You mentioned that you were editing in a 1080p timeline… I see that this video is available and processed by TH-cam in 4K, so I’m just wondering what your export settings are. I will often shoot in 4K, edit in 1080p, and then export using compressor at 45Mbps, so that TH-cam will process it as a 4K video… The results are stunning…TH-cam processes the image so much better this way.
I decided to go back to 1080p for my 1.5h+ interviews and podcast work. HDDs storage prices are high and I like the faster workflow. I use the S5 + S5II for my work.

@@GlennUpgradedI use AF only on the S5II and only because the one guy just can not sit still. I think MF + instructions not to lean too far forward etc is still better but it just doesn’t work with the one guy.

In my tests on the S5 II and x, the sensor can't do PDAF on full-frame at 50p and above, regardless whether you're filming 1080, 4k or anything else. This doesn't affect 4k since 4k at 50 / 60 are in only the APSC crop where it can still do PDAF. But 1080 full-frame at 50p upwards switches to DFD CDAF only. If you want PDAF on 1080 at 50 / 60p, you may want to test the crop version.
4k ist no more than a working tool (for me) to have the ability to crop in post - besides that it is not needed in most use cases even in 2023. Most people are not able to tell 4k and 1080p apart on a normal screen from my experience. I shoot 1080p whenever it is possible for my projects because it additionally simplifies the work process in post.
We deliver most content in 4K, cropped or scaled from mostly 6K open gate from the S5M2 and GH6. I can see myself filming in 1080p though, the images look pretty damn good and the absence of the crop factor actually makes me consider using this from time to time. If you need the extra resolution just run it through an AI upscaler such as Topaz. Thanks for showing this and make me consider my options on future shoots.
My bff shoots 1080 all day and has had various music, fashion, documentary videos and exhibition work out in the world for magazines and clients and no one blinks an eye. Personally we both feel its a more organic / dreamy feel.
For quick turnaround 16:9 projects, 1080 works well, though more and more I’m composing for the crisscross (vertical and horizontal content from the same shot) and wanting to have the open-gate source files to pull from. it's also worth remembering that VFX heavy movies often have big VFX scenes all mastered at 2K (essentially 1080) and then upscaled. So it's fine for the big screen too.
I couldn’t agree more. The 4K 60 crop on a 6K camera is silly. And the fact that the only 120 fps we get is in 1080….That’s frustrating. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a longtime LUMIX user. I’ve owned the G85, GX8, GX85, GH5, and my current setup is the GH5S, a pair of the S5 cams and a S5II. I love these cameras. The things they do well, are superb functions done extremely well. Simultaneously, when I bought an S5II I purchased a Sony that handles higher frame rates for that exact reason. I’m not going back to MFT even though the GH6 can handle 4K 120. A lot of what I shoot is low light. The G series are fabulous, but the the S is where I’ve transitioned because of the increased quality that covers my needs. If they gave the GH5s a 4K 120 upgrade, that’d be enough for some things. But as it sits, that’s a no go. Love the S5II. But I’ll invest in Sony for the areas where LUMIX cams fall short. There’s no perfect camera. But if we could shoot higher frame rates at 4K 120 & 60 with no crop, that LUMIX S5II would be the only camera I’d be using.
Getting the slowest motion possible (within a reasonable budget) is a reason I focus heavily on the 1080 specs. This would apply to things like modeling, artistic work, and sports. 4k would be preferred if one can spend up to get it.
Asking in 2024, is Phase Detect Auto Focus not working above 50p still an issue, or was it ever addressed in a firmware update? I’ve been considering the S5 II, or the IIX, but this might be a huge downside for me. Can anyone let me know, please and thank you!
I wish they would open up some options at 2.5k in a future update like what you get on black magic cameras. Really great resolution to work in and upscales nicely to 4K. Such a shame it’s not more common on these cameras.
honestly, in my experience its less about the resolution and moreso the quality of that resolution. Shooting FHD in high bitrates is far better than shooting 4K in something like 8bit h.264 in my opinion.
No PDAF at 1080p 50fps+ but cropped 4K 50-60fps, I was actually thinking of shooting my slo-mo at 1080p but not anymore. I really wanted to love the s5iix but this simple fact makes me wanna go to with the fx30
Hi Caleb, With S5 org I did upscale a lot of 1080p 100 fps to 4K no one notice anything and the result is great imho. So it should be perfect with S5iiX with all i wow… I want it so bad…
Well, for sure there is a lot of noise in FHD 120fps introduced into image, see your last sample shot at 6:33, how much noise there is on the water. Also, im pretty sure 60fps FHD is really more detailed than FHD 120fps (but I might be wrong as I didn't have this camera in my hand). 120fps looks to me more like HD than FHD.
