    Excellent video and instructions. I used this as reference and guidance to change the thermostat in a 2008 ML550. With the larger engine there is a bit less elbow room but your guidance was spot on.

    Hi Brian, excellent video; my replacement went as smoothly as yours did in the video. One thing I would mention, after I finished, I could not clear the check engine light. I knew things were working properly and after about 100 miles of driving the check engine light cleared on it's own.

    Thank you very much, Sir. I finally knew something I didn't know before about my 2011 ML350. But I am just wondering, a new thermostat only cost under $60, but a repair shop will charge me $481 before tax. So the expertise labor will cost over $400?

    Thanks for the video. I did this job on my 2007 a couple years ago and I bought a cheap chinesium thermostat off eBay..... it's leaking not closing and the engine is running too cool with CEL indicating this. Anyway, I've got a new one (German made this time) and will be attempting here in an hour or so. But the last time I did this I pulled the whole air pump off so that access to the bolts on the thermostat was easier. I'm going to try it your way first though since that will obviously save a ton of time. I never thought about pushing it to the side.... will report back
    Actually pulled first two screws off the air pump just to help it wiggle a bit more so I could fit socket in there. Amazing how much faster it goes when you don't pull the air pump off....LOL. Thanks again.

    I have a question been told after you change thermostat you have to bleed the syatem and frt the air pockets out. How do you do that?

  • @dart6588

    Awesome video! Finished it thanks to your video! However, I still get the same CEL code. I topped off the coolant, the hose to the thermostat is hot (indicating the thermostat turns on), the inside temp gauge does not indicate it’s over heating. I let it sit for about an hour, normal temp and no smoke. It started to smoke after I revved it a few times, but the engine temp is still normal!
    Suggestions? Solutions?

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike z it’s possible it’s not coolant causing it to smoke but burning oil. Which could be a bad PCV valve or internal Engine problem

    Is it possible if you use a different coolant than what the dealer uses it will make your check engine light come on... I was told my coolant thermostat needs to be replaced... prior my light for coolant came on and I went to O'Reilly and purchased some from there. Thanks

      Simon Z I don’t see a lot of the oil pans leaking. If one comes in the shop I will film it.

    Just a note that the Torx socket for the idler pulley is an E14 not E10 as per the thermostat.

    Nice video, thank you! About to try it. Question: Instead of trying to move the Air Intake Housing, would it possibly be easier to unclip and remove the front part of the air intake housing to provide access to the bolts and possibly not have to remove the S-Belt? Thanks.

    Great methodical video with good camera work. I have a 2009 ML 350. The only difference from your video was that the Torx bolt on the idler pulley that had to be removed was E12 the bolts on the thermostat were E10. I guess the Germans wanted a bit of diversity.

    up-date on the termostat the hose was coming out of the termostat after 15 minutes of driving because I was using aftermarket and the gasket was also leaking I replaced with original and the problem was solved makes a difference between a 45$ dollar termostat and a 109$ dollar termostat.

    what could be causing the hose to come out the termostat housing when the clip is in place

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dany ordonez The only reason I can think of is if the clip was not installed correctly or The hose or housing is worn out.

      Mai Le remove the lower radiator hose.

    • @maile3510
      @maile3510 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be a mess. I dont want to spill coolant to the ground. Looks like i have to bring it to a shop. Sigh...

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mai Le if you pull the hose off slowly you can control how fast the coolant comes out and have a container ready to catch it.

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But at the car and coin is hot the maybe that would not be a good thing.
