version though, pick any episode. Otherwise I recommend Poirot. That show is brilliant.
November looks like a great month. You're in for a treat with these. Wait Until Dark is fantastic. When A Stranger Calls scared me when I first watched it. Evil Under the Sun is a favorite. I watched the Kolchak series back in the day and it was a lot if fun. Really interested in seeing your reviews of all these movies
DUDE! DANIEL!!! I double-dog, NO! I TRIPLE-DOG DARE YOU TO DO WHAT THEATERS DID WHEN "WAIT UNTIL DARK" HAD ITS FIRST RUN RELEASE: for the last ten (I think) minutes the lights, the dim lights in the theater, the 'soft' lights on recessed sconces on the walls that were always lit, THEY ALL WENT OUT AND STAYED OUT AND THE SCREEN WAS ABSOLUTELY BLACK. Seriously, you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. (Yeat the fire-marshals screamed about keeping the signs lit on the exit lights, but the theater I was in had little shades on this). Watchers are plunged into Audry Hepburn's world, and it's. . . . yeah. . . not giving anything away. I saw it with a couple of guys from my scout troop (we were in junior high, i.e. middle school, eighth grade), and this SCARED THE BEJESUS OUT OF US!!!!! So: put your Big Screen tv on 'movie' mode (not standard or dynamic), get black out drapes for the windows, (even at night the ambient light gets in) Get your viewing room as dark as you can!!!! Heh. You will not regret this! When this was revived as a broadway play they did this too in the theater where it was playing. Fun, Fun, FUN!!!!----JY
I am also not keen on most Agatha Christie movies - they generally move slowly. But yes, Witness for the Prosecution is a fine courtroom/murder mystery - Agatha Christie said it was her favorite film adaption of any of her novels. But the best Christie film adaption in my humble opinion is And Then There Were None 1945, directed by Rene Clair. Its light and witty, very entertaining. Also, can I suggest a murder/noir called Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946). Stylish small town noir, great script, great performances by Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott and Kirk Douglas (in first performance) - and wonderful lush score by Miklos Rozsa. PS really enjoy your channel.
Evil Under the Sun is in a tie with Rear Window for my favorite movie of all time. I saw it when it came out and the scenery and costumes are top notch. Love the cast too!!! Peter Ustinov is my favorite Poirot.
Hangover Square is brilliant, and you’re right about it having some Inner Sanctum vibes. I just watched Fear in the Night a few days ago and mostly enjoyed it. It reminded me (a bit) of something like Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. As for Deathtrap…You’ll love it, I’m sure.
You're gonna love the Sherlock Holmes movies. I thought it was curious that the blurays showed more grain than the DVDs... higher resolution, I suppose. Still, they are exceptional; watch for the details in tweed jackets and various fabric patterns. They did an exceptional job restoring these, especially considering what they had to work with as you mentioned. If you like Sherlock Holmes, I highly recommend you also check out the Charlie Chan movies (starring Warner Oland, Sidney Toler, or Roland Winters), Mr. Moto movies (starring Peter Lorre), and Mr. Wong movies (starring Boris Karloff or Keye Luke). They all work on a very similar premise, and all are very entertaining.
I would love for you to do a whole episode of Barbara Stanwyck ,my favorite actress. Talking about Kolchak brought back memories of my late brother. We both loved the show. It only had one season unfortunately, it was so much fun.
My favourite Agatha Christie adaptation is the 1978 Peter Ustinov 'Death On The Nile.' It's a lot better then the Branagh version, with some different characters. The cast is incredible, including Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith and David Niven. But I also love 'Evil Under The Sun;' it's a lot of fun (that rhymes!)
new suscriber here,I recently discovered your channel and I'm enjoying all your huge lists, realizing in wonder the so many movies I havent seen yet and I intend to watch, cos terror mistery and sci fi are my cup of tea! the moment I saw the movie poster When a stranger calls', another movie came to my mind, since I think the posters are very similar,it is "Dead of winter" from the late 80s with Mary Steenburgen, if you havent seen it it is my suggestion for the month!😊 love your channel ,thanks for sharing your opinions and your suggestions!
