      It was a perfect execution of a really shitty situation. Kudos to Naren and the writers for writing and directing themselves out of a really really tricky situation. Was such a bummer at the time because Cas Anvar was instrumental in banding all the fans together to save the show. Guess it went to his head. I miss the guy though.

    Thanks for discussing Alex's death and how/why it was handled that way in the series. I completely understand why no one wants to discuss the real world reasons for Cas leaving the show. But it felt like no one from the show wanted to even discuss Alex's death in the show. (Except wonderful Wes slipping a few times and mentioning Alex. :)
    Cas/Alex was a huge part of the show for five seasons and I felt like he portrayed Alex from the books perfectly. Losing Alex from the series story line was a big loss. Thanks for giving him a hero's exit and it was awesome how it was handled from a story perspective. I also loved the references and remembrances of Alex woven into season 6. The scene with Bobby and Amos singing "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" was awesome. (^‿^)

      I think that is also why Fred was killed in the way he was as well... how can you surprise people who knows what is coming from reading the books. You need to make changes...
      I always hear people hate movie versions of books because they try to be the same thing, but fail. Then again with Movies usually you don't have the writer of the book doing the screenplay. That is what makes the Expanse so special since it had Ty & Daniel working on it.

    • @robertcavanna789

      @@TYandThatGuy True. With The Expanse TV series, you can't really make the complaint "this isn't what the original writers would have done". Although there was one misstep in the whole series that really bothered me; when Amos has his breakdown on Ilus. Whereas book Amos seemed to be utterly even keel in that clusterfuck of a crisis. For the show, i just felt that particular Amos collapse came out of left field. Didn't feel Amos-y.

      @@TYandThatGuy It's a point I always try to impress upon people when they complain about book to visual media adaptations and yell that "it didn't happen that way in the book!", even if it is just a small change. If an adaptation did everything 100% the same as the book it is based on, it would be completely predictable and I feel that people would eventually get bored with it.
      I always appreciate small changes if they fit well into the story (changing a lot of stuff and essentially writing a different story altogether is another matter, of course). As sad as it was, I felt that Alex's death was a change that fit very well, as it had been hinted for the entire show that high G maneuvers could cause a stroke and we finally got to see that dire warning pay off. That it was borrowed from Fred's death in the books was fine as well, as Fred's show death was equally fitting for his character.

    No plan, no buildup, just suddenly....gone. That's exactly how something like a stroke can happen, and considering how often it's mentioned as a risk it makes perfect sense that someone would go out that way. It's a reminder that the crew of the Roci isn't just out there hitting the warp speed button and then chillin in their recliners- space travel is legit dangerous and Alex wasn't in great shape, as has also been noted in-character.

    • @alastormedial

      Considering it wasn't reshot, just edited together, they got really lucky with the scene where the Razerback arrives on scene - Alex appears visibly stunned and shakes his head like he's in pain. Fits perfectly with the narrative that he's just had a stroke, and yet while filming that was presumably just shaking off the juice or something.

      @@alastormedial totally, As Ty mentions, in the books Fred Johnson dies of a stroke suddenly, just like this, when Fred was shot in the show, I was a little sad that we were robbed of that scene, the realization of how fragile humans are floating around in tinfoil cans at speeds our squishy asses can barely stand. Also in the book the setup was that because of the rocks hittin' and chaos in the system, supplies were mad short, so the only juice available was the shitty kind that wasn't as effective and had harsher side effects.

      @@dapeach06 But that's entirely my point for seeing him try to be a better person thirty years later~! :D Instead of Alex literally speaking the antagonist of the series and failing to realize that (the one time he brings it up in the books someone interrupts him and they never speak of it again~!) is not comparable to overt racism, but he was established to be a capable pilot as well as someone Fred Johnson (who is dead now!) trusted. I understand being offended and never wanting to see them again, but have some imagination and think of Kit. There's no reason to write that off. Alex's final chapter in Levithan Falls is one of my favorite parts of the story and we aren't going to get that because Cas Asner is a fucking piece of shit. Have a heart. Believe. Also PS Bull straight up was despised by most of the people who knew him before he died in Book 3. He literally spaced that one guy over drugs, right?

    I always loved in how the BBC TV show *Blake's 7* that the actual titular character "died" and the show continued (the very reluctant to be typecast lead actor had gotten an offer from the Royal Shakespeare Company that he couldn't refuse). Really interesting to hear most of season 5 was filmed when the decision was made, I felt like the timing and way Alex was killed off seemed pretty natural, especially considering how unplanned it was. In the first few seasons Alex felt indispensable, but his character became less sympathetic gradually, and in season 5 it felt like other characters were given more to do so he was less needed. If I hadn't heard about the real life reasons for killing off his character, I probably wouldn't have even guessed it wasn't planned. Also huge credit to the cast and crew for how that situation was handled and the support that was given for the women who came forward.

    During an earlier episode when the Rocinante was chasing the asteroid Eros, Alex himself explains that under high G's, even all juiced up, they aren't likely to survive, so it was unintentional foreshadowing. I thought you guys handled his death perfectly, especially since I had no idea the actor was leaving the show beforehand and was totally caught off guard by the scene. I do wish there was more time spent by the crew mourning his loss, though. Not quite Spock-in-photon-torpedo-with-bagpipes levels, maybe, but more than just a casual conversation on the quarterdeck.

