Let me put things in perspective. Scientifically, black ash indicates incomplete combustion, meaning there's a higher carbon content because not everything was fully oxidized to CO₂ during combustion. On the other hand, white ash indicates the oxidation of minerals such as magnesium and calcium, signaling more complete combustion. Flushing can really make a difference, especially in non-organic setups where salts containing phosphorus or nitrogen are used. These can lead to nutrient buildup that affects combustion and the final quality of the product. The way you grind your weed is also important. Smaller particles increase surface area, allowing for more oxidation and better combustion. Humidity is another key factor that can interfere with the combustion process, as can oxygen levels - although that's usually less of a concern. In addition, the curing and drying process is critical. If the plant isn't cured properly, excess moisture can cause uneven burning and black ash, even if everything else is done correctly. Plant genetics also play a role, as different strains have different mineral content, which naturally affects how well they burn. It's also important to consider nutrient timing - overfeeding late in the growing cycle can result in nutrient buildup, even with flushing. Proper airflow during combustion will ensure a more complete burn, while poor airflow can result in black ash. Finally, any residual chemicals such as pesticides that weren't flushed out can leave residues that affect how cleanly the weed burns. TL;DR: Don't be careless. Dial in your grow, dry and cure properly, and make sure you grind your weed smaller than last time so you end up with white ash like I do.
"The belief that white ash is a sign of high-quality cannabis is a common misconception that has been circulating for many years. Unfortunately, this belief is not based on any scientific evidence and has led to the exclusion of many excellent strains of cannabis that produce darker-colored ash."
As a grower myself I have found that black ash is present more depending on how long you flush the plant for. My first grow I flushed the plant with straight water for 2 weeks and the Ash was pure white and so smooth to smoke. My 2nd grow I flushed for 1 week and the Ash was no where near as white. My J kept going out and it was not as smooth to smoke, more of a tickly cough. So since learning this I have found that Flushing the plant for about 10days and its perfect.
Flush plays a small part of it there is many things that make white ash dry cure moisture content plus your rolls play a big part in white ash aswell so many variables

many growers add cal mag in the last 3 weeks, not good because calcium and nitrogen in the cal mag make more chlorophyl. You also need to reduce nitrogen entirely for the last month. Potassium burns hot and so does magnesium causing whiter ash. Concentrate on those, dont spray your plants with fungicides and bug sprays. Dry till snap and cure for at least 30 days to get the chlorophyl out. 54% works better then 60% for white ash. there is a reason why good cigars burn white, magnesium. Black ash is chlorophyl, moisture content, nitrogen, not letting the plant fade and sprays on the buds. Flushing has been debunked! the fade happens naturally but nitrogen must be taken out. i cure for 2 years :) and its noodle leg chronic with 0 sprays whitest ash uve evr seen and FIRE! i like 7 days of very cold filtered water thru my medium to get the roots to release enzymes into the nuggets. the enzymes slow down the cure .
try 50/50 on your dry instead of 60/60, strain dependant. the secret had to be let out of the bag for the greater good. The cure is important, most cannabis cup winners are 6 month cure as it balances the nose and terps with high thc content. 1year is better, cbgs and terp profiles change drastically. My cure goes from a 10 day dry to grove bags for 3 months, i burp them weekly. They like to stick to 60% and thats fine for the terps for 3 months. My room is set to 10c , merv 13 filtered air, and 55% humidity and dark. I use a fridge and tweeked it. after 3 months it gets put into glass jars and burped for 5 minutes every 2 weeks for the next 6 months. I start to consume it at the 1 year cure maybe a little early sometimes hehehhehe its gold man it looks like gold and end the cure at 2 years. 1 pinner gets 3 chronic heads tarded meang. No sprays, no seeds, no pm, no botrytis, just FIRE! i merv 13 and uv all my air all the time. been doing this since 94 guys.