I have gh5 and realized that 60fps is much much cleaner than 120fps and 180fps, 180fps is basicly unusable, it looks like 720p that used ai to enhance it tbh.
@@davidvictory9764 totally agree. Everything above 60fps becomes unusable (I say it as a GH5s and GH5mII owner). Not only because of less detailed footage but also amount of noise that is being introduced even in perfect lightning conditions.
@@RT_Produkcja forreal glad I am not the only one who sees it. I thought I was doing something wrong and everyone keeps hyping up how crazy the 180fps is. I honestly rather use 60fps and then frame generation from resolve if I need more.
We shoot 1080 corporate videos all the time, especially for product training videos. It's more efficient and file sizes are easier for client to manage, upload, share and so on. With modern cameras 1080 is absolutely good quality for YT, Social and TV monitor playback We only use 4k on some projects that require some latitude with reframing, but the end result is a 1080 deliverable. Regarding the 4k 60 crop on the Lumix S5II/x, it's not a professional enough variable frame rate workflow. If you are shooting a sequence in 24fps then need a 60fps slower-motion for reinforcement of the sequence, that crop factor no longer matches UNLESS you plan it as a tighter cutaway, OR shoot everything in the S35 mode, which negates the use of the FF sensor. So just shoot in 1080 anyway, or use a more expensive true 4k/60 camera system. Most clients can't tell the difference between 1080 and 4k or care as they are more results oriented. It's only the ad agency art directors, DPs and Spielbergs that can because it is their job to do so.
Last summer I worked as a second shooter with my brother on a full schedule of weddings & events. By far the biggest headache we had to deal with was handling a 4k workflow both on the job and in post... In the end its just not worth it. All of this 8k 6k 7k downsampled - oversampled blah blah blah. In the end the clients are only interested in the quality of the story. And for this, full HD makes them more than happy.
I have been finding with my S5, that I sometimes get very obvious moiré when using FHD. However, no moiré in the same circumstances taking the same subject when the camera is recording in 4k.
Did I get it right: you’ll prefer to shot on a micro 4:3 instead of using APS-C crop on 4K on the S5iiX? Isn’t it Micro 4:3 an even bigger crop? Oh yeah but it’s not on a full frame sensor you might say! You want all time all the pixel of your full frame sensor to be available at all aspect ratio and frame rate. Does all this crop crap even making sense anymore?
When I need some extra magnification, I film in 1080p in pixel / pixel setting. It effectively is a 3x crop, so my 105mm lens turns into 315mm. Since they are using the center 2k of the sensor and cropping off the sides, I don't think it's computed, so the IQ is straight off the sensor.
I still deliver 99% of my work in 1080 no matter what I shoot in although I do shoot a lot more 4K these days for flexibility in post. Anyway as for the AF issue… Here’s my understanding of what happens based on all the reviews I’ve seen. It’s not about FHD or 4K it’s about the frame rate vs frame size. PDAF will work on 4K and FHD on anything 25/30p using the full sensor. Any faster frame rates will switch to CDAF unless the sensor is cropped which is why you still get PDAF in 4K 50/60 as that is in APS-C mode and the AF doesn’t have to work as hard… however 50/60 - 100/120 in FHD uses the full sensor so the AF switches to CDAF. Why would you do this (other than the fact there is no 100/120 in 4K)? Well one situation where you might want to shoot in FHD over 4K when shooting 50/60p is when you either don’t want to change the focal length by cropping in on the sensor to APS-C or you can’t such as if you shoot real estate videos as you want the widest FOV possible. For example if you’re lens is a 16mm and you shoot in 4K 50/60 your lens is now a 24mm with the 1.5x crop which isn’t wide enough for a lot of shots you need to get so you would have to switch to FHD. You would lose the PDAF however that isn’t really an issue as you would normally use manual AF to shoot real estate and often set your aperture to around F11 and the focus to infinity as you want everything in focus on most of the shots. Of course you could use a crop sensor camera such as the GH6 or the new G9 II and get 4K 50/60/100/120 with no crop but i guess you would lose the low light advantage of the full frame sensor and have to rely on ISO more. Your only other option is to opt for a more expensive full frame camera such, as the Sony A7sIII, that shoots 4K at high frame rates without a crop.
