Winston was the best..the everyman trying to make a living a non scientist and yet they were all brothers
So many businesses looking for people these days it's pretty much like this now.

How great is Winston. This guy shows up half way through the film, adds nothing to the over all story, and yet becomes a core member of the Ghostbusters. I love him for that.
He may not have made the equipment, probably not even able to fix it, but definitely added character. He was an ex-marine, he was wise, he was hard-working, and he brought heart and perspective.

I especially love him because my cousin had a micro Ghostbusters collection...Slimer, a ghost (Granny Gross), the Ecto-1, and only Winston with a proton pack XD
Winston was the audience POV. In most other movies the only way to stop the "evil thing" is some "chosen one" or unique power. But not with Ghostbusters. With Ghostbusters all you needed was the right gear and you too can fight evil. Winston proved this "democratization" of fighting the occult, just a guy off the street answering a want ad.
This is probably the main reason why a mostly adult movie like Ghostbusters connected so well with kids. It showed kids, that even though there are monsters in the closet, or in the basement, with the right tools, YOU CAN FIGHT BACK!

Til he realized how fuckin' cool it was to be a Ghostbuster and they saved the world.
Interviewer: "why do you want to work here?"
Me: "i wanted to trade my education, skills, and experience for monetary gains... Oh i mean because it's always been a dream of mine to work in a place like this."
That question is horrible!
Of course it's great to be invested in the job and the company, but come on, everyone's gotta eat! And everyone knows most people just work for the paycheck, so why keep pretending otherwise?

I always loved how one of the original Ghost Busters was just a hired employee.
There’s no hero’s backstory or deep meaningful motivation for Winston, he just needed a job.
That is who most heroes are. Just normal people, that end up in abnormal situations, and perform admirably!
In original Ghostbusters Winston was good normal guy. His replacement in reboot is stereotype black woman

Winston has always been my favorite character. He was the "every man" and someone with perfect comedic timing.

Funny thing about Winston is hes the most qualified to be a Ghostbuster, in the book he was a marine and has the physical fitness and combat experience the other 3 are lacking

@@patrickchoque7720 In the GHOSTBUSTERS game which is canon, Winston had gone back to college and earned a PhD in parapsychology. So, he not just brawn.
What makes Winston so great is he's the most relatable Ghostbuster. The other 3 are doctors, Winston is like your average guy just wanting a job. Walks in, applies and goes along with it. And once he realises it's serious stuff, he's fully invested and interested in it. That's how I feel most people would react if a job opening like that became available
He's the ambulance driver.
Winston one of the best characters that is waaaay underutilized. My favorite scene is when him and Ray are driving and talking about the Bible and Winston points out that the reason why they have been so busy is because the dead have been rising from the grave.
That is a great scene.
Best scene in the entire film in my opinion. Although the aerial NYC shot of the ghosts escaping into the city sky with "I Believe In Magic" playing was incredible.

Winston was written to be on the ground floor & be an intellectual contribution to the whole operation, not just some guy they hired a half hour in. He was "underutilized" because the producers made it that way, but I don't think it would have been any less popular with the original idea.
The role was intended for Eddie Murphy but was reduced when they couldn’t get him
Winston is the perfect guy to round out the team.
Egon is the scientist.
Ray is the engineer.
Pete is the marketing and business specialist.
Winston is the everyman that brings a fresh perspective to things (i.e. the Judgement Day scene).
He’s basically the Michelangelo of Comedy Horror lol.

Winston is also the logical voice of reason, the mechanic (He sees Ecto-1 as his “baby” and is very fond of the car, often working on it) and at times he’s the muscle of the group.
i always thought it was like this:
Egon is the scientist.
Ray is the engineer.
Pete is the marketing and business specialist.
Winston is the field expert since the movie begins with him looking for a job after he has done his marine training
I not only like the fact they hired Winston fast, they took him with ease and developed quickly into the team. He was born to join these guys. And this is the first time I ever saw Peter that serious over the twinky.

Ray was giving cigs to Winston within a half hour of meeting, they're fam
Winston was a good counter balance to the other 3. He was the everyday, blue collar guy amongst the quirky scientists.
Plus they treated him as an equal from the getgo. Just the scene of ray and Winston smoking together is awesome.