If only they would have known there would be five sequels, they wouldn't have named it, "The Thin Man" because that is a character related only to the case in first film. Imagine if the Sherlock Homes books were titled, "A Study in Scarlett", "After a Study in Scarlett", "Another Study in Scarlett", "Shadow of a Study in Scarlett", "A Study in Scarlett Goes Home", and "Song of a Study in Scarlett".
Cozy Cobwebs strikes again...with lots of great murders on celluloid for our viewing pleasure! Well done sir. BTW, I love the word "titular," probably because I'm an adolescent trapped in a 46 year old man's body
haha Thank you! I realized I didn’t even use the word correctly. I almost called him the titular Thin Man, but actually the term didn’t refer to him at first, but then it came to with sequels. Very confusing.
'Hangover Square' is based on a novel by Patrick Hamilton who also wrote the play 'Gaslight,' which was turned into the Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer classic of the same name, and where the term 'Gaslighting' come from.
Been a subscriber and a fan for a while but this is my first comment. I just watched Wait Until Dark for the first time last week and absolutely loved it. I paid 19 cents to rent it on Amazon but now I'm going buy it. Thinking that Sherlock set may be part of that order too. Watched some movies off your witches and werewolves videos. Keep up the good work!
Great idea! And great list. I am not a fan of the modern Agatha Christie films. I really like Branagh as an actor and he's a great Poirot but I don't think he's a great director. The casting is underwhelming and everything feels CGI digitized. Death on the Nile 1978 is terrific and is the polar opposite of Branaghs films. Great cast and shot on real locations. I also highly recommend Sydney Lumet's Mystery on the Orient Express 1974 for all the same reasons. If you want another courtroom murder mystery I suggest Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution.
Love Witness for the Prosecution! But yeah, Death on the Nile looked pretty bad visually, but Haunting in Venice was shot on location and looks beautiful.
Witness for the Prosecution is my favourite all time pure entertainment movie! And Murder on the Orient Express is surely far and away the best of the all star murder mysteries! Not many thrillers have had me crying for the feelings of minor characters…
Whoa, sounds like a cache of cool movies! I enjoy just about everything with Hercule Poirot and really enjoyed Kolchack - The Night Stalker show when I discovered it a couple of years ago. Have you ever considered hosting an online watch party?
For years the when I was a kid my family had a full DVD collection of the Thin Man and I only watched the first three as well! Once I got my hands on all the Warner Archive I do love the final three as well and you are spot on with your assumption, The Thin Man Goes Home is the best of the final three. The characters are so much fun.
Just subscribed to your channel. So far I'm having a whole lot of fun. As far as murder mystery, the Sherlock Holmes series staring Jeremy Bret puts the Basil Rathbone series to shame.....IMHO And as far as murder with a courtroom setting. Witnesses for The Prosecution tops my list....just throwing it out there in the off chance you haven't experienced those
I'd never heard of that Alistair Sim movie! I love him in A Christmas Carol, and St. Trinian's...I'll have to check it out. One of my brother's saw Wait Until Dark, and he said that it was really good. I really like the Kolchak series, and when I was looking for it, saw the movies and bought them, too.
I grew up watching Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes too and have always loved this set of films. I bought the entire restored collection. They’re clean and high definition. BTW, “Basil” is pronounced with a short a sound, as in “cat.”
x I have seen Anatomy of A Murder and it is fantastic! x After seeing this video, I am going to watch When A Stranger Calls and will think about watching one of those Basil Rathbone films (I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, but already have a long November Movie list!).
Love the Rathbone Universal Holmes series and yes I a hammer fan but I don't love their version of hound of the baskervilles that much although Cushing and Morell do a really good job! I saw some of the thin-man movies as a child and enjoyd them well but I never got into it again as an adult Gotta check them out again! Perhaps you've never heard about the two british 1980s films starring Ian Richardson He is definetly my second favourite Holmes and he was such a fantastic actor for example as a corrupt politician in the original british ,house of cards' version Worth to check out him as Sherlock!