ps all commercial growers spray weekly as their ipm schedule, disgusting. steam your substrate and merv 13 your air in and recirc, clean with h2o2 daily. what drew says its fire i wouldnt touch, ever!!! im a consulatnt for the cannabis sector in canada and the US, test your nugs and you will see. Also a low metal ppm fertilizer like kyle kushman uses veganics is awesome. thats been the final tewak in my systems and WOW! just make sure you dont feed any nitrogen the last month. The big growers also use chelates to help with the metals and ferts in the end. How about some cold filtered water guys !!! cannabis loves lead and cadnium, it just absorbs it at incredible rates. switch to a low ppm or pp billion fert. Organic guys will have to use chelates . Undercurrent oxygenated water river systems grow the best cannabis on earth, second would go to steamed promix bx and canna coco, third would be rockwool and organic soil aka living soils. grow fire and stay healthy my friends!
lastly , genetics. Most of the seds are there are cousins havng sx with cousins. thats why it takes 20 seeds to get a good cut, label all your seeds and clone them and label the clones. Then go to an old school seed company that offers regular seeds, like a northern lights, skunk or a pure afghani #1, kushes work well. You grow the out in a seperate tent and find a male, collect the pollen and store it ziplock in the fridge for a month. then its ready to hit your clone youve chosen. grab a q tip and tap the bud thats 4 weeks old with it to get it sticky, then tap the pollen and tap the bud back. label the stem with a white tape and write on it the cross it is. wait till its 9 weeks before you harvest to make sure the seeds are nice and dark tiger like. congrats you have stabilized into an f1. grow your seeds and pick a clone to keep going, any males , save the pollen its gold baby, gold! Be a G and make your own fire, i just made skunkscotti :) skunk #1 x biscotti with an f1 skunk male. also did a tom ford x blueberry with dj short pollen. Enjoy yourselves!
If u add it in the last 3 weeks.it will slow.down and lengthen flowering.... what u chatting m8 who adds calmag at the end the plant don't need it at all
Black ash could potentially be from leftover pesticides or fertilizers in or on the flower, and even though there are so many other factors that could cause it to be black ash, with how many places have been getting hit with bad testing practices, I would prefer clean burning flower for sure now that we live in a world where we can afford to be picky about our cannabis choices.
So I've done charcoal burning!!! The lesson learnt from doing this from a scientific point of view is that when your charcoal burns to "White Ash" it's correctly processed in that toxins of Chlorophyll's & such like...if it burns black it hasn't finished the process & you have to start again as the toxins are locked in...& you don't want you BBQ tasting toxic would you!?! Same principle!!! I've been growing sun grown 100% organic soil for the last 36 years... Flushing is an important part of the process...but so is drying & curing too...one love 💜
Lotta factors that can cause black ashes, including moisture level. Even some of my best organically grown will burn black before it's cured all the way. Still smokes smooth, tastes great, and gets me baked. 💚🌞🌱🔥🧬🌿👊💨💨
As someone who has been rolling non stop every day for over a decade. None of this matters in a blunt. If you want to avoid this then grind finer, if it’s too fine and still happening then buy a cigarillo. I have no idea why this happens with bud. I don’t really even care when it does happen other than the black ash making my clothes dirtier.
"The belief that white ash is a sign of high-quality cannabis is a common misconception that has been circulating for many years. Unfortunately, this belief is not based on any scientific evidence and has led to the exclusion of many excellent strains of cannabis that produce darker-colored ash."
With the flushing once again it’s a yes and no situation so If your using anything that’s not organic and u don’t do anything to get them chemicals out then ofc it’s going to be black ash but just because you flushed it perfectly doesn’t mean it’s gonna be white ash you still need to dry cure and store it properly
So weird, I was just filming my homegrown gorilla grow joint was burning, and I bailed because it wasn’t completely white. I’m gonna try again and grind it up better 🤜🏻🤛🏻
For me coffee is an easy reference, you can have instant, pre ground or go full hog grinding and preparing a shot for 10 mins. Everything can go as deep as long as you enjoy it 😊
It's based on combustion temp. RH, how fine the grind is, how tight it's packed. Is it potassium commercial growers have high levels of at harvest to promote white ash? If your worried about health don't smoke, combustion by default creates a carcinogen. Vape or eat it. Live rosin, infused foods.
After 45 yrs of smoking cannabis I stopped....and started dry herb vape. Now it's not the color of the ash, it's flavour and strength and amount of vapor.
