    did this fix the dam? I was going to buy that property about a decade ago and I walked away after seeing how the dam was built - interested to know if it actually fixed the problem?

    The dam is leaking on our pond that was constructed in the 60's. The water is rushing around the metal corrugated draw down pipe. A beaver blessed us a few years ago and built a dam around where the pond was leaking. Now there are sticks and trees and leaves in a circle in front of the leak and pipe. Do we need to remove all the debris somehow and then apply the product? Also, do we bypass the draw down pipe and just fill in the space with DamIt and Bentonite?

    I have a neighbor losing about 1/4" of water per day with a couple seep areas on the backside of the dam and a stream of water comparable to a garden hose in the original ditch. The pond is over 2 acres. The dam is 400' long. He's pretty certain it is leaking, in general, along the front slope of the dam near the bottom. It would take a ton of this stuff to fix a pond this size wouldn't it? Is there a better, bulk pricing rate?

      Timothy we normally suggest adding at a rate of 1ltr per 10m2 (107 sq ft) if the water is leaking through the base but if you can locate the likely source of the leak you can apply a smaller amount over that area. We've had many customers with dams over an acre stop leaks by applying a single 15ltr pail but it really depends on a number of factors such as pond shape, wall size, depth, soil type, etc. I'd suggest you measure the area you suspect is causing the leaks and extend a little to cover an area farther away from the dam wall.
      We can supply in bulk for larger products - 200ltr drums or 1000ltr bulk sacks and there is a volume discount but you need handling equipment to unload so often the 15ltr pails are more convenient. If you wanted to send us more details via the contact us page on our website we'd be happy to make a recommendation.

    Can I use damit on a clay dam that has had
    A concrete layer on poured over the clay.
    The concrete has cracked and the dam is
    Leaking.

      Damit works by binding up clay and silt particles and needs to percolate into the soil. It is unlikely to work over bare concrete or a liner but if you have a layer of soil over the top there is a better chance it will work

    Would I have to remove leaves on bottom of pond?

    • @shalexindustries

      Some customers choose to apply over vegetation as the effort to remove is too great. We suggest vegetation is removed to allow the polymer to sink and freely percolate into the soil. If you have heavy vegetation, algae or leaf litter the polymer will attach to that which reduces it’s effectiveness. A small amount is usually fine but if you have a lot covering the pond then best to remove if you can.
      Customers have sent us details of creative ways they have removed vegetation with pool nets and scoops they have designed but probably the easiest way is to drag some shade cloth through the pond

    Does this bother the fish any?

    • @shalexindustries
      @shalexindustries  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel, the polymer is non toxic and typically fish will move away from the application area. You can encourage this by introducing food to one area then applying Damit to an area opposite. We did have a customer in Texas report looses of some feeder minnows in his pond but no larger fish were affected. This was likely a result of a reduction in dissolved oxygen by applying a large amount to a small pond. Some species of fish have higher oxygen demand and where possible removing fish before application is recommended
      If fish are present we suggest you add slowly and in stages. We do not recommend Damit be used for small fish ponds or ornamental ponds or shallow ponds with lower volumes of water. It is not designed for use in lined ponds or concrete ponds - the polymer needs to freely mix with soil