Lol your movies are all over the place just like me,Old school Sherlock,The Night Stalker,And Thin man movies are all ok too but now I actually wanna take your advice and watch that Midnight in Venice movie since you gave it a mini good review Thanks
I added The Hound of the Baskervilles to my watchlist for this month. I know I saw a handful of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies when I was a kid but I can't remember which ones. Not sure if I'll be watching many other murder mysteries but it's a genre I really enjoy. I rarely watch new releases but I'm gonna check out Sofia Coppola's new movie, Priscilla, and David Fincher's new one, The Killer. I'm a huge Sofia Coppola fan and this looks like a return to form for her stylistically. I think Fincher is incredibly talented but his movies are sort of hit or miss for me. I know the writer of Seven wrote this movie so that gives me some hope. I also love Michael Fassbender. Anatomy of a Murder is so good! I love Lee Remick and Jimmy Stewart is terrific in it. Hope you enjoy it.
D, I’m right with you on November cozy mysteries, a great season for misty moors and vine laden mansions. By the way, William Powell is not the titular THIN MAN nor is the detective Nick Charles The Thin Man. The real “Thin man” refers to the murder victim in the first movie played by actor Edward Ellis. Just some trivia for you, my friend. Enjoy your chilly, foggy November eves! -Glen
Death Trap is a blast. If you like that, I recommend Club Dread. It's referred to as comedy slasher (which sound awful) but it's fun and takes the concept of murder mystery twists even further.
All of The Thin Man films are great, but the first three are the classics. 1978s Death on the Nile is perfection - much better than the earlier Murder on the Orient Express, which has an impeccable supporting cast, but Albert Finney's Poirot comes off as a bellowing grouch with a thicker than pea soup accent and Sidney Lumet directs with all of the passion and urgency of a deflating tire. Green for Danger is good, as are the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple films. The Spiral Staircase is great as well. Witness for the Prosecution with Laughton and Dietrich. The British film Sapphire is interesting. The original Cape Fear puts the remake to shame. The Hildegarde Withers mysteries are wonderful - especially the first three with the amazing Edna May Oliver. Murder at the Vanities is an oddball concoction you might like, as is the Barbara Stanwyck mystery Lady of Burlesque. A few posters mentioned The Last of Sheila, which is very underrated.
If you haven't seen them the perry Mason movies from the 1930s starring Warren Williams are great. Not court room dramas but witty mystery along the line of the thin man movies. Case of the lucky legs, the howling dog, and the courios bride. All top notch. You should really enjoy them. Can't recommend them enough.
Wow. You mentioned Kolchak. That's saying a lot. Also, check out Murder by Decree which is a Sherlock Holmes VS Jack the Ripper film starring Christopher Plummer and James Mason. A must watch if you're a fan of anything Sherlock.
Daniel, you are The Man! Your channel is now my first port of call when looking for movie recommendations. I have the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes boxset. Absolutely excellent. Got all The Thin Man movies. Honestly, for me, the best Hercule Poirot has to be David Suchet. Not sure if his Poirot series aired in the U.S. but I can't see anyone bettering his portrayal of the Belgian detective. The Night Stalker films and series are always enjoyable. If you're looking for hour long, black and white detective mysteries, you can't do better than these: Charlie Chan (Warner Oland, Sydney Toler and Roland Winters) Mister Moto (Peter Lorre) Bulldog Drummond (John Howard) Mister Wong (Boris Karloff) Dick Tracy (Ralph Byrd, Morgan Conway) Cheers mate. Hope you and yours stay well.
Don't forget the Whistler, the Lone Wolf,Crime Dr or the Falcon,Those are all pretty cool too but Sherlock and Charlie Chan were my favorites growing up,Bulldog Drumonds real good too
By the way I’m really pissed off at you. I had told myself I was done with physical media. I have tons of DVDs and had never really upgraded to Blu Ray. After watching you for the first time a couple of weeks ago I have spent a few hundred bucks on mostly Scream Factory stuff. Thanks for the great content and excellent reviews.
