Hey there! Love ur knowledge in this department! I had a question and was curious of your input. In the documentation for the H1110 it states this, "Drive support The ServeRAID H1110 adapter supports both simple-swap and hot-swap disk drives. The card supports SAS and SATA disk drives. That's a great question. I suspect that that statement means is that the LSI SAS2004 chipset, and the PCIe 2.0 x4 bus isn't enough to allow 4x SSDs to perform at 6Gbps each, which is 24Gbps total. And PCIe 2.0 x4 is about 16Gbps of bandwidth, which is clearly going to limit 24Gbps.

With the SAS-2 controllers I mentioned in this video, you can use both SAS and SATA drives. The onboard SAS-1 controller cannot use SATA greater than 2TB. And if you want to use the onboard SAS-1 with larger than 2TB SAS drives, you probably need to flash it to IT mode firmware. If you convert to SAS-2, you will need the cable I mentioned.
Thanks v much for the video (and for the intro to your amazing son) - followed your advice and got the SAS-2 card, but for some reason it cuts my usable RAM in half, literally. Any idea why? Faulty card maybe? Not able to find anything on this.
I mentioned that problem at this point in the video: th-cam.com/video/3eQIqCQnvuQ/w-d-xo.html It sounds like you have a SAS-2 card with SMBus. you can workaround it by following this video: th-cam.com/video/HBnNaheYmdA/w-d-xo.html
Great video! How would it be to install windows on this machine using one of the SAS controllers you recommend? Is it possible to make it work? I might looking to get one of these, and upgrading to the sas 2 would be nice. By the way, is it possible to mount a sata ssd/hdd outside the caddy system? If you would fill it up with storage space and have a external windows disc or something?
Yes, it should absolutely work to boot off a LSI SAS controller with Windows. If you want mount additional drives, use some disk enclosures that fit into the 5.25" bays. They come in many varieties, including 3.5" and 2.5" formats.

Just installed my kit and noticed that the SATA cords are not long enough to reach the 4 sata cord that I purchased... do you have any recommendations? thank you in advance
Your SATA cables from the 4-bay backplane might be coiled up behind the right side cover panel. You can try to tug at them gently to see if you can pull them out further to give your more length. But if it feels like it's not moving, you might need to remove the right side panel to gain access and see if they are zip tied down or something. Feel free to reach out to me directly - see my about tab or go to artofserver.com.
Why do I need to use sas while there's place on the board for sata , please explain because I got sata drives 4tb each and when connected to sata slots the computer became slow
There are 6x SATA ports (the black and blue) and 8x SAS ports (white and grey). The SAS ports are connected to the onboard 1068E SAS-1 controller. The SATA ports are just SATA ports, but I think they are SATA-II for that generation. SAS drives will not work in SATA ports, but SATA and SAS will both work in SAS ports. Keep in mind, SAS-1 has limitation at 2TB for SATA devices. I don't know anything about your slowness.
Great video. Sorry for the Noob question; why are you running W10 in a VM? It’s been a long time since I’ve used a VM and I thought they where not recommended for Gaming, Audio and Video editing (since you need to talk to real CPU, GPU, and RAM to get the real experience). Am I that outdated :D ?

Great video, I'm selling my custom PC as I'm a bit sick of gaming components everywhere and was thinking on buying something more pro just for having it as a homelab. Is the Z800 a good buy?
Depends on your budget. If you're in the $300-400 USD range, then yes, this Z800 I think is a good deal. If you have a higher budget, I would say also look at the Z820 and Z840.
@@powermi2804 I guess every market is going to be different. Besides HP, Dell also makes a decent workstation. I made some videos about their T7910 here: th-cam.com/play/PL28eVGz5vFQ9VknPREDp6InL30nONhF7P.html
Yes, the 2TB limit is due to the SAS-1 controller onboard, nothing to do with the boot block date. Upgrading the SAS-2, as shown in this video, will remove the 2TB limit.
No, not at all. It's actually pretty quiet. It's not completely silent, as I can hear a low "hum" sound from the fans, but my son sits right behind me in the office room and his Z800 doesn't bother me at all.
@@ArtofServer That is nice. Mine is running loud, and no, its not because the fans are running at high rpm. I tried taking out the rear chassis and memory fans and the noise seems to be "silent". I did try to replace those two with 2 replacements (used ones) I bought from Ebay but the noise is still there. Not sure if it is really the fans or something else. Some say that the noise comes from a bad transistor but not sure.
I'm switching my Hard drive to an SSD 970 Evo 1TB but my Z800 won't boot to the SSD would this cable help to boot to the SSD, the reason why I want an SSD is because my computer is very slow with the Hard drive, can you make a video on how to boot the Z800 with an SSD card instead of HDD it would really help the Z800 community with the same problem thank you so much.
I'm not sure why you can't boot from your SSD? Is that a SATA SSD? My son's Z800 is booting off a Samsung SATA SSD without issue, although using the LSI HBA add-on PCIe card. However, you should be able to boot off most SATA devices. It should be pretty straight forward.
@@ArtofServer is not a SATA SSD it's an internal SSD could that be the problem? there are a lot of videos on youtube trying to fix this problem but a SATA SSD might be the solution. I'm going to try the same configurations that your son's computer has to see if it works, also thanks for answering.
I think I found my problem thanks to th-cam.com/video/i6yrytnuGA8/w-d-xo.html I quote "The only SSD you can't use to boot to is an NVME SSD - they can only be used as a storage medium on most older computers".
are you using a SATA drive right? the Z800 has a SAS-1 controller, and it has a 2TB limit for SATA drives. you need to upgrade to a SAS-2 controller like in this video and you will be able to see the full drive.
I followed this guide but a word of warning, the cables from the hard drive backplane of my Z800 are only long enough to reach the SATA ports on the mainboard, they do not reach the PCIE slots, so I do not know what voodoo magic I need to do to get this to work. I now need to find some SATA cables that are male one end, female the other to bridge the gap between the breakout cable in the video and the backplane.
I think you missed the part in this video where I showed you the cable you need to convert the SATA ports to SFF8087 port. It's also in the video description as I sell it in my store.
I think you missed the part where I said I'm using that cable.but my system's backplane cable is way too short to reach it. I had to buy extension cables

