I had a go at making one into an Irish Stout by partial mashing 1.5kg of wheat, 800g barley, and 400g of roast barley. Fermended with novalager because it was what I had on hand. Came out roasty, but too dry/bitter. If I were to make it again, I'd use S-04, and maybe add some crystal.
@littlejohnsbrewing9199 decided to try the 70/20/10 ratio, with the extract & wheat standing in for base malt. Was firmly roasty, but not like you're drinking an ash tray. Swapping some of it for chocolate wouldn't be a bad idea for next time; I still want strong flavours to covet the kit 'twang' though.
Hi mate, love your beer reviews and content. I have just brewed this beer and it's bloody good! I brewed this beer as per the tin method (albeit I added 500 grams of Dex for a bit more ABV). I'd love to see another review of yours with this English bitter.
I struggled to believe that it could be that bad. I'm not likely to revisit. I have Bitter from other makers to do, Black Rock can in the wings waiting.....
I got not bad results by steeping 4oz each of crystal 20 and carapils, adding 1kg light dme 500g dextrose, 28g EKG at flameout, 56g EKG dryhop at 3 days , and used the same Nottingham east.. Cheers 🍻👍😁
Haha. Mate I've been watching so many of your videos and they have really, really helped. There have been some chuckles along the way, but your reaction to this one really gave me a hearty chortle. Thank you. I think it was made funnier by the fact I could see it coming in your eyes from your first taste. Thanks again for making this content. It is so helpful
I keep on going back to Coopers and then regretting it....English Bitter wasnt good.......I've tried other kits and they tend to be better............or perhaps I've just been unlucky.......I bought an out of date John Bull Porter tin......added a few bits to it and it was bloody great.........perhaps it depends upon the style of beer??
I remember moving to Aus 11 years ago and giving home brewing a go after getting a Coopers starter kit for a birthday. Gave up soon afterwards as it was literally the worst beer I'd ever tasted. Glad to know it wasn't just my incompetence! Back now doing AG mashes and loving it. Thanks for all the videos mate, they're all interesting and super helpful.
Had the same problem with there kits 20 plus yrs ago, tried different yeasts ect,, wasn't until i changed brands i realized it wasn't my own fault, Almost gave up brewing in fact,,
I feel the same about the kit brews I did lately..im sure the kits used to be better years ago. I got back into the kits but the twang is horrible it doesnt matter much whet u try to do to improve them. I was quite put off by it. I made a ginger beer kit which turned out ok but the beer kits are horrible. Not even sure I'd class it as beer. I'll just drink it as emergency lock down beer. I think it improves a bit with 3 months aging. But it's discouraging. I remember the kits being better years back before they changed the can design. I'd rather i put the money I done on the kits recently towards a decent 12 pack of IPA from the shop.
That's a shame. I've been enjoying Black Rock and mangrove jacks kits with the supplied yeast. The only minor issue has been low attenuation . Next time I'll probably use us05 and see if that helps. But they taste great all the same. Cheers😎👍

I'd drop the roast barley to 200gm or less..... 400gm is insane.