@@RichV20 Yeah, the thing about the Ghostbusters is they all felt natural because, when you get down to it, the actors were basically playing themselves.
They all look at one another as men all doing the same job, all with the same goal.
Winston will always be my favorite Ghostbuster
And with "Afterlife" it was shown that after the Ghostbusters ended, Winston went on to start his own business and grew it into a global enterprise and he became very successful. He had a wife, kids, grandkids and being a Ghostbusters taught him to never be afraid and that he indeed did have "the tools and talent" to succeed in life.
And covering the rent for Ray's book store
I hope Sony gives Jason a shot at another one. That little tease at the very end could lead to some interesting story ideas.

I still wonder how much funnier the character might have been if it had been Eddie Murphy? I suspect he wouldn't have accepted being a late-addition to the cast so far into the movie. So maybe he'd have been introduced earlier as part of the team, or as an independent researcher doing his own ghost-chasing first before joining them?
Love how Winston brought the realism. Guy just wanted a pay check but did his job. One of my favorite scenes is there’s the love. How he tells the mayor “These things are real.” Also in ghostbusters 2 he saves Egon and Ray when the pic lab catches on fire and he breaks down the door with a fire extinguisher then uses it. The love for his coworkers is there. “Ray when it asks you if you’re a God?… You say YES!” Love Winston ❤️😂💪🏻
That “when someone asks if you’re a god, you say YES!” is one of the best lines in the entire movie.

I did like how Ghostbusters Afterlife gave Winston a good epilogue as the benefactor of the team.
"What about the Twinkie?" The way that Venkman says that, with a completely straight face as if that's a totally normal concern that anyone would have, has always got me.
They wasted no time hiring Winston. They hired him straightaway right after his interview with Janine. They must've needed the extra help real bad.

That's when a common joe walks into a room with two scientists and doesn't really understand the scientific stuff but at least understands what a Twinkie is. That's why i think that line works so well.
The look on Ernie’s face as Janine is reading off the paranormal list gets me every time.
As soon as Ray said he was hired, you could see a micro second shudder of disbelief from Winston followed by elation at being hired on the spot. Very subtle but it's there.

The people who made Stranger Things should be ashamed of this scene. What was supposed to be a tribute to the Ghostbusters team turned into that childish fight. No wonder Stranger Things started to get really bad after the second season.

Egon is the smartest and most capable.
I like how in the animated series "The Real Ghostbusters" they took time to develop his character further and give him some consistency, making him a real team member and not just a follower.

And he actually invested in lots of stocks in tech companies. He became rich by the time of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and he used his money to preserve the Firehouse and their old equipments.

Correct. In the original draft of Ghostbusters, he was already in the team and he would’ve been slimed instead of Peter; as from the original Sedgwick storyboard. I feel like they somewhat lacked his screen time in the second film since he wasn’t in the courtroom helping the guys take down the Scoleri brothers. So nice to see He has a lot more character development in Afterlife and the Frozen Empire sequel as the official leader of the team.
What’s so beautiful and natural about this scene is a person going up for a regular Schome job, (at least) and going through the what’s, ifs and when’s. His ‘us’ because we’re all thinking ‘what the fuck I get myself in to?’ That first day dealing with a job were not meant to actually know but hey, will take it.

That first scene is pure gold. As a man who at one point in 2007, just needed a job, I know exactly how he was feeling.
Ray showing Winston how the containment system works reminds me a lot of my first day at my local Walmart. I worked the overnight shift. We had a box crusher in the back of the store and one of my jobs was to not only crush boxes for everyone, but also make trash bales for trucks to pick up in the morning. I remember learning for the first time how to work the box crusher which had similar buttons and latches to the ghost containment grid machine. I got so good at using it and making bales that I gained a bit of a reputation in the store and was even chosen to train one of our newest hires. It was a proud moment for me and that little moment with Ray and Winston reminded me a lot of it.
Got to use a box crusher myself during a short stint at a grocery store. I know exactly what you mean. There's a sense of cool in operating big machinery and then there's the sense of awesome at seeing the power those things have.
We had a garbage compactor that we called the hole in the wall that would have definitely given you that vibe
@@samsonguy10k Indeed. Even if you only know to work the machine. It wasn't always perfect for me though. On some nights it would be crowded and sometimes our machine would even malfunction.

Winston matters more than you might think, especially after seeing Afterlife.

