This was the title song for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I've played that game so many times. It was definitely the 80s cuz that's when I was a teenager so songs like this are from my era. A Flock of Seagulls (pronounced SEA--GULLS) "I Ran" was part of the '80s "new wave" movement that swept over rock 'n roll music. Released in 1982 and reached the top ten on the American top 40 charts. A Flock of Seagulls' success was short lived. "I Ran" was their only top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Two other songs made the top 10 on the Mainstream Rock chart, "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You)" and "The More You Live, the More You Love," but nobody remembers either one of them. Really, their only other song that got a lot of airplay here in the U. S. was the follow-up to "I Ran," with "Space Age Love Song," which I must admit I rather liked. But it peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100, so it didn't last long and was soon forgotten. By 1984, just two years after "I Ran" made its splash, A Flock of Seagulls was done. Look up "One Hit Wonder" in the dictionary and you just might find a picture of A Flock of Seagulls.

A perfect example of new wave techno pop from that era. But they always stood out because of creative electric guitar riffs that spread their appeal beyond young pop fans. Early new wave was synth dominant, but as time went by, guitar riffs started becoming more and more prominent as songs by Duran Duran, Simple Minds and Romeo Void started taking over rock radio. Interesting times that also gave rise to hair metal.

    • @rbash
      @rbash 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Any mention of Romeo Void gets an automatic thumbs-up! Although I understand why Never Says Never was dance club staple, I thought it subpar for them tbh. Delve deeper, and you start to see what an innovative, amazing band they were. The songwriting, lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation were all unique and, to me, still haunting after all these years. That first album, It's A Condition, is positively hypnotic - a forgotten classic.

They where from my hometown, 😊 1979-1986: Formation and mainstream successEdit
A Flock of Seagulls was started by Mike Score in late 1979 in Liverpool.[6] According to Mike Score, the band's name was taken from the song "Toiler on the Sea" by punk rock band the Stranglers and the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull.[7] The original line-up of the band featured Mike on lead vocals and keyboards, Ali Score on drums, and Frank Maudsley on bass. Guitarist Willie Woo was added, while Mark Edmondson replaced Ali on drums when the Score brothers fell out.[8] Soon afterwards, Edmondson departed to make way for a returning Ali, while teenager Paul Reynolds, a close friend of Edmondson, replaced Woo at the behest of Maudsley, thus creating the band's classic line-up. The band practised above Mike Score's hair salon,[9] and then started playing clubs, eventually signing a recording contract.

Thumbs up for not breaking up the guitar solo alone. From the good old days of MTV. Videos were a relatively cheap way to advertise your song. A lot of groups you may not have ever normally heard of managed to break into the mainstream thanks to cheap videos and MTV. This group was one of them. These guys burned very bright but rather briefly, Guitarist Paul Reynolds was the distinctive sound here but he was very young and didn't handle the pressure of touring and fame very well. He had to leave the band and I believe his loss was also the demise in the popularity of the group. Fortunately, Paul was able to get rested and the group does get back together for gigs though a couple decades later.

Paul freaking Reynolds. Dude was a natural talent (he was only 17 when he joined the band). He was 19 when this song was released (turned 20 later that year).

I loved this song when it first came out, along with Fade to Grey (Visage), Planet Earth (Duran Duran), Kids in America (Kim Wilde), To Cut a Long Story Short (Spandau Ballet) and Don't You Forget About Me (Simple MInds), Video Killed the Radio Star (The Buggles) - classics of the day, just to name a few - a very small few. Still love it - and all those brilliant songs to this day.

( THE BEST - America~Rondo [LIVE '90] ) - I have just now found out that several of the best ever musicians would show up at a small Los Angeles venue and jam. They then decided to form a group - The Best were an English-American supergroup originally formed in London in 1990, featuring Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer) on keyboards, John Entwistle (of the Who) on bass and vocals, Joe Walsh (Eagles, James Gang, and solo fame) on guitar and vocals, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers) on guitar, and Simon Phillips (the Jack Bruce band, 801, the Jeff Beck Group; later of Toto) on drums.

    Cars by Gary Newman
    Obsession by Animotion
    Whip It by DEVO
She Blinded Me with Science by Thomas Dolby

The first time I saw this video,
I was in 6th grade and it was the eighties.
That night a friend from the neighborhood was sleeping over.
So, after the folks were soundly asleep, we raided my mothers make up drawer.
We did ourselves up punk/new wave style (even the hair).
Doing our best to emulate the scary girls in the video.
We then each put on a black plastic "Hefty" bag, with holes to fit our arms and heads through, some black leggings. Then added a colorful belt, and voila!
We then took the dog for a walk around the block, just hoping someone would notice how cool we were.
... and this was only the tip of the big weird iceberg, that was my childhood.

This song helped launch MTV. They had just recorded it one day and I believe MTV was going live the next day but only had a couple of videos to play. Their producer or some record company guy liked the song and walked it over to MTV. And I believe MTV or someone else gave them a couple of hundred dollars to buy some clothes, they shot this video in like two hours and ran the tape over to MTV> Since MTV really had nothing to play just a mission and VJ's to fill air time they played the daylights out of this song, I believe putting it on the air every hour for weeks or months. And it became almost an anthem for the 1980's . ITs a fun story when I heard it. I saw this band perhaps two or three times in the last two years. I was surprised that while this song was an epic fan favorite the song that really brought the house down was Space Age Love Story. In fact at Sea World they played the song twice and the second time they played it the experience was special. The energy and the love. The lead singer is now bald which doesn't matter. He seems like a cool guy. This band is out of Liverpool. I look forward to seeing them again when they are in town.
