- On Sept. 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene ravaged Western North Carolina. We are still without water. Neighbors created flush brigades and set up tanks with non-potable water. Our job descriptions now include picking up spring water bottles for drinking/hand washing and fill buckets with non-potable water for toilets. We are so grateful for all of the folks bringing water into West Asheville, and to our crew for rolling with it.
UPDATE: Wednesday Oct 16, we now have non-potable running water restored to the shop. Water is slowly returning to nearby neighborhoods (not yet safe for consumption) and we are hopeful that this will continue smoothly!
Our rural neighbors don't have as much access to these resources even though the people are working hard. If you are able to give, consider these groups:

Thanks to Cellarest Brewery and Cassia AVL for being a community spot for information, water, and free food. Make Noise just held a modular meet up there a little over a month ago, and sometimes hang there after work. The non-alcoholic options are as great as the beer options. Plus, thai food!

Thanks to our West Asheville neighbors. You've shared so much. If you had power, you put outlets and cables out so people could keep their phones active. You set out lawn furniture and radios so we could listen to the daily briefings together. You've said hello, how are you? with even more care and compassion. Even though life is hard right now, this is still a beautiful place to live because of y'all.
I am sure there's a lot of stuff in people's heads that need to come out and find a place. Even when a stone doesn't come back, it's not gone and it will strike at unexpected moments in unexpected places. Best possible wishes!

I’m so glad everyone at Make Noise is safe and that no one lost their home. I hope Asheville has a speedy recovery, I’m so sorry to everyone in the region affected by the storms.
The flux movement is going to be an interesting topic. As a kid who was just old enough to walk to the movie theater when Back To The Future came out, “flux” will always be tied to circuitry and the stream of time. I remember walking down 82nd ave with my best friend and talking about how cool the film was, and being irritated that he called it “kinda dorky.” What a buzz kill. But, you know, experience is an individual thing, and we all experience this flux of life in our own way. Sharing it together is the important part.🍿

I can't think of a more resilient people to make something of the noise of life. Keep it up. I'm not too far away and still plan to volunteer when there's a bit more infrastructure such that I'm not just an in-the-way tourist. Really glad to see you again. I know many of us were very worried for all of you. I too wish you all the best with the recovery. As one of the lucky few to come there for the QMMG event, I am so grateful that I was able to see Asheville and speak to all of you a few weeks ago before this happened. Looking back, it feels like a completely different timeline.

I've been wondering how MN and crew made out during this. I looked but couldn't find anything except videos of destruction. So glad you are all ok. I live in FL so expect hurricanes, but NC? Keep pushing forward...

Dude, I have used a shop vac to deal with some minor flooding and it was the worst. Carrying the vac somewhere to dump the water out.. exhausting. Your muscles must have been wrecked the next day.
Shoulders still full of knots three weeks later ☹️ there has been quite a bit of water jug hauling ever since, but the bent over shop vac job was certainly the worst for my back and shoulder

We all have to take better care of our environment. We are only guests of planet earth for a short period of time. It may not prevent us from such catastrophes, but I think priorities are set wrong in todays capitalism. But who am I to judge... But maybe such events are also a chance for a community to grow and connect. Stay strong!

@makenoise- Technical question about your videos. Are you multitracking patches? Or recording stereo mixes... Any post magic? Thanks in advance. Glad you are back and your families are safe
What you hear is a recording of the direct output of the system. I make it a point not to do any post-processing unless you count a little ducking in the mix to account for times when I talk while patching, just to let the vocal track become a little more audible.