And that is how Winston instantly became my favourite...the directors did a great job making him the most relatable of the team. His point of view of the ghostbusters is basically how we view the ghostbusters lmao
What I really love about Winston as well; is that he didn’t have to be smart or have a professional mindset on what the Ghostbusting business was all about; and the three just welcome him with open arms. He is living proof that anybody can be a Ghostbuster; regardless of what background you come from and who you choose to be. 💙🚫👻
"You didn't used to look like this" I think is one of the more underrated lines from this film.
Man, it's amazing how he changed from a guy with a job application to the new head honcho of the new Ghostbusters in Spirits Unleashed. If he was my boss I'd never wanna quit my job

Winston was the PERFECT addition to the team. Ray, the essentric. Egon, the logical. Peter, the wise crack. Winston, the every day man. This is the REAL Ghostbusters.
This section of the movie really captures the idea that even a job as bizarre and interesting as catching ghosts can become exhausting and monotonous.
Once you get used to it, it can get emotionally and physically exhausting when you consider just how often ghost disturbances are in new york ( is their a limit how far away the haunting is taking place to the point where they don't bother unless the payment is really high)

I love that out of all the jobs Winston could have applied for I still giggle that he chose to work with the ghostbusters
When I saw Ghostbusters as an adolescent, I remember making up a backstory for Winston in my mind that he had been an engineer at a nuclear power plant that had been recently shut down, which is why he was looking for a job and thought the ghostbusters with their “unlicensed nuclear accelerators” might need him. As I understand it, the part of Winston was originally written with Eddie Murphy in mind (after Eddie and Dan Ackroyd worked together in Trading Places) but Eddie was committed to Beverly Hills Cop. For the best as I really liked Ernie Hudson in the role.
With all due respect to the other Ghostbusters, Winston brings substance to the team. And if we're talking about the franchise here, they'd be dead without him

I think Winston is a great Ghostbuster on his own merit, but I can't help but think part of the reason he was hired was to act as Peter's buddy. Like Ray and Egon sat down one day and said "look I love Venkman, but if we live with him full time we're gonna smother him in his sleep eventually. We need a mediator."
I never really saw ANY of them as Peters buddy. Peters the guy who any one of them would visibly hate if not for the fact that he balances his being a jerk with him being the jerk who doubletalks everyone into getting shit done.
Immediately pulled into the team, oh hey new guy this is how we do things. Now get into this convo about the world ending. Love Winston

Janine’s just a different kind of relatable.
Winston was definitely our way in to show us how one of us regular people would react. Like us, he didn't understand the science behind it, and he likely didn't expect to see actual ghosts but rather thought of it as a curiosity and a temporary gig until a better job came along. I think that's why he was always the most frightened and the ghosts could sense his fear and fed off of it, and I think that's why some of the ghosts seemed to hone in on him - the subway train moment in the second movie STILL scares me - because the others were almost blasé about it. While my favorite character is probably Dana, I think Winston's my favorite Ghostbuster, tied with the hilarious unit that is Venkman picking on Egon - "STOP THAT!"
Winston. He didn't believe in ghosts, but he still did his job like a pro.

I think what's key here is that they hired him straight away, that tells the viewer that he's just the everyman, someone they needed to just help out and be every audience member watching the film!

I'm still curious if the 2nd film is CANON in the Afterlife universe. If so, What happened to baby Oscar?
It's safe to say that Gozer will have a presence based on the trailer, I would LOVE to see Slimer return!! that would make me happy. But the real tear jerker will be seeing the original cast don the suits and packs for one last time. I Dont wanna get my hopes too high though. You never know. I Definitely Trust that the project is in good hands, and that even in the WORST Case scenario, we will still get a film that respects the legacy, even if it's nothing extra ordinary. For god's sake though...Please Sony DO NOT move this film even further. Give it to us this June

Jason Reitman said that II is indeed canon. He pointed out that Ray was still working at his occult book store.
Yes, we have the Ecto-1 in the new film, rather than the Ecto-1A, but I chalk that up to them being two separate vehicles, and that they got a new car of the same make and model because of brand recognition.
Still, it would've been nice to have someone mention something about the Statue of Liberty walking through the streets of Manhattan.