I just did some sharpness tests with the GH5 today. 4k With sharpness at -5 is almost the same as FHD 10 bit with sharpness at +5. There is a difference, but it's negligible imho.
It is unacceptable not to have AF in FHD, FF, in 50,60, 100 & 120p. And THE MOST UNACCEPTABLE IS THAT Panasonic HID IT FROM THE BUYERS!!!, Even now, with the release of the S5iix, it states that pdaf is not available only on 100 &120 p. ACCORDING TO THIS THERE SHOULD BE PDAF, IN FHD FF 50& 60p. THIS IS NOT TRUE, according to those who have tried it....
I am just shooting for family and fun, not professional at all. I always shot 1080p all the time, but I start shooting 4K now, only because I want some future proof… what if my kid watch them 15 years from now, I thought it will be safe to shot 4K now and in 10, 15 years later, my videos doesn’t look like those old old video shooting with VHS quality. Just my thought 😊
I wonder if one could just shoot all frame rates and resolutions (1080p, 4K, 24 fps up to slow motion) with an APSC crop. I suppose AF would be phase detect in all these modes, and if I take the 1.5 crop factor into account I can choose my lenses accordingly. Personally I think for video extreme shallow DOF ("FF look") is too much anyway, and since Hollywood films are done with super35 (=APSC) it should be good enough for hobbyists filmmakers. Of course, then the question is why bother with FF at all, and not use an APSC hybrid camera directly (like Sony's A6xxx line, or an FX30). Well, for hybrid shooters FF is relevant for photos, and maybe there is the occasional shot where 4K 24fps is desired. I currently only have my old trusted G9 (and lots of native Panasonic/Leica MFT lenses), mainly for photos and the occasional video. I really like the S5ii and have watched over a dozen videos on this camera, but I'm still not convinced to invest into a complete new system, or if I should wait and hope that Panasonic comes up with a new MFT camera with Phase-detect AF. I'm happy with MFT for photos, I it's really only the "bad" continuous AF of the G9 that bothers me.
Been in this exact scenario. I have been shooting with the gh5s and dealing with a crop since I got into film production. I am lacking a decent photo camera currently and after doing some tests on the s5 and s5ii this is my exact thought as I have been super impressed with the photos. But I agree. Just shoot in the apsc crop modes and make that the norm. I plan on giving it one more try like this with a handful of different lenses on a small project coming up to be my final decision.
The last 3 commercials I shot for clients were all shot in 1080p. To be honest no one even notices. I feel like we care because this is what we do and we have an idea in our minds how things should look but because of the dumbing down of video quality due to apps like TikTok the majority don’t care or can’t tell
Whenever I look at the settings of TH-cam videos, it is set to automatic, the display is even less than FHD 1080! And most TV broadcasts are never in 4K either.
I’m all about shooting with intention so just shoot for parameters of the specific job. Unless you’re unclear of final output or if you might need more resolution for a future project then shoot higher than you need.
I've thought about that a lot this year. In July and August I've been directing a short film that is shot on a FX9 and a ZV-E1, and looking at the footage we shot on 4K, if it were on 1080p I would feel a little uncomfortable with editing it. We shot it mostly handheld so being able to fix the orientation of the video, or like you said punch in, without losing much quality has been a great experience. However earlier this May I did a job for a client and although I shot it in 4K, the deliverable was 1080p. So, to sum up my thoughts, even if 1080p is still the gold standard for viewing content, it doesn't hold up to 4K anymore it the production phase of any project, 4K is basically a requirement for the edit, anyone who is still shooting 1080p either needs it for B-cam footage or their clients aren't paying eough for them to go through the hustle of dealing with 4K footage.
I always have to deliver my 4k 6k videos to 1080 as i post on social media and 4k and higher causes problems on many devices. We ilve in a 1080 world. At least in social media where the most produced content goes.
I just go for 1080p as i’m usually posting my content for social media and even my clients. They are happy with my videos. Owning GH5ii is a happy decision as its 1080p is awesome compared to Sony - Sony ZVE10 in 1080p was horrible. Had to traded it for GH5ii.
