If anyone is wondering where the Polar Express’ other whistle originated? Well, it actually was the SP 6 chime! Here is the proof: th-cam.com/video/zRKAwoT9nmc/w-d-xo.html I cannot fully guarantee that it just came from a model train, someone had to record it from somewhere, but from what locomotive? If not, then was it a replica? I’m still not sure. However, at least it’s not the Santa Fe 6 chime, that’s for sure.
Fast Frieght, I have a question. Could I use your custom 6 inch 3 chine (CRR 311's whistle) for a custom model I'll be making sometime in the near future?
Sierra Railway #3, The Movie Star basically did the Polar Express’ singing voice, and Pere Marquette 1225 basically modeled for and co-voiced the Polar Express.
That is such a pleasant and accurate description! I can just imagine Sierra 3 in a recording studio, with a headset on her smoke box, blowing her whistle and after every take saying “Was that okay?”
I just love how both polar express and back to the future part III has the line “I wanted to do that all my life” line when they both have the same whistle
The animators were serious back to the future fans. There’s references to the BTTF trilogy throughout the entire film. And it’s not just the flux capacitor in the engine cab Lol
Yeah, both movies were directed by Robert Zemeckis. That’s why you can see the Flux capacitor and both Doc and the Hero boy say “I’ve wanted to do that my whole life”. But actually I’m BTTF3, Doc says “I’ve wanted to do that all of my life” it’s different but still retains the nod. It’s sad that the Sierra Railways #3 whistle is dying now. It’s not like it was in the early 2000s. Anyway, I just commented to confirm
in back to the future and the polar express they both say the same line, this is because the same person who directed back to the future also directed the polar express, there was also a flux capacitor in the cab of the polar express

That clip at the end was my personal favorite. The cheerful, exciting tone that this classic 5 chime whistle has to it can’t be mistaken for anything else.
In case you are wondering what happened at 0:58, the whistle went for rebuilding due to bad modification inside the whistle's washer causing the steam to leak out instead of going into the chamber.
Well, the whistle had been blowing for quite some time, and it finally started to show its age. Thankfully it has been restored and the old lady has her voice back!
The whistle in the video was the same one for years and still is but in the Back to the Future parts, that was around the time that the railway noticed that the whistle needed repairs and was years later rebuilt into the original Lima 5 sound from when it was first built.
I think this steam locomotive's whistle looks and sounds better on The Polar Express. It's actually my #1 favorite movie The Polar Express no joke it really is the BEST out of all movies I've watched and will never change
The Sierra 3 is a beautiful & locomotive. I hope this locomotive lasts for a long time for future generation train lovers and hopefully the no.3 will star in some more movies especially westerns. As a cowboy and train lover, this locomotive will be perfect for a future western movie because back in the old west, we had locomotives with the 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 wheel arrangement. I'm not sure about a locomotive with the 4-4-0 for a good western film, but the B&O no. 25 would fit perfectly. Used to be the oldest standard gauge locomotive running, but now it's a static display. NEVER retire the no.3 for static display unless if something horrible happens to it such as a catastrophic boiler explosion or something. The no.3 is a great movie piece and should be used in some future western movies.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end. As with B&O No 25, and our own L&M 'Lion', a day will come when her owners have to make a choice; keep her as she is, a historic artefact in her own right but retire her to static display, or rebuild her with a new boiler, and lose her historicity. Locomotive boilers don't last for ever - this is why other movie legends, such as Genoa, Reno, Inyo, Dayton, J W Bowker and their sisters either run at greatly reduced pressure, or sit in a museum. Thank heaven we have them on film.
@@JohnDavies-cn3ro Well, that's true. There does come a time where locomotives need new boilers and stuff and these days having a new boiler constructed can be really costly especially for a locomotive that was built in the 1800s. 1800 era locomotives are more costly than a locomotive from the 1900s to the 1920s. And with Gettysburg 1278, that won't run under steam again either because of the backdraft boiler explosion back in 1995 plus 1278 was poorly maintained as well and ran hard water without a descaler and softener. Hard water causes corrosion and that is bad for steam engines. Oh well, we only can do so much with a piece of history and like you said there comes a time to retire a steamer from operation and turn it to a static display.

I swear there used to be an article somewhere about recording the polar express whistle, either from the sound recordist or someone from the railroad. I wish I could still find it. They said when they went down, there were a few whistles to try out. I think they said instead of multiple engines, they would physically swap the whistles, and that it was actually 28 wearing the whistle when the recordings took places. I think number 3 was in pieces for rebuild at the time, which kinda supports this memory.

@Man With 9000 IQ Site a credible source, please. I have been a volunteer at Railtown 1897 for almost a decade and not once has anyone been able to prove your statement.
@Man With 9000 IQ It's entirely possible that it IS a Lima 5-Chime, but that doesn't mean it was from the 3. There are a handful of other original Lima 5's out there that I know of. Here's the thing about the 3's whistle, the reason it has been on the engine for so long is because it has a valve arm that only fits that locomotive, which is also why I know that the sound of the whistle in the film is not from the 3. The locomotive stopped running in 1996, and sound technicians for the Polar Express made their recordings in 2003-04, more than six years before the number 3 was under steam again. Only the people who worked on the film could tell you where those recordings were made, but I can tell you that they didn't come from the 3. Here's another thing, when we had Chris Rizzoli repair the whistle this year, he told us that the Lima whistles were closely based on the design of Nathan whistles, the only difference being the integral valve and bowl patent that Lima had. So the whistle used in the film could just as well come from a Nathan 5-Chime, and there are a lot more of those around than there are Lima 5-Chimes. Again, please site your sources, as I did for you. Don't just believe what you hear through the grapevine.
in regards to the "other whistle" (which you pointed out was from GCR 4960) apparently, some locomotives can have more then one whistle at a time, Pere Marquette actually is an example as she carried around NW611's whistle for a while back in 2007.

What kind of whistle is that from petticoat junction
I don’t know, but it sounds like a 3 chime whistle
Sierra 3's Petticoat Junction whistle isn't a stock effect but it's a 3 Chime. Rizzoli Locomotive Works (up3368) has a video showing it.
That is true.
Seen all of them apart from The Virginian.
My two favorite.
Lima 5 inch shay division 5 chime.
Petticoat Junction Whistle???
The Petticoat Junction is actually a 3 chime whistle.
Sounds very high pitched for a 3 chime. What company?
Grand Canyon Railway 29
Okay, First, Grand Canyon Railway #29 wasn’t featured on the show. Second, I don’t know who made the whistle, but I’m going to have to guess that it was either custom built, or factory built (Baldwin, Lunkenheimer, Crosby, etc.) Yet I also know that it still exists: th-cam.com/video/xFMoY9Fk6Ow/w-d-xo.html
That is the locomotive I was talking about. It says 29 on the side.
Aww, no apple dumping gang 2?
