The song is about the lead singer and bassist's grandmother, who passed away during their early tour days. She supported the band and paid for their first tour van that they drove around.
She was much more than that to them. She used to play piano & paint. So I wonder where Gerard got his interest in music & drawing comic book art? And she really encouraged their artistic dreams...like you said, providing them with the tour van. I love the podcast the Way Bros did with Kevin Smith. It's a long 2 parter, the 1st part is a LOT of their upbringing & rise to stardom. The 2nd part is a lot of breaking down The Black Parade song & recording process. As a musician I'm a freakin geek for that type of shit. Not only the recording process but also the artist's upbringing. And it's almost always the case...there was a family member who could play music who started the musical journey for the artist.
Important to add that he wrote it for her because he hated himself because the band was so busy on tour that he didn't spend much time with her in her final year. He felt guilty and put it in song as a way to say goodbye.
My Chemical Reaction should be a new weekly thing you do! I swear this band and video alone started a whole era of emo hot topic fashion. But their aesthetic is so good. It’s because Gerard is an artist and the visual part was so important to him as well as the musical part
The lyrics of this song describe Gerard Way's (the lead vocalist) feelings for his late grandmother, Elena Lee Rush (friends called her 'Helen', and because of this, Gerard always thought of her as "Helena"). NME declared that the song was one of the "20 Greatest Goth Tracks". The song was also used in the closing credits of the 2005 horror film "House of Wax".
If you like breakdowns you should check out their new single, it's sick as hell. This band was a significant part of my late adolescence, an amazing marriage of punk songwriting and goth aesthetics. The opening to the Black Parade is iconic, but they have an amazing back catalogue
I didn’t go to many concerts as a teenager because I was never really interested in them but I made sure I went to My Chemical Romance concert they are really good
@@poodook I haven't seen The Office so I haven't watched that but I've watched most of there movie reactions, Star Wars reactions, and some of there music reactions.
I’ll never forget seeing this video on MTV when i was a kid and this had just came out. It blew our minds and I’ve been obsessed for close to 20 years now lol if you get the chance to see them do it they are great live I saw them last year and they were just as good as when I saw them in 08.
i remember the first time i watched the helena music video i felt like i was ascended to heaven. i swear that was a life changing moment. it changed my whole personality
This was the first MCR song I heard and I loved it immediately! I was in my early 30s, so not an angsty teen lol and I didn't dress emo or anything. I just loved their music.
I was such an angsty teenager but I was raised in a family and environment where you don’t show your emotions because people saw that as a sign of weakness (my parents went through some shit that made them like that) and I am a Cancer/a July baby, my emotions flow from within at the slightest breeze so I went through some intense emotions as the black sheep of the family and pop punk/emo music really seemed to understand me. I don’t listen to it much anymore but My Chemical Romance was always always the one, their music heals me to this day. They’ll never know how much they mean to me but I do and that’s enough
Also, their guitarist Frank Lero is part of a super group called L.S. Dunes. They're made up of some legendary musicians like Anthony Green from Circa Survive and The Sound of Animals Fighting.
I was never an emo but I always liked MCR. Funnily enough, I only know 1 person who is truly into MCR like I am and she's Indian (she grew up there too) :D
MCR started getting popular right as I was going into my teen years. They were my first band that I was aware of and loved! Gerard Way might have been what kicked off my preference for brunettes(dyed or not)! 🥰 And my God, did I love their songs!
“Look how over-the-top dramatic they are!” Well, it’s a funeral. If anything it’s good acting. Some people have more emotional depth than others. That was the goal, to display emotion.
Reason why the video was "dramatic" was due to a personal passing of Elena Rush (Nickname: Helena), grandmother of both of Gerard Way (Lead vocalist) and Mikey Way (Bassist). Gerard calls this song an “angry open letter to [himself].” He expresses the hatred he felt for himself after her death. So yes, it is indeed "Dramatic" for them to make this video.