Thanks v much for the video (and for the intro to your amazing son) - followed your advice and got the SAS-2 card, but for some reason it cuts my usable RAM in half, literally. Any idea why? Faulty card maybe? Not able to find anything on this.
I mentioned that problem at this point in the video: th-cam.com/video/3eQIqCQnvuQ/w-d-xo.html

Does the onboard SAS-1 controller have a limit on the drive size it can handle? Does it apply to both SAS and SATA drives or only SATA? thanks
yes, it has a 2TB size limit for SATA drives only. i explain this issue in more detail in this video: th-cam.com/video/u55vIGMzzKw/w-d-xo.html

The motherboard chipset.
Heyo!
I've got a Z640, do you know if they support SAS2 natively? The product pages are real vague and I can't figure out if they even support SAS to begin with without some sort of factory addition.
I don't think the Z640 has a onboard SAS controller like the Z840.
Thank you for the awesome video! Do you know if this card is supported in Windows 10 professional? Thank you!@
Yeah, all the LSI cards I mentioned are supported in Windows.
@@ArtofServerThank you! I just ordered the controller and the cord.. Thank you very much!
Hi. Is there a way to disable the onboard LSI Raid? It's fine without disabling it but my OCD is kicking in lol. Great video. Thanks
Yes, check the system setup menu for an option to disable onboard controller.
Hello
My Z800 takes a long time to boot up. It takes over a minute for the Windows logo to appear.
Can it be shortened in Bios?
That sounds pretty normal for the Z800. They are just very slow during POST.

Glad this helped! Thanks for watching!

We do everything in Linux at my home. The win10 vm is just for those rare occasions when his school wants him to use a windows only app.
Hi, are you using ESXi 6.5?
having some issues with passthrough GPU, no longer able to edit the VM settings after attaching passthru to the VM. anyone had this issue before?

I have Z820, max disk size is up to 3TB. Can I install 4TB HDD using the SAS2 card in your video? Thanks
The Z820 has a LSI SAS2308 onboard SAS controller (usually in IR mode, but can be converted to IT mode). That is a SAS-2 controller, and has no practical drive size limit. Also, the limit would not be at 3TB, it usually 2TiB (2.2TB). Where are you seeing a 3TB limit? See my video on this subject here: th-cam.com/video/u55vIGMzzKw/w-d-xo.html
@@ArtofServer Thanks for quick response and notes. Can you show me how to convert from IR mode to IT mode? Thanks

Question: instead of converting onboard SAS controller to IT mode, can I buy an IT mode ready SAS controller and connect 4TB drive to it. Can you recommend one for Z820? I saw you have some selling on eBay but not sure which one fits for Z820? Thanks
@@ArtofServer Thanks, Any other PC that you recommend that I could take a look? Z820 seems too be expensive here arounf 1000 eur.

2TB limit is for every version of Z800? Even if I have boot block date 11/10/09 ?
Yes, the 2TB limit is due to the SAS-1 controller onboard, nothing to do with the boot block date. Upgrading the SAS-2, as shown in this video, will remove the 2TB limit.
So you're running SATA drives on a SAS2 controller, right? Not SAS drives.
Yes
Is your Z800 fan running loud? I have one of these with 2 X5675, 48Gb RAM, RX 580 but the fan noise level always drives me nut.
Is the Z800 bootable from the 9211-8i?

@@complexkidstv What do you mean by "internal SSD" ?? Like a NVMe PCIe card SSD?
I think I found my problem thanks to th-cam.com/video/i6yrytnuGA8/w-d-xo.html I quote "The only SSD you can't use to boot to is an NVME SSD - they can only be used as a storage medium on most older computers".
how can i make 4tb hdd readable? its say only 1.99tb
are you using a SATA drive right? the Z800 has a SAS-1 controller, and it has a 2TB limit for SATA drives. you need to upgrade to a SAS-2 controller like in this video and you will be able to see the full drive.
@ yes im able yo see it. but it has unlocated volume which is unusable. should i convert it to gpt? i have lsi 9211

LSI MegaRAID 9240-8i.

Ummm…I have a z800 and it’s full of 10tb hard drives. I never added sas2
You have those 10TB drives connected to the onboard LSI SAS1068E controller? Are they SAS drives?
I don't believe the 5,25 bays have enough depth to provide room for a multiple 3,5 inch HDD swap bay.
I've added a 3x3.5" in 2x5.25" trayless rack to a few Z820 before, so I imagine it should be possible in Z800 too. A friend also added a 4x3.5" in 3x5.25" trayless rack in their Z820. It is possible...
@@ArtofServer I'm surprised. It probably depends on which model rack one uses. Especially for the 4 or 5 x 3,5" versions which use the entire 3x5.25" space and usually have a fan behind the backplane. Thanks for the response.
@@guymullie8874 That's a good point! The ones I've used in the past did not have a fan in the back, they were basically no deeper than a standard 5.25" optical drive. I don't remember the exact model, but I usually use ICYDOCK or StarTech branded units.
@@ArtofServer Yes, and probably only the trayless ones will fit. A tray easily adds another centimeter or so. If ventilation holes are present then I have no doubt the server fans would do fine.
