2013-2015 ML350 is also an absolute buy. Rock solid, no major issues, great 300hp little V6, no electrical problems, no air suspension. Very reliable and nice modern machines. Same for the 2013-2015 GLK350.

Hey wizard! I am picking up a 2011 ML350 today. One owner since new, ex military mechanic and he has kept this up meticulously. New tires, all flushes flushed and redone to MB specs, transmission service today, all new belts. I can attest to the timing belt on the 2007-09, I’ve had to replace mine.
My biggest issue with these models is the gas mileage is so terrible, you’d think I was driving a performance V8. I get like 13-17 usually depending on the day and traffic. That’s been my one complaint, otherwise I love it

I own a 2015 ML350 4Matic with only 53,000 miles and -- Just had to drop $3000 on multiple repairs and maintenance costs plus $500 shipping since there was an issue with the fuel system (and the closest dealership is 100 miles away), and that was after the extended warranty I bought covered $1200 in repair costs. Two oil leaks (one top and one bottom of engine), fuel system software update, spark plug replacement, transmission flush, B service.
Some previous items that were repaired under Certified Pre-owned Extended Warranty in the past were:
The driver's seat cover came apart underneath at the front (took them months to fix that since the seat cover had to be sourced from Germany). Plus I had to take it to a different dealership to get it put on correctly, since part of the seat heating element was sticking out of the front.
The driver's side seat massage mechanism broke internally and was pushing out against the back seat cushion.
The passenger side rear coil spring broke in half.
The rear door locking mechanisms glitched and decided that they would show locked, but the doors would actually be able to be opened, which would then set off the alarm.
And the infotainment system started acting up and had to be replaced.
Also, an out-of-pocket repair -- The driver's side seat belt mechanism stopped working and had to be replaced ($1200). And these are the ones just off the top of my head.
Be advised, if you buy a used one, be very prepared for some expensive repair costs unless you can work on it yourself (or live close to the Wizard's shop).

My family has had a 2006 ML350 for 10+ years and honestly, it’s been wonderful. We got it CPO in 2010 and I’m not too sure if it got the balance shaft service done, but it’s got 154k miles and we haven’t had to do it so I think it’s been done. Most expensive thing to go was the electronic ignition, which was about 2 grand and had to be fixed by the dealer (thanks to security lockups.)
I love driving it, and we’re gonna keep it for a LOOOOONG time. Love our ML350. So much so to where I’d buy another.

Her Chevy Cavalier was on its last legs - served her remarkably well for many, many years - so I decided to surprise her.
Got her a 2011 BMW 328ix Touring (station wagon).
Took the car to Europe for a while (instead of renting), drove around there, then put it back in the container on a ship heading to Montreal, Quebec.
Just got it back from the body shop after it got rear-ended by a texting driver.
Not cheap to maintain or fix, but it is a lvely car, and she loves it.

I know this since I received the recall for my 2010 ML350. Since there are no replacement parts presently, all the dealership does is a periodic vacuum leak test and tell the owner not to drive it if it fails.

I expanded my search to the Buick Lucerne and Chevy Impala (really wanted a 2010-11 Impala LTZ with the 3.9L V6), eventually settling on a 2007 Buick Lucerne. Even though the Lucerne wasn't on your Buick "buy this not that" list I made sure to buy one that had the 3.8L Gen III V6 and a completely clean CarFAX. Had to replace a brake line that rusted through right after we got it home from the dealership, and I had my mechanic shop give it an inspection at the same time. They said the shocks in the back were going to need replacement at some point fairly soon, but everything else looked OK.

Watch the transmission on that car like a Hawk, DO NOT touch it/service it if it has never been serviced before, as doing so CAN cause it to fail. When it goes (not if, when), replace it with another transmission and enjoy the next 100k+ miles in peace.

Great color combination, and I had no idea that these Benzes were legendary for reliability. I always shied away from MB due to fears of huge repair bills over 100k miles - especially if Alabama built vs Germany

Naturally aspirated V8’s from Mercedes are bulletproof as they come. The V6’s are great engines but don’t hold a candle to the V8’s long term reliability prowess. Their turbo models I’d stay away from entirely unless it was a CDI model or an imported European spec car with the 250 turbo engine. Don’t get me started on the V12’s reliability either, they’re not terrible although they have some faults, but with that many cylinders you oughta know you’re gonna pay to play when something goes wrong.

Careful wizard, these were known for lower tailgate/spare wheel well water leaks which would fry the SAM, liftgate pump, and other electrical. Happened on my X164. It is a known issue.

Wasn't a recall issued for that ? Not for X164 but for W164

I recently picked up a 2010 SL 350 Convertible precisely because it too has the steel springs and not the ABC Airmatic Suspension system. In fact, the smaller engined cars seem to me to driver sweeter than the bigger capacity engined cars as they are much lighter up front. Better gas mileage too. I could not be happier.

ABC and Airmatic are two different systems. Airmatic is Air ride, ABC is Active Body Control and uses hydraulic fluid, hydraulic pumps and hydraulic cylinders where the struts go to level the car.

I have a 2007 S550. Only thing I recommend is have a an open check book to service them 😂. But I love my car. Get compliments all the time.
