I am off to paint and learn from John Crump again next week. He is a great teacher and all round good guy. Ive been going back over for the last few years learning from him, and anyone who has the time and wants to learn landscape painting ( and the odd pumpkin ) would do well to combine a holiday and painting trip. Money very well spent. …. Great show you have put together Graeme.
Thank you! I paint Plein Air Watercolors and will keep your technique of painting the darkest darks first to set the light.... I paint quickly and will do what you did in about an hour and a half at the most. I always catch myself putting in more details than I should, but feel that a viewer of my work likes to let their eyes wonder around into the painting and find the details over time. We all have different techniques. When I paint in Plein Air Competitions it is always so much fun to see what other artists produce, in the same time, that all of us are allowed to finish our works.
So glad to see more Kiwi art being showcased, especially John Crump. South Island's scenery is utterly fantastic and awe-inducing; any artist who attempts to capture it is humbled.
This Gentlemen is a true , TRUE Master of Light and Shadow... Wonderful Video, Take a look at the wicky and Wild crew Painting "Rim to Rim" through the Grand Canyon with Prolific Painter..it is a Plein Air tour De Force, and Hats off to you Mr. Crump for sharing this Gem with us...... What an Inspiration!!
I watched this video last night on 4ME & John Crump is certainly an outstanding artist! Plus he is very generous with his painting tips! I learned quite a lot from listening to his story. Thanks Graeme for sharing all these videos of the amazing artists that you meet.
I cant afford to take classes but i love to paint, this show has become something like a mentor for me. I dont know about anyone else but not only has Colour in your life given me MANY inspirations and opened my eyes to amazing artists i probably never would have heard of but ive learned a great deal and its only intensified my passion for the arts and exposed me to a world i dont get to see much of here in the states.
Thanks heaps, keep spreading the word, the site and the channels are going all over the world now, so it gives you an idea of the reach that the Artists will have now
I really wish you could have a television show. Your adventures on the road with other artists could be a valuable asset to a network. Please keep making your videos. You are doing an excellent job!
Thanks Benjamin, yes it has been a great journey. I think the networks are wanting people to just sing and cook, cant make it to complicated for the masses, Graeme
hello from Zwitserland. I had never heart of John Crump. I think you are one of the very best in the world ! Your amazing lights ! literally BRILLIANT. your demo is a fantastic boost to try to do the same !Thanks.
I am so indebted to you guys of color in your life and Graeme Stevenson ....i cannot afford workshops or tutorial DVDs....but you guys have allowed me to have a peek at how the masters work...Thank you guys ...greetings from India.
you all probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid forgot my account password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Shepard Madden thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
A superb video and very motivating for a beginner such as myself. One suggestion, if I may: I was disappointed not to see a final still or shot of the completed sheep shearer shed picture and it would help a lot to see the finished work. But thanks for an excellent video!
You should co e out for the Los Angeles plein-air festival Oct 5-9 I'm gonna be painting in that! Should be a blast because we get to paint anything we want around Los Angeles and at the end we will be judge ha ha
David The Good Hi , yes he is amazing. We will have many more great Artists over time, so I hope you enjoy them all, dont forget to tell other folks about us. This only helps us to keep all of this going for everyone out there, hope all is well, Graeme
I found this channel the past week and I think is amazing, Greame keep doing this great work, and of course this artist is amazing, is like magic how the painting is taking shape... Greetings from Chile!!!
Thanks for the great video. Love to watch him paint. Saw him on an Andrew Tischler one. I don't understand the need for background music. No matter how nice it's distracting
I can't say enough about this show. I used to love drawing and painting. As I got older it kinda faded away. This show has sparked my interest back up to doing some watercolor painting, of which I've never done, but Alvaro Castagnet inspires the hell outta me. Great show Mr. Stevenson
Graeme, did you happen to visit with the fabulous artists over at Paint Basket? Dennis and Nolan are my favorite guys from New Zealand. They have some fantastic stuff on their channel and their live classes are about the best I have found anywhere. If you haven't please give 'em a go and see what their about I promise you won't be disappointed. Oh, and I don't work for them or any thing they are not in any way sponsoring me or any thing like that, LOL! I am just a huge and loyal fan for many years of their classes. I believe they are father and son, I could be wrong but that's the impression I got. Anyway, on to watching the show, I just love it by the way. Thanks for sharing! Big Hugs!! Reeah.
+Maria Meade Thanks Maria, we are heading back in November to film more NZ Artists, we are really busy these days with over seas commitments in the U.S. Word has gotten out about how successful this has become, Graeme
Thats too funny Michael. Richard was sitting beside John at his home in Glenorchy when the file came through for John to look at, so it was too rainy to go out and paint so they both watched it together for the first time. Richard was down there to get new material for another show, How about that!
Hi Kay, yes we do have some but they are on our web site and only premium member's can get to see the webinars. I actually talk to gallery directors about the do's and donts of representation
hey Graeme, I love the show and thanks for this feature on John Crump. Could you tell me if he was painting on oil paper or was it normal paper pre-primed with gesso? All the best Carmel
Thomas Bennett , the easel is made by John Crump. They are exceptionally well made. I have one in Australia that I bought from John a few years back. Not cheap, but so well thought out, designed and hand made.
I've looked at lots of videos that mention 'plein air' painting and so far not one person has explained what 'plein air' means. Would it hurt to say, btw that just means open air.
pertaining to a manner or style of painting developed chiefly in France in the mid19th century, characterized by the representation of the luminous effects of natural light and atmosphere as contrasted with the artificial lightand absence of the sense of air or atmosphere associated with paintings produced in the studio. Does that help
Thank you, but I have already found this definition and indeed it was not necessary to cut & paste it here. I was only pointing out that this and many terms are used in art by people taking it for granted that everyone knows the meaning behind them. But maybe some things never change. So, no it doesn't help.
We just finished filming Eric Rhoads in Texas, probably the best known Plein air promoter in the world. I'm sure his explanation will make everyone happy
Yes I watched it and it was excellent, thank you. But, (and I'm sure Shakespeare said something about communication problems with the written word) LOL! - I was meaning that it's like when someone throws a French phrase into the conversation and the other person doesn't speak French. Anyhoo, I think I'll just end by saying I appreciate the videos anyway. (Even though I don't understand Artfrenchspeak. LOL!)
This is not just painting its a peace of the world on a oment. Beautiful

