How do you measure the chimney flu vs the size of the chamber, to ensure that the fireplace does not smoke?

Because a flu of these type are rounded at the corners the only way to measure it is to pull from the outside flat side at the middle to figure out the size of it.

Most flu's need atleast 3" from the top of flu to where the lid sits and atleast 4" of lid past the edge of the flu.

All you have to do is use a tape measure to figure out how far it is from the side of the flu to the furthest point on the edge of the chimney. Then minus 1" on all sides layout the cap and add a 3" collar to it then legs and the top cover with screen and boom you have a start to finish cap of about 3 hours time! @stephenallen9786 you seem to know your stuff so I’m curious for old chimney like mine that is not lined I assume a top mounted cover is best, couldn’t I just measure the width and length of the chimney in the basement and buy a cap that sits on top and anchor it to the top of the brick? Mine measures 16x20 so the opening is likely 9x13 because the bricks lay flat all around and would account for 3.5” each side so if I deduct 7” from length and 7” from width that would make my chimney top opening 9x13. If I buy a flat mounted cap it needs to be 9x13 minimum up to less than 16x20 maximum to be able to be anchored to the top right? My house is 3 stories high with a pitched roof so I won’t be going up there to measure it. I want to buy the caps and pay a fearless person to install it. The chimney appears to have the same number of bricks up top as it does in the basement so I think I’m right but figured I’d ask you since you do this stuff. Thanks

Yeah so if your chimney is 16"x20" and the opening is 9"x13" you will want a cap that is 16 1/2" x 20 1/2" ( to be able to sit over and onto the chimney) and the opening should be made bigger by 1" on both sides so 10"x14". Then please do not let them anchor it on the top of the cap only on the face of the cap. Putting a anchor on the top side only will eventually give into leaks and corrosion. If I can post a picture of what I think you need I will post it here.

Yeah I can't post here so I'll have to post it later tonight when I get home but I will try to remember I'm sorry about that.