    • @matfax
      @matfax 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was foreshadowed but not for season 5. It's not comparable with e.g. Rob Stark's death which served a purpose in the story, to setup a legacy and motivations for the Stark family, their destiny and so much more. Rob's death was necessary at about this point. It wasn't just about showing off that everyone can die anytime. That's not why you follow a story. Alex was the brain of the Rocinante. Writing this character off early before the final battle was an anticlimactic but unavoidable choice. Unless they substituted the actor with someone else or avoided letting the actor go, which probably wouldn't have resolved a ruined atmosphere on set once he's present, and this also affects the overall quality of the production. To me, the Rocinante is more entangled with the whole plot than any other character. I think Alex should have died piloting her in season 6. Unless you take the following books into consideration. I'm not comfortable with the time span between both storylines.

    They did the best they could with the unexpected exit of Cas, and you've addressed it today better than last time you had the chance (with Dominique), because you're adknowledging that it had to be forced. But sure, you made it make sense. Good job. That being said, I would've replaced his character a bit with TV Bull or somone else. The idea of all of them getting to pilot the Rosinante like it wasn't a big deal felt a bit forced.

      Agree, Bull's actor left for another show unfortunately. He got along really well with Holden and I would have loved for him to take over piloting. They could have had Clarissa pilot potentially because she has some experience, but that would have been a huge departure from what she does in the books.

    I think most of us in the audience knew why Alex was killed off, so that in itself didn't raise the stakes as much (at least for me) as Wes thinks.. but season 6 is the final season so that means the gloves can come off and no one is entirely safe and that's what made the final season extra suspenseful for me.

    I think they handled it as well as they possibly could, given the circumstances. The more I thought about it after seeing the S5 finale, the more it made sense and felt fitting. Killing Alex off is much better than recasting him in the 6th and final season (terrible idea). And killing him off in the finale is better than writing him out between seasons (I agree with Naren). And the death is heroic, fitting for the character, and very much justified by the scene that was already shot. They acknowledge that it is very dangerous, a danger they have been flirting with for five seasons now, and Alex knows this and makes the choice to risk his life to save Naomi anyway.
    And its in a moment, narratively, when ALL the characters are risking their lives to try and save each other. Holden and Bull fully expect to die fighting the Free Navy, buying time for Alex to save Naomi. And Naomi threw herself into the vacuum to escape Marco, yes, but also to save Jim, Alex, and the Roci from Marco's trap. The whole crew is willing to sacrifice their lives for each other in this season, they put themselves in harm's way, and Alex ends up making that sacrifice. Good stuff.
    And rather than just ignoring the death in S6, it has a big impact on all the characters, as they are all exhausted and grieving. And despite S6's breakneck pace, there are still several moments of fond reflection for Alex. You can't say they didn't do the character justice.

  • @MTerrance
    @MTerrance 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that takes me out of stories is knowing a character cannot die because it would blow the story. It absolutely diminishes the tension. Casually killing off characters is not a solution either. I thought the end of Alex was perfect. So often it is overdone that you can see it coming from a mile away. It is a tough line to walk, not tipping it off and not keeping the character around despite every reason to believe the character will die. Drama is often a willing suspension of disbelief and preserving the illusion is no small feat.

    I completely get why things went down for the show the way they did. The only thing I think was a let-down was that we missed out on Fred's death in season 6, which in turn changed the entire feel of that battle. It was one of my absolute favorite moments from the books, how it was foreshadowed by Bobbie hearing the medical alert going off but tuning it out, and we KNEW something bad had happened but didn't find out what until the chapter's end. How it went from a bitter defeat on the part of the Free Navy to Marco painting it as his own personal victory, and how much that whole situation affected Filip.
    At the same time, I love that the books and series are in many ways two separate but intertwined stories, and there are interesting differences that set them apart. To be honest, I was way more worried you guys were gonna kill off Drummer!

    The Origin Story of Amos in Memorys Legion is worthy of a spin-off show of its very own for Wes, that said the key characters deserve a further spin-off show, including the Miller/Investigator character; if something for these characters can be developed in a new story arc then that would be fantastic and it would get a lot of buy in from the fan base. As for the Death of Alex, it was a sad situation and you had to roll the dice, it was a tough call for sure, but it was the right call, thats the main thing for the character.

    I think Alex’s death would’ve had more shock value if it wasn’t for the ensuing investigations about the actor. At the time it felt very tacked on especially when one saw the original stills on how it was filmed.
    Fred Johnson’s death had more shock value, and this was before reading the books and knowing he dies in book 5 than 6
    SPOILER ALERT
    Just finished book 9. Amazing stuff- but throughout I was checking to see how integral Alex’s character is to the story. It’s not but he’s useful as another Roci crew member to play off, especially when Naomi returns to Freehold after Bobbie dies in Book 8.
    So, to allow some continuity for Alex’s character after the 30 yr jump- could they have a new pilot to fill in for Alex? Who knows, Melas Kamal would be in his 40’s and flying with the Roci crew with a small backstory before book 7 to assist continuity of Alex’s character- but without him becoming a grandfather in book 9? Maybe he has his own wife and family he doesn’t want to abandon on their way to Nieuwstad?
    I’m just imagining new novellas in this universe

    • @markschmidt8967
      @markschmidt8967 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking Melas too. All this time behind the scenes he could of gotten experience/training as a pilot to follow in his father's footsteps. With the time jump it's also plausible he could develop a relationship with Bobbie as her actions suggest she would reach out to Alex's family and the whole Mars connection. If Melas piloted the Roci the whole "we see your father in you" arc could be of value to make it feel a bit like family again with all involved. Just spitballing as my desire to see the last 3 books come alive is overwhelming! :)