Thank you Muhammad. Thats so nice of you to say. Hope you are well sir and staying safe from this virus, Graeme
John Crump, the best artist on youtube by far. This is how I'd like to paint. Thank you for the demo. This is a REAL artist at work.
Great show. Wish there were one like it in the here in the US.
Wonderful showcase of Australian and New Zealand artists. More countries should show off their artists in this way. Thank-you!
Very inspirational, thank you from Myrtle Creek Oregon.

A great inspiration to start my morning. Well done.

This was so amazing. I am a beginner painter, and now I am so inspired. Thank you for showing us this video.

Graeme Stevenson (Colour in Your Life) that's fantastic! I've been watching for some time now. I hope it goes global! It's a great show.
thank you for your video... what kind of easel are you using
One of my favourites! Since you are in New Zealand will you be making a video with Richard Robinson as well?
Thats too funny Michael. Richard was sitting beside John at his home in Glenorchy when the file came through for John to look at, so it was too rainy to go out and paint so they both watched it together for the first time. Richard was down there to get new material for another show, How about that!
The easel is very interesting. Is that commercially made or ?? Looks very sturdy and easy to set up.
who is the producer or who weolls the shown easel?
is there some video that goes bit more in depth on the whole "gallery busyness" ? Its an aspect of art Ive always been curious to learn more about.
Hi Kay, yes we do have some but they are on our web site and only premium member's can get to see the webinars. I actually talk to gallery directors about the do's and donts of representation
oh I see, thanks for the fast reply by the way and keep up the good work!
brilliance personified. i got the feeling though , that john found graeme mildly annoying lol .
+novemberjam No thats just what John is like with everyone
muito bom
❤
Does anyone know what colors he is using? There are a few shots of his pallet but it is hard to make them out clearly.
+Philip Bohlmann Just drop him an email on his web site Philip. get to know the man, Graeme
Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'll do that. Cheers!
hey Graeme, I love the show and thanks for this feature on John Crump. Could you tell me if he was painting on oil paper or was it normal paper pre-primed with gesso?
All the best

Kevin Speich Thank you! :D

What is the name of the easel?
Thomas Bennett , the easel is made by John Crump. They are exceptionally well made. I have one in Australia that I bought from John a few years back. Not cheap, but so well thought out, designed and hand made.
Look carefully at the UFO in 0:13 minutes flying in the sky with a very high speed.
well spotted!