Hello, I'm a beginner. I plan on buying Lumix 5siix for my student project. I will film interviews indoors with 4k footage. Can you please suggest to me the most budget lens for the camera? Thank you so much in advance!
I went to s5 and love the interface but gave up my micro4/3 and an a7ii to have 1 camera and was so disappointed by its auto focus, aliasing was worse on that camera than either of my previous cameras and the rolling shutter utter dogs hit. I am scared to upgrade to the s5iix because I don't suspect the aliasing or shutter to be any better, what's your thoughts on this?
Hello! I fully agree with you! in my opinion, for huge majority of people, being able to shoot at 6K video is just useless (I am not talking about professional film-makers here). Most of prosumer users post on social media and FHD 1080 is more than sound quality.
If I knew I wouldn't be stabilizing or re-framing in post, something around 1440 would be just fine by me. As long as there's a good reason for it, 1080 is fine.
To me 4k or 1080p it more about the content. Its like old movies like taxi driver for example the quality is not high but the cinematography is what counts
The recording in FHD looks absolutely great. It certainly wasn't a job. You have to figure out what you need the recordings for and who needs them. After that you can decide. I will certainly be filming in FHD 120fps as well. Thank you for the video and your good example.
Yeah you know how many times my client has demanded a 4k final deliverable? Basically never. You know how many times they've needed a 1080 final deliverable? Many times. Take for a cinema pre-roll ad, for example.
it’s not the end of the world but clients are asking for higher resolution deliverables every day. we should be criticizing Lumix for literally stepping backward, not being complacent with specs from 2015. “you don’t NEED 4k” was true 10 years ago before 4k TVs existed.
to answer your question, you wouldn't be filming at 1.9Gbps at 4K full frame it would likely be 2.6Gbps and long term that's heat in a very small body and even with a fan, problematic.
The thing is a huge lot of cameras are horrible in Full HD. Sony's APS-C cameras (that are superb in 4k, oversampled), are dreadful in 1080p, as they do a horrible upsample, from at most HD, or ever from a smaller image. The Sony full-frame cameras lilke the a7 III and a7 IV are a bit better. But the Panasonic S5 seems to be absolutely stunning, extremely detailed (as well as other Panasonic cameras, and some Fuji ones, and maybe from others too). And as the S5 II is using the same sensor, it makes sense.
Blasphemy! How dare you defile my precious eyes with footage shot in mere 1080?!??!?!? But seriously: do we all wish we could have everything for a low price? Of course. Is Panasonic possibly holding out some features to protect higher end models? Maybe. Is the S5ii X sill a good choice for some users (like me)? Absolutely. I'll take the compromises for the higher frame rates given the overall capabilities of the camera and in comparison to the competition.
I just got my s5ii and haven't shot anything with it yet but I was wondering if I would be able to get away with shooting FHD for some projects. I think shooting APS-C in 1080p50fps does get the PDAF so might actually use that.
I'm looking at your footage on my 8k monitor and 1080p really looks... mushy. If I want to shoot 1080p I'll just go with my Lumix g85 or Olympus em 10 mk3. For years I've been using a 1080p monitor to edit and view 4k footage shot on my Samsung NX1. It wasn't until I got a 4k monitor, when I fell out of my chair when I saw how incredibly detailed the video images were.
Oh, Ok a REAL REVIEW Someone isn’t beholden to the Camera Loans and future FAVOR model… YET! 😂 Nah really though… The ‘X’ should be 120 4k. Sorry YOU DON’T THROW AROUND THE ‘X’ like it doesn’t mean anything… OK Pro Res internal but come on!
I hate it when finding some camera or lens test video that is still coming out in 1080p in 2023, as honestly those test need to be in 4k so I can actually inspect the image quality of the lens on my big monitor. As seeing 1080p on a big screen just looks really bad certain cameras 1080p is like 720p upscaled ugly. There only a handful of 1080p camera that does proper 1080p that can be upscaled to 4k and still looks nice. Panasonic should not be making camera with 4k crop as pretty sure they can do a proper 4k 60p out of the camera and just trying to make it not overly compete with they S1H, which is kinda stupid as S5iix already got so much improvements that its a nobrainer. But hopefully see S1HX improvement autofocus and also the very powerfull ibis.

Awesome vid! One of the reasons why I want to grab the s5iix is internal 1080 prores.
Dude those shots looked great! Damn maybe I have to start using 1080p again from time to time 😂😂
We shoot 1080 corporate videos all the time, especially for product training videos.
