Let me say it two ways: 1.) This is not a cutting contest, this is an encounter between two artists mutually respecting each other, and attempting (and succeeding!) at creating a spontaneous masterpiece for the joy of, and appreciation by, the rest of us; 2.) For pianists, everywhere: Zeus meets Odin.
You can tell Oscar is in truly enjoying the moment, taking in those deep breaths, realizing the Count is across from him and they are killing it softly. You can teach musicians notes, chords, scales, but you can't teach them how to to swing it, and Basie was/is the master.
Basie once said it's not the notes you play - it's the ones you leave out. This piece is a lot harder than it looks. There is a conversation going on through out the tune as Basie and Oscar are feeding each other notes and obviously having some fun at the same time. Really enjoyable!
Oscar was a true ambassador of music. His beautiful spirit shines so very brightly, inside and out. It was my pleasure to see him perform and I'll never forget it as long as I live.
I'm a big Basie fan, saw him a ton of times live, have a few (all?) of the Oscar/Count albums and the way they compliment each other it is sometimes tough to realize who is playing what.
My heart Jumps with AMAZING JOY when I see and hear these two Music Greats perform. Growing up with their music was a treat. I now have some of my dad's albums of both Basie and Oscar and many Jazz greats. There will NEVER be anyone like them again EVER . . . . .Trust That!
They both really do sit well - loose and fluid with no wasted body energy; alert but not rigid, clear but not dogmatic. They also both play with exactly the hand position that every classical piano teacher I know teaches. Good inspiration doesn't automatically mean good output -- the lessons, the practicing, the teaching is all about opening the channel from inspiration to sound. The road doesn't pave itself.
I have this on video, it makes me so full of emotion and takes me back to those days when my dad used to play me records and videos of both Oscar and Count playing. True genius's, taken from us to soon. Rest in peace my good men. Stephen
AND he was very kind. When I told him that im a pianoplayer, he smiled to me and replied: "Oh, that´s great, the world needs more pianists". Amazing pianist AND amazing personality.
SibMajor said it. *This* is music. How is it that America's original musical art form is so forgotten these days by so many people? It was my Dad who turned me on to this video (he knew and was friends with both musicians and is one himself), and upon hearing it, I thought, "what a nice, lovely blues...!" Yes. *This* is music. This needs to be played more on mainstream radio.
@@ADK53 I know. I'm going to steal that. When the moment is right, I'm going to say to some friends, "Yeah, that was cooler than the other side of the pillow." I remember those days, before a/c.
I've loved Oscar Peterson since I first saw him on TV with the amazing Nils-Henning Orsted-Pedersen (R.I.P.) - heard here...and this is So Cool! - OP and CB together. These guys can play Anything, Anytime,Anywhere. The Basie Orchestra is still going as far as I know. Albeit without the Count,R.I.P.
It flows so well, and when you actually see their fingers, you realise how well in tune they are. One plays something, the other finishes it off. PERFECT!
I happened to be at a special midnight concert of the Basie Orchestre at Ronnie Scott's Club and Oscar was in the front row - he watched Count like a hawk throughout the two hour concert - especially when Count played a solo. Now the brag: I got Oscar's autograph!!!
R.I.P Oscar P. Glad to have met you in real life. It was one of the greatest moments of my life to shake your hand and talk to you. Im sure you are jammin´ it up with the other jazz-cats in jam-session-heaven!
I was so lucky to have seen Oscar preform live with Ella and Count Basie in 1977, what a show! Oscar, one of the greatest on the piano. Man, so sad that we lost another great jazz legend.
At first I'm like, man, this is an unattainable height-I'll never be where they are. Then I just listen and it doesn't matter-such true pleasure. They were masters.
Ithink we should not forget that this piece of art was made by 4 musicians ,and i can not imagine the pressure on bassist&grummer shoulders ... With Basie&Peterson on stage ... no mistakes were allowed in this kind of music moment :)
This is the reason why i like people like Elton John, Leon Russell,Billy Joel and Bruce Hornsby and been playing piano all my life,It comes from these godfather legends such as oscar and count.
Sweet like honey, smooth like molasses, warm like a smoldering hearth.Cool like a summer waterfall, this is Manny Malden junior with the odds and ends of jazz and blues here on your radio dial. Those were the days :-)
The legendary "Count" with the superb Canadian Pianist and the Great Dane, the late Niels Perdesen. He died too early. Such elegance and effortless style🌺💖🌹👌🙏😘
Oscar Peterson was not just an exceptional player but he was also a great entertainer. His technique was utterly unflawed but a laugh or a smile was always present in his playing and you couldn't help but enjoy OP when he seemed to be having so much fun himself. Thank you, Oscar, for so much great music. Thank you so very much!!
I never realized it was possible to say so much with so few notes. We have lost both of these guys and when I listen to something like this I always cry, but the tears age good tears!!!!!!!
This is blues/jazz at it's best! Oscar and Count are able to play the typical blues progression, I IV V, and then slowly build up the improvisation as time goes by. This kind of jazz and collaboration are rare in these days!
Jazz and Blues have been created in America. However, we can find almost every elements of jazz in European and African music like the walking bass, the swing feel, the improvisation the chords and the approach of the chords. The spirit comes directly from the French quarter in New Orleans. Me, I believe that jazz is a world music created in America by people from all around the world leaving in America.
What I love about this interpretation is, unlike most piano duos, Basie and Peterson respect each other's musical space and leave room in the piece. They don't clash. They don't fight for supremecy. They work together perfectly in harmony. If you have seen the show from which that clip originates, you may find it warming to see how similar their personalities are to how they play. Peterson is intelligent and full of ideas yet Basie says very little, but makes it Count...
Let me say it two ways:
1.) This is not a cutting contest, this is an encounter between two artists mutually respecting each other, and attempting (and succeeding!) at creating a spontaneous masterpiece for the joy of, and appreciation by, the rest of us;

Yes to all of the above. Jazz Man, from Kendal😊
Lords of music.

it may be blues but these guys swing hard!
Who doesn't like of jazz and blues doesn't understand a lot of music!
Don't understand a lot of LIFE!
I feel sorry for them because they are missing out on some of the greatest pleasures of life.

The likes of these two GIANTS will never be seen nor heard again.
Brilliant piece of music played by two of our greatest Jazz pianists...Beautiful.
A magical moment when two legends just take it easy and let it flow! Bravo...
Both of them are now Jammin' on Jazz Heaven... RIP Oscar!! You're STILL the Greatest!!!! And Count Basie, you're just as good!

With such great pianists you almost forget the awesome job the rythm section is doing. Pederson really grooved with Oscar.
Pederson holds these two masters together. He is awesome.

Like someone said on another Peterson vid I just watched, how can there be 20 people in the world who dislike this? Guys, are you deaf?
Some people will just dislike the video for the purpose of triggering fans
People press the dislike button by accident when scrolling on their phones. Happens to me from time to time
One of the greatest ever. I'm fortunate to have his videos with Ella, Count Basie and others. A great loss, very sad.

Two MASTERS' Masterpiece. THANKS GENIUSES.
I remember seeing Count and Coltrane playing duo in 1983. One of the best nights of my life. I never heard John sound so good
That's an unexpected collaboration!
Very beautiful music.
They cant help but to smile and be happy playing there with each other. amazing.
This has got to be the tastiest groove ever...man, to hold it back like that and keep it moving forward at the same time...true masters at their form.
This is super, the best of every thing, I play it every evening before I go to bed, its great, Dinkie, 78 years old from Holland.
