I probably never would have heard this if Rick Beato hadn't posted Oscar as being The Greatest Solo of All Time. They are amazing and this gives the next generation something to shoot for.
Check out Art Tatum as well. Earlier in history, mind-blowing technique. Obviously a great influencer of Oscar Peterson's style. Not taking anything away from Oscar Peterson because he's one of my heroes. Actually they both are.
You can never answer the question who is/was the best piano player. This moment comes very close to solving that question. The beauty is that an answer is not required. Just listen and enjoy!
Not being a musician, I will never understand how a human mind can think fast enough what to play when what you're playing is pouring out of you at that pace. There's something profoundly different about the mind of a musician like Oscar Peterson, and about a LOT of musicians who can somehow just open a portal from their mind and the music just flows out of them like that, nothing written or practiced, just stream of consciousness.
People were so used to these geniuses that they don't even stand up nor scream. I'm a fan of good music, and I knew Peterson by name and watched a few things, but this is the first time I see his full potential. This man was an immensiley talented superhuman. Not only the speed, the accuracy, the independency of each hand, the complexity of combinations... I had tears and almost cry. Every kid in the world should see this. 😰
I was not a big fan of Jazz, however this has given a ton of respect for the genre. Rick Beato sent a bunch of people to this because he said it was probably the best solo ever recorded. I don't know if he's right, but it's the best one I have ever heard.
I was raised pressured into listening to jazz, my dad's music. I didn't like it. I still really can't understand it but I'm beginning to appreciate it more and more. The rocket science of music.
the best Absolutely fantastic!!! there is a live album from this period called 'The Trio' on Pablo label with this track on it called Blues Etude' has Joe pass on guitar... i was about 14 when i bought it and it blew me away ... why has someone disliked this ?? Saw OP's last gig at RAH in London ..a great but sad day as it was obvious he wouldn't be with us for too long.
I love this!!!!! Thus I do here by declare that by whatever means necessary, I will learn this! (of course giving myself all the time need be for such a grand endeavor) I’ll check back in here if I do complete said task, but for now it seems hopeful beginning!
I love it when I hear something I've never heard before, that just blows my mind because it's so cool, and it may or may not have even been recorded in my lifetime.. it's the greatest feeling because it reminds me again of the infinite power and grace of great music, and how it can come from any place in time and space, and just reveal something to your soul that you've never experienced before. Wow, that was really amazing, thank you Oscar, and Rick B.
saw this as a kid watching bbc telly its was on late but my parents let we watch it. and now its even more mindblowing eh! especially in light of the rubbish we have today
Man Oscar can play! I hope I got that right. He is very good. I was surprised to see Barney just sitting and listening. Why wouldn't he? It's hard to keep up with fire! Super.
Did this trio ever record an album? Is this concert available on DVD? I loved Herb Ellis in the drummer less trios with Ray Brown although I think Barney Kessel was a better soloist. I'd never heard Barney, NHOP and Oscar before. Amazing sound.
Suddenly Oscar Peterson is trending on TH-cam. This was shown on Britain's Channel 4 when television was worth watching. When did you last see Ornette Coleman on the "box"? My answer is 1970 on Australia's ABC TV, of course that doesn't include Ken Burn's Jazz in 2000.
This isn’t as amazing as it seems….NBD. Watch closely you can see him manipulating a sub-space warp bubble making it easy to surpass the speed of light.
All I can say is thank goodness this was recorded.
The piano is so awesome even the BBC logo can't stay still.
PS. I felt so sorry for the guitar player having to follow that.

@@Frustratedartist2 I was just being complimentary about Oscar in a jovial way. Don't take it so seriously.
Boiled Beyond Ceiling
It’s incredible how much he’s sweating out of that awesome piano solo.
Rick Beato sent me here and now my face has melted onto the floor!!!
Same haha
@@cloudbloom X3 , hahahah
My jaw dropped during Rick's video - I needed to come hear the full thing.
Also came from Rick's video. Educational though his reaction videos are, it kinda breaks the flow a bit.
the same. I can't stop watching
This one must be the best piano improvisation in history, ever.
It was just a Tuesday!
There is always someone better fortunately for us humans.
Damn you Rick Beato. Now my mind is blown!

Barney Kessel!!!🥇🏆
The musicians that other musicians go to listen to. Awesome stuff

I pretty much watch this at least once per week.
Always liked OP and NHO playing together. Saw BK live a couple of years after this and was blown away. Three awesome talants.
Saw Oscar and Ella Fitzgerald live about 3 yrs after this. He was unbelievable!
THIS IS SHREDDING!!!
Rick Beato brought me here in 2021! Thanks, Rick (and thanks Oscar, Barney, and Neils).🙏🌞🇬🇧🙏
yup, me too
Oscar is a one of a kind master. Nobody before or since comes close.
That boogie boogie is SICK
How do you explain so massive talent like this? We'll never see this again!
The greatest!!!!! Just listen to his left hand!!! And then there's the dexterity of his right. Keeper of the Tatum tradition!!!

Barneys nice idea....pedal the fifth while moving the diminished chord down chromatically. I've heard Jimmy Smith use that quite a bit in a blues too.