"Wait Until Dark" was a great premise but Alan Arkin didn't carry it for me because he was associated with too many odd ball comedies and that was the guy I could see in the character. It was like when Bill Murray did all his tongue in cheek comedies and then he suddenly tried to do The Razor's Edge.
I highly recommend skipping a copy of THE LAST OF SHEILA into your watch list. Killer cast and a screenplay by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim! Also, DEATH ON THE NILE is the Ustinov Poirot that you want to start with.
If you'd like something a little more tongue in cheek, look for Neil Simon's Murder By Death (1976). It's a great 'old house' murder mystery comedy spoofing older detective movies, such as the Thin Man series (represented by David Niven and Maggie Smith), The Maltese Falcon (Peter Falk plays the Bogart character), Mr. Wong (spoofed by Peter Sellers), and Agatha Christy's Hercule Poirot (James Coco), and Ms. Marple (Elsa Lanchester).
Have you watched The Nancy Drew Mysteries from the 40s with Bonita Granville? Those are really fun teen movies but looks like they haven’t released anything but the DVD collection.
When a Stranger Calls is not at all what you think it is. It's interesting for sure, a bit slow after the opening but personally, I think it pays off in the end.
DEEP RED, MURDER BY DEATH, THE NICE GUYS, REAR WINDOW, THE LONG GOODBYE, BLOW OUT , DRESSED TO KILL, THE CAT AND THE CANARY, CLUE, PRISONERS, BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMMAGE, CAT O NINE TAILS, FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET, THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, THE HOUSE OF LAUGHING WINDOWS, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE,DONT TORTURE A DUCKLING, EYEBALLS, PSYCHIC,
I watched Wait Until Dark a couple of weeks ago and I don't know if I was in the wrong frame of mind at the time. but it wasn't nearly as entertaining as I remember it being. That's one of the worse things, when you get excited to re-watch something you loved and it's only average.
First of all, I really enjoy this Channel. Sherlock Holmes: I have watched the entire collection, Basil Rathbone is magnificent but I have problems with the depiction of Dr Watson, he is too much of a bumbling fool in these films. Furthermore, I prefer versions that are true to the books by Arthur Conan Doyle, here we have too much "based on characters by". I can strongly recommend the TV-series with Jeremy Brett, for me he is the perfect Sherlock Holmes. Anatomy of a murder: Awesome. There are some great extra fatures on the Criterion disc, watch them. Thin Man: Love them, although the last installments are not as good as the earlier. Watched them for the first time about fifty years ago, the Archive restorations are great. It was pure happiness when Warner began releasing these blu-rays. Poirot: Peter Ustinov and Albert Finney are good as Poirot, but my favourite is David Suchet. In my opinion, the Branagh Poirot is just peculiar. Scarlet Street: Watched it a very long time ago (>30 years), I don't remember the details, but it made an impression. At least I remember that Edward G. was nothing but magnificent in this film. An Inspector Calls: Almost bought it a few years ago. Not the ususal Alastair Sim, eagerly awaiting your review.
Thanks for the kind words, and I appreciate the notes on these movies! I haven’t seen Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock series, so it’s good to know that’s worth watching.
For me, "Deathtrap" just didn't do it for me. It was one of those films that everybody talked about but I just couldn't get into. I'm not a big fan of the main actors I guess.
"NoveMURDER" is the single worst thing I've ever hear 🤢🤮Unsubscribed, blocked, and reported. Can't wait to hear about the gems you dig up! 10/10 fricheks
5:58 If you’ve only seen Branagh, you should check out Poirot with David Suchet. Blows Branagh out the water. Proper adaptions of all the Poirot stories, just a fantastic series of episodes and films.
Absolutely agree, David Suchet is THEE best Poirot.
I'm so glad that they did all of the Poirot stories with just David Suchet. He's fantastic in the role.
Couldn’t agree more vehemently!! Suchet IS Poirot and that series is beautifully done.