Flushing till the ppm Meter( parts per million ) reads exact same as rain water 💦 is integral ! You must test the run off collected after final flush 🇦🇺
A 1-2 week flush will have next to no effect tbh. Feed at the right EC and dial your plants with experience and a flush just isn’t needed. The inside of plants isn’t a water slide that dumps out waste 😂 the idea itself is just daft when you remember we learnt plant biology in middle school 😂
I use a ball vape or my dynvap. I either don't come across black ash very often or it doesn't matter for vaping cause nothing really stands to me in all the hundreds of different types of flower I've smoked.
papers being the most common reason for me cannot get elements from my local stores and i feel like when i roll with ocb:s the paper is so much thinner that i cannot get it tight and its scary to pack 😅
Actually spot on tbh. In regards to your grower question: flushing is bro science, does fuck all. Not long ago I grew with 100% water for most of the grow (CalMag for only 2 weeks), with pH Down, and my bud was salt/pepper ash. Smoked great, tasted great, but flushing has little to nowt to do with it.
Tobacco burns white, and I wouldn't exactly call that clean, if you want to make sure it is clean, then learn to spot the differences, the fact the ash burns white just means theres elements/chemicals present that burn white, like magnesium and calcium
Every time i smoke a J, preroll or self rolled, with black ash it feels like half of the flower isnt combusting. You can feel it in the inhale and amount of smoke. Ive had some good tasting black ash Js but they never burn well. By the tine you get 2/3s through it it will keep going out.
Ahh opening up the can of worms again Drew well done my man. It does have so many different reasons why the ash can burn dark some of them are nothing to worry about then on the other hand there are some reasons for it burning dark that your tongue should be screaming at you to stop smoking that particular batch of weed without even needing to see the colour of the ash. 🫵😘👍
They put chalk in some rolling papers to make it look like it’s burning white. It’s messed up what they put in some rolling papers you need a good brand of natural papers because it cannot be good smoking papers with chalk in them.
Amount of people that don’t grasp this despite it being common sense that plants don’t work like that. Cracks me up every time. It’s like they think salts/sugars/nuits use the stalks like a water park to escape 😂😂😂
If you’re a grower and want white ash almost every time then make sure you have fed your minerals properly and just water that last week. Stop pumping the plants full of nutrients that aren’t really needed. Get a quality flower finisher that solubilizes your excess phosphorus and nitrogen. In my opinion that’s what’s causing the black ash for most growers. I can’t stand black ash.
yes, moisture also produces darker ash. but that's what I wanted. it simply tastes better than being too dry. for me, that doesn't make any sense here. In my experience, completely white ash is only found in flowers that are too dry
100% agree with you mate, you can get nice weed thats not totally bone dry and you get dark ash. Get the same bud dry it out so it has zero moisture and you get white ash. Also depends on how fine you grind, I like a ruff grind with my bud having a little moisture so never get fully white ash👍🏻

lol white ash is literally bud that wasn’t cured enough/properly sugars and chlorophyll still remaining in the bud. White ash is bud that’s been burnt at the higher temp the bud being properly cured without a lot of moisture results in white ash. try 50/50 on your dry instead of 60/60, strain dependant. the secret had to be let out of the bag for the greater good.
54% is too low imo. You’d lose too many terps and I’d side of a well ventilated 60+. Slower u can dry the better.
ps all commercial growers spray weekly as their ipm schedule, disgusting. steam your substrate and merv 13 your air in and recirc, clean with h2o2 daily. what drew says its fire i wouldnt touch, ever!!! im a consulatnt for the cannabis sector in canada and the US, test your nugs and you will see.
If u add it in the last 3 weeks.it will slow.down and lengthen flowering.... what u chatting m8 who adds calmag at the end the plant don't need it at all
Hyped for this man. Is the Tenco Video coming out
clean burn vs unclean burn. good or bad? Depends on whats burned.
"fats and oils are the vessels in which flavours travel" Malcolm in the middle
that study was done on hemp by Bruce Bugsbee
ive noticed bud that was sprayed with terpenes usually has black ash so moisture content is a huge contributor
If you DHV then this is not really an issue. In fact a bit more moisture can create bigger clouds.
The word recovered is in the big book tons of times. That’s the point.