Those were the days, it was 17 years ago when I heard this in High School. ALSO when are we getting reaction to IT Chapter 2. Its been almost 2 years already
MCR are the best Band on earth, I swear. Artists like Billie Eilish (mainly through her brother), Post Malone and Lil Peep all wäre direcrly inspired by MCR, all of those said that they were. Also they're still soooo good live! They're all in their early 40's and have still the energy of 20 year olds on stage! They sound soo good and the charisma of everyone in this band is umbelievable. I wish you're gonna react to more MCR, bc i'd say that all of their songs are god tier.
A phase hahahahaha. Also this song is dedicated to the lead singer and his brother's (bassist) grandmother who passed away. She was their biggest supporter and financially helped them before they were signed. MCR is heavily misunderstood band, actual creative geniuses but theyre always categoriesed as a angsty emo band
Recent pop punk song that I would recommend is Ruin my Life by Simple Plan ft. Deryck Whibley (lead singer of Sum 41). Really good pop punk song that feels like the 2000s era.
I know what this song is about by the person that wrote the song. But when I listen to this song I'd like to 1. Sing it to my MIL or 2. Have a flash dance at my funeral like in 40 years. Maybe funeral just the ballet but to Queen. This is real.
Would love to see you guys do more rock and metal, or just band music in general... Electric Callboy - Hurrikan, Jinjer - Vortex, Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (live at red rocks), Polyphia - ABC, so many others
Enter Shakari - Sorry you're not a winner. that song went so hard and when it came on if you didn't get the synchronized clap done. everyone just looked at you. and the breakdown was so tasty
I remember seeing this music video not too long before my first funeral and being very confused why everybody didn’t have a black umbrella with jet black clothes
So idk what, if any specific reasons the other pop punk/emo bands really formed (I'm pretty sure just normal reasons) but MCR formed as a reaction to 9/11 and specifically Gerard's (lead singer) feelings about it and it's immediate aftermath
Their last album pre break up wasn't great IMHO but before that they were probably the best band in that emo rock category. Most of their songs have a different feeling style wise, two or three changes in sound in one song. Famous Last Words and Vampires Will Never Hurt You being personal favorites...
Marketa is the only one with the proper vibes to this song. And my god, MCR is sooooooo fucking good. The songwriting, the lyrics, the vocal stylings, the guyliner....I seriously wanna bring back the guyliner makeup look.
maybe you could do some radiohead reactions? they have some awesome music videos, i would recommend just, karma police, burn the witch and paranoid android
This was definitely an era of the emo-pop-punk??? Bands with MCR, Fall Out Boy, The Used, PANIC!, Paramore… all of it had a chokehold On me in highschool…
About time ya'll start reacting to good music & interesting music videos. And honestly, ya'll should go down the rabbit hole of hilariously bad metal music videos....cause my god those early-mid 80's metal music videos can be fucking out there. You've got Ronnie James Dio dressed as like a Viking taking on some crazy creature. You've got Iron Maiden making a joke of the Top of the Pops type music programs. There's quite a bit of humor in some Judas Priest videos. It's a goldmine of content that ya'll can Beavis & Butthead.
The song is about the lead singer and bassist's grandmother, who passed away during their early tour days. She supported the band and paid for their first tour van that they drove around.
We need to upvote this comment
Another fun fact: The dance the woman does towards the end, is one of the grandmother's routines she did when she was a dancer.
She was much more than that to them. She used to play piano & paint. So I wonder where Gerard got his interest in music & drawing comic book art? And she really encouraged their artistic dreams...like you said, providing them with the tour van.

Nearly twenty years on and this song still rocks my world.
This song and band DEFINED my teenage years, holy fuck.

SO LONG AND GOOD NIGHT!!
SO LONG AND GOOD NI-IGHT!

Had no idea this guy wrote The Umbrella Academy. I’m thoroughly impressed
Stan Lee literally told him not to quit his day job when he showed him Umbrella Academy 😅
he also did some animation design in Spider-Verse Miles Morales.
I only knew about Doom Patrol myself but I only learned it a few months ago.
He also created Penni Parker, the Spider-woman that uses a robot mech.