Also…Sidney Lumet’s MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is top shelf Agatha Christie!
Really brilliant! Great actors/writing/direction, Sean Connery and Vanessa Redgrave are the sexiest couple ever. All feels like the after effects of the murder of a child, proper emotions!
Basil and Nigel in the fall is heaven on earth viewing. An Inspector Calls is super great.
I just watched it last night and really enjoyed it!
The Thin Man being a 6 film series is something I just learned today. Lol.... Thank you and great selection of watches for the month!
haha Cool! Thanks Ken, and thanks for watching!
November looks like a great month. You're in for a treat with these. Wait Until Dark is fantastic. When A Stranger Calls scared me when I first watched it. Evil Under the Sun is a favorite. Oh, that is awesome!! Now I’m extra excited to watch it!
We just watched Rear Window again last week. Must pay close attention to every scene, so maybe many little details. Classic movie.

I do want to see Murder by Decree, for sure!
If you're looking for hour long, black and white detective mysteries, you can't do better than these:
Charlie Chan (Warner Oland, Sydney Toler and Roland Winters)
Mister Moto (Peter Lorre)
Bulldog Drummond (John Howard)
Mister Wong (Boris Karloff)
Dick Tracy (Ralph Byrd, Morgan Conway)
Cheers mate. Hope you and yours stay well.
Hey thanks very much! That’s a good list of recommendations right there.
Thanks for the great content and excellent reviews.
hahaha I’m so sorry, but also not sorry. 😉

Catch Diana Rigg in the avengers TV series.
I haven’t, but those sound great! I’m always curious about teen movies from that era.
When a Stranger Calls is not at all what you think it is. It's interesting for sure, a bit slow after the opening but personally, I think it pays off in the end.
DEEP RED, MURDER BY DEATH, THE NICE GUYS, REAR WINDOW, THE LONG GOODBYE, BLOW OUT , DRESSED TO KILL, THE CAT AND THE CANARY, CLUE, PRISONERS, BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMMAGE, CAT O NINE TAILS, FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET, THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, THE HOUSE OF LAUGHING WINDOWS, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE,DONT TORTURE A DUCKLING, EYEBALLS, PSYCHIC,
all of The Thin Man movies are awesome!
Great selection. Next up Decmember 😁
Ohhhh that’s so good 😅
I watched Wait Until Dark a couple of weeks ago and I don't know if I was in the wrong frame of mind at the time. but it wasn't nearly as entertaining as I remember it being. That's one of the worse things, when you get excited to re-watch something you loved and it's only average.
Deathtrap is so much fun!!!
Oh good!!
Deathtrap is great. It's based on a theater play.
Have you seen " The last of Sheila " ? A whodunit that is not bad at all.
I haven’t yet! I’ve heard it’s good.
Basil Rathbone, Basil pronounced with a short a sound.
I believe it's pronounced bah-sil Rathbone. Just saying.
Don't go into "Wait until dark" with huge expectations.
Totally agree concerning Nigel Bruce as Watson and David Suchet IS Poirot as Rathbone is Holmes
Thanks for the kind words, and I appreciate the notes on these movies! I haven’t seen Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock series, so it’s good to know that’s worth watching.
IMHO Basil Rathbone is the best Sherlock there ever was and Peter Ustinov the best Poirot.
Sounds like I’m in for a good month!
For me, "Deathtrap" just didn't do it for me. It was one of those films that everybody talked about but I just couldn't get into. I'm not a big fan of the main actors I guess.
I would like to recommend Charlie Chan. The 20th century fox ones r much better tha the Monogram titles
If you haven't seen it you must see And Then There Were None (1945)
Seen it a couple times. It’s fun!
"NoveMURDER" is the single worst thing I've ever hear 🤢🤮Unsubscribed, blocked, and reported. Can't wait to hear about the gems you dig up! 10/10 fricheks
Awww, you don’t like my puns? 😂
@@cobwebschannel I chuckled and it accelerated my male pattern baldness.