So weird, I was just filming my homegrown gorilla grow joint was burning, and I bailed because it wasn’t completely white. I’m gonna try again and grind it up better 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Yeah was gonna mention this whilst watching finely ground bud does indeed smoke white usually especially if its packed
A good well rolled joint def helps with the burn. Not too tight or too loose. Dry sticky weed that forms shape when u roll it is best.
ground as fine as possible, packed as tight as possible, with a 9mm+ tip. chefs kiss :)
For me coffee is an easy reference, you can have instant, pre ground or go full hog grinding and preparing a shot for 10 mins. Everything can go as deep as long as you enjoy it 😊
What about the rolling papers ? Some brands add calcium 2 become white ash.

All ima say if “if you know, you know. If you don’t you don’t”
Flushing till the ppm Meter( parts per million ) reads exact same as rain water 💦 is integral ! You must test the run off collected after final flush 🇦🇺
Hey Drew, u think u could come to Breda in the Netherlands? There's alot of shops there
Senescence in plants breakdown sugars it's not the flush but it's why the flush works.
flush is bro science.
@@chrisryan2260 flush is bro science lol
A 1-2 week flush will have next to no effect tbh. Feed at the right EC and dial your plants with experience and a flush just isn’t needed. The inside of plants isn’t a water slide that dumps out waste 😂 the idea itself is just daft when you remember we learnt plant biology in middle school 😂
@@truevanpencil5403 exactly!
I think we should stop saying white ash is the best, its just too much magnesium not been flushed out. A clean grey ash is best 👌
love the car talks
Black ash comes from the grower not flushing the plants properly ! Nothing less nothing more
1mil before the end of the year drew cmonnnn
Hey man what's up like the videos I was just wandering what is the best type of papers to er😊
I use a ball vape or my dynvap. I either don't come across black ash very often or it doesn't matter for vaping cause nothing really stands to me in all the hundreds of different types of flower I've smoked.
I thought you already made a video about this drew
papers being the most common reason for me cannot get elements from my local stores and i feel like when i roll with ocb:s the paper is so much thinner that i cannot get it tight and its scary to pack 😅
People who think it has something to do with it are just settling on a thought, when reality is their nutrients were out of whack.
So does he smoke his medical bud in joints?? Ive recently been prescribed and its on the way but i absolutely cant stand vaping it 😭
Tobacco burns white, and I wouldn't exactly call that clean, if you want to make sure it is clean, then learn to spot the differences, the fact the ash burns white just means theres elements/chemicals present that burn white, like magnesium and calcium
Every time i smoke a J, preroll or self rolled, with black ash it feels like half of the flower isnt combusting. You can feel it in the inhale and amount of smoke. Ive had some good tasting black ash Js but they never burn well. By the tine you get 2/3s through it it will keep going out.
Don’t no why but I have somehow lived 40 years and never managed to roll a black ash j? Can it really happen from a bad roll?
Ahh opening up the can of worms again Drew well done my man. It does have so many different reasons why the ash can burn dark some of them are nothing to worry about then on the other hand there are some reasons for it burning dark that your tongue should be screaming at you to stop smoking that particular batch of weed without even needing to see the colour of the ash. 🫵😘👍
I think if you roll your joints with tabac it also doesnt get wite ash
You should link up with a scientist and make a video like James Hoffman does with coffee :))
Bad drying, curing, excess moisture in the buds for most cases I've seen. Some are flushing issues.
also people now using stuff to make thing burn white that aren't naturally burning white.
They put chalk in some rolling papers to make it look like it’s burning white.
It’s messed up what they put in some rolling papers you need a good brand of natural papers because it cannot be good smoking papers with chalk in them.