Watching films from 30+ years ago, I'm always more amazed by how well the footage quality holds up because it was shot on film, but I'm equally amazed by how far sound quality has come. At 0:24 that sound of the car door slamming shut, it lacks so much clarity, not to mention every bit of dialogue having that fuzzy room-tone in the background. People make a big deal about the HD revolution and now we have footage shot in 8k on a mobile device, but to me the advancements in audio are more impressive and as usual, very much underappreciated.

Winston was great. The team could rely on him right away and he became a main character with the original team ever since then.

While Venkman is my favorite Egon being a close second. I have to say Winston was awesome. He was a blunt down to earth guy that despite the other three being doctors was very much their equal.
I love how he just wants to get paid
He was originally equal to his 3 white counterparts, the producers reduced him to a guy who just wanted a job.

@@bayek8377 Winston's character was supposed to be featured from the very start, an intellectual contribution to the ghostbusting efforts. The producers cut down the role bc they thought it would appeal to mainstream audiences. I don't think it would've been any less popular if he was kept in as written originally. Ernie Hudson talks about it in an interview article.

Everyone never wants to go as Winston BUT in reality, Winston and Ray really kept the dream alive in the opening act of Ghostbusters. Winston stayed and hoped for the best. PLUS he pointed out an interesting fact of the dead rising from the graves. Without that they might never have put the pieces together
Kind of wished they had him earlier in the movie as he kind of kept the Ghostbusters grounded but as this was the first movie kind of made sense story wise to have him join after the first 3 got super busy and they needed a fourth.
Did anyone else hear the strange distortion in Ray's voice when he says "Welcome aboard!" ??
All I hear is Dan Akroyd's normal voice.
Ernie Hudson is always playing a cop or some kind of emergency response character and being a Ghostbuster isn’t really any different.
This was during the last hour of the movie where Winston came in. I always liked Ernie Hudson as an actor glad he was cast
The wait will totally be worth it for afterlife. I just gotta know if Bill, Dan and Ernie will show up before or after the climax of the film.
I'm still curious if the 2nd film is CANON in the Afterlife universe. If so, What happened to baby Oscar?
It's safe to say that Gozer will have a presence based on the trailer, I would LOVE to see Slimer return!! that would make me happy. But the real tear jerker will be seeing the original cast don the suits and packs for one last time. I Dont wanna get my hopes too high though. You never know. I Definitely Trust that the project is in good hands, and that even in the WORST Case scenario, we will still get a film that respects the legacy, even if it's nothing extra ordinary. For god's sake though...Please Sony DO NOT move this film even further. Give it to us this June

Ghostbusters The Animated Series touched on so many technical quirks that really brought a fullness to the franchise that this little scene kinda touches on....
I saw an interview with Eddie Murphy regarding been approached regarding this film but he couldn't do it because of commitments to Beverly Hills Cop at the time. Unfortunate but absolute fucking both legend films!!! Hudson did the job great!!

I'll always love Winston- his everyman really fleshed the quartet out, and added so, so much to the films and cartoon- but I can't blame Ernie Hudson for falling in love with the original concept for the character, which was another scientist brought in to bolster the expertise the other guys already had
He did it for a paycheck. He ended up the wealthiest of them all.
If you look at the background when Ray shows Winston how to dump the trap, the wide shot shows Egon in the back messing with a machine on the wall. When it switches to a close up of Ray, not only is Egon gone but the entire machine he's fiddling with on the wall is gone. When it cuts back to the wide shot he is back and the machine on the wall as well :P I'm not criticizing the movie, just something I noticed lol

Love the chemistry between the four. A few seconds and it's all it took to say "Hey. This is a fine unit"
I love Ernie Hudson, but if Eddie Murphy had taken the part of Winston, it would have been the greatest comedy line-up of all time.
Murphy would've been but im glad he hired Hudson instead. Eddie Murphy i great but he doesn't need to be in everything.
As much as I’d like to see that version I think 80’s Eddie would’ve been too young for the part. Winston needs to be the kinda guy that has seen enough of the world to not question the paranormal.
Eddie is even to this day a kinetic force of nature, i think he may have been too energetic and animated. Hudson was the cool dry witted everyman amidst all these very smart quirky geniuses who were less physical and more cerebral. He was the perfect comedy strait man.
Gotta love how Peter plays off on Winston's observation regarding Egon's assessment of the paranormal activity in NYC. All comes down to one of many classic lines.... WHAT ABOUT THE TWINKIE? 🤣🇵🇷🇺🇸📽🦂🗽