The main reason and only reason why you would get dark black ashes is because the weed was not grown properly also was not leached properly
I just smoke what ever my guy brings couldn't tell what's good or bad all I want is to sleep 😂
I use flawless finish from advanced nutrients. 1 week flush only.just did melon chedder full of turps and pure white ash
The amount of minerals absorbed by the plant throughout the entire grow cycle (which can not be resolved by flushing)
Amount of people that don’t grasp this despite it being common sense that plants don’t work like that. Cracks me up every time. It’s like they think salts/sugars/nuits use the stalks like a water park to escape 😂😂😂
Yoooo drew quick question bro do you need referall to clubs in Barcelona or be ok just go over without it any help appreciated g 🙏
Yeah but drew.... Is a zebra white with black stripes or black with white stripes
I smoke all day everyday, starts with my morning cup of tea, finish just before i hit the pillow
Amen to that 💯
Two causes, bad flush, or not completely burning from being wet or drowning in oil.
false false false, its and excess of sugar from a bad drying/curing tec
i have herb at 60% that burn hella white, stop this misinformation
Great video 🔥
yes, moisture also produces darker ash. but that's what I wanted. it simply tastes better than being too dry. for me, that doesn't make any sense here.
@@Thailand.Walks.And.Shorts i have weed at 60% that burn hella white. Ask your plug if they steal the herb and dont have time to cure/dry properly or just dont know how to grow decent shit
@@steventransou445 I use the re hydration packs, the ones that look like little tea bags. I really like the idea of using fruit, what fruit & how do you do it?
@@steventransou445 Good morning from Bangkok, I love the sound of this. I keep my weed in old Kilner Jars so will be easy to try some different fruit peals. Me and the wife had a smoke last night, had some Shiskaberry grown from a Barneys Farm seed. Was the best smoke of the year so far👍🏻
RSO SOS and dr denz has already spoke about it, its to do with the combustion of the weed,if it doesnt burn well its not going to be white ash
I literally just smoked cultivars animal mints 31% 2.1 terps, 1.8 g joint, and it had black ash and burnt absolutely perfect.....
Black ash and shitty burn mostly comes down to the flush and the cure (moisture content) doesnt it?
My homegrown often burns black ash but i know why its still moisture but its good like that for me i only vape and dont care about any ashes
Man if you think black ash is bad , you had to be there for the fibre glass /sand blasted grows 🤣🤣
It's important to flush synthetic nutrients unless it's organic and flushing not so important
never white and black ash again and i started to vape bud and this was the best decision in my ganja career xD
Flush it dont rush it ❤❤❤
Never knew it was a thing until I watched TH-cam videos
Years ago .glass bead sprayed weed .solid Ash even down to the end of joint none fell off...I heard they had a ton buried in Lincoln waiting for mugs to buy lumps as they realised it was bad .
Yo drew , can u come to Arnhem? We have like a few decent shops here and i wanna know what u think about them
which are your favourite stores?
Do your papers matter when it comes to color of ash? I use unbleached and most my rolls are 60 40 white. But I wonder if paper makes a difference.
Thinness matters. Ultra thin or rice papers will have the whitest ash compared to other paper types
Yes especially I did a comparison with a pack of raws I bought from my local store and some I bought online from a place called matchboxbros that have legit raws and the smoke was a bit different and I think tasted different maybe placebo but who knows
I’ve had black ash some just as good as white. Muted terps maybe and slightly off flavour but it smokes fine mate 😂
The only ash I see is a orange tip on 🔥, for those who dank in the dark
Best stubble in the game 😂
Love the vids
Now can anyone tell me why I once got weed that had it's ash turn jet black and rock hard? I'm guessing it was sprayed with something dodgy, it was bizarre never seen or heard of ash doing that since

lol white ash is literally bud that wasn’t cured enough/properly sugars and chlorophyll still remaining in the bud. White ash is bud that’s been burnt at the higher temp the bud being properly cured without a lot of moisture results in white ash. When the grower wants to cut corners and not properly dry their bud out it’s soo disappointing especially when everything else checks out. Ive had beautiful frosty nugs that smelt great and burnt horrible cause the grower rushed the drying process. All that hard work growing this incredible bud down the drain cause he’s impatient and greedy.
I miss old introduction 😊
I must say it’s comical listening to the white ash debate from a non grower🤣
Haven’t you already made this video?
i didnt flush my home grown it has 80% black ash and i never had a smoother smoke to be fair i grew organic so not flushing doesnt have that much of an impact
Flushing for flower quality is bro science. I agree
@@scheppertz Fr. but he can't flush it properly because he is using organics, so his nutrients are in the soil so every time he waters it, it will feed the plant.