Thank you John, I was wondering which true 4K/60 camera you will recommend ❤.
Just give us 1080p 50-120 FPS full frame with PDAF all the way!
💯
I have been finding with my S5, that I sometimes get very obvious moiré when using FHD. However, no moiré in the same circumstances taking the same subject when the camera is recording in 4k.
Wow! I had to switch the YT video player from 360p to 480p to enjoy this 1080p footage.
Shooting 1080p fir my current full time videography job and it’s coming out beautifully on the G9. Just need to find the right light.
I have heard that the autofocus fails when recording in 1080p, can someone help me clear this doubt please?
Resolution isn’t always indicative of quality.
And THE MOST UNACCEPTABLE IS THAT Panasonic HID IT FROM THE BUYERS!!!,
Even now, with the release of the S5iix, it states that pdaf is not available only on 100 &120 p.
ACCORDING TO THIS THERE SHOULD BE PDAF, IN FHD FF 50& 60p.
THIS IS NOT TRUE, according to those who have tried it....
Man, are you sure about that? 😮
1080P and a cropped image is a " Deal Breaker" in 2023 Panasonic.
Open gate is avalable in fullhd120?
How does the image quality compare from the Lumix S5IIX and A7S III?
I always have to deliver my 4k 6k videos to 1080 as i post on social media and 4k and higher causes problems on many devices. We ilve in a 1080 world. At least in social media where the most produced content goes.
I wanna buy s5ii and i know about crop mode if i record 60 fps in 4k but what if i rec in 1080p?
Is the autofocus in 1080/120 different with the 2.0 firmware on the non X, or same result?
Interesting topic for sure!
I def got the impression that s5iix's 1080 recording is bad from the title.
Shame you cant do 4:3 opengate 1080. 2560x1920 full frame. 3.3k has apsc crop
On 120p ibis is can work?
4k mostly helps if you need to crop, reframe or stabilize in post.
Hello! I fully agree with you! in my opinion, for huge majority of people, being able to shoot at 6K video is just useless (I am not talking about professional film-makers here). Most of prosumer users post on social media and FHD 1080 is more than sound quality.
I shoot HS 4K 30MB 4:2:2 10bit PP OFF on my A7iv, files sizes are smaller than 1080p and also sharper! 😊.
I want a gh4 whith the new autofocus.
Why GH4 ?
@@catattackcat8754 size, ergonomics, sensor size, could be only full HD, but i need the auto focus and the low price.
If I knew I wouldn't be stabilizing or re-framing in post, something around 1440 would be just fine by me. As long as there's a good reason for it, 1080 is fine.
I LIKE HIgh frame rates and 1080 works because the end product is viewed even on computers at 1080 ...I have my eye on the gh6
Can you do review and test footages on including 1080p on Panasonic 24 70f2.8 s pro lens on s52x
To me 4k or 1080p it more about the content. Its like old movies like taxi driver for example the quality is not high but the cinematography is what counts
Sony ZV-E1 is gonna have uncropped 4K 120P we need to start seeing Lumix have at minimum 4K 60P without a crop
FHD with high color bit depth and 400mbps, I don't mind at all!
People Shoot 6k 30fps apple pro res etc and make no money with a camera. Some shoot 1080 MP4 8 Bit and make Money with a Camera ^^ 😅
Good video. Thanks. toronto canada.
I like shooting 1080 mov on my G9. Prefer that over 4k.
I just came home from a client where I only shoot 1080p all the time :) for Social media super duper enough
lumix gotta get it together
Since this video is 480p it’s all good enough especially if it’s just for TH-cam
The recording in FHD looks absolutely great. It certainly wasn't a job. You have to figure out what you need the recordings for and who needs them. After that you can decide. I will certainly be filming in FHD 120fps as well. Thank you for the video and your good example.
youtuber Josh Sattin claims AF in 1080p 60 and above can't work with phase detect - is that really the case?
Yep it is, made videos on it on my channel!
I didn't know Herbert the Pervert had a record deal.
Oh, I had to wear my glasses I wondered why the quality was so bad. 1080P. I just can’t do it 😝
Skyfall. Unwatchable 1080. Never made any money either. And a bad DP.
to answer your question, you wouldn't be filming at 1.9Gbps at 4K full frame it would likely be 2.6Gbps and long term that's heat in a very small body and even with a fan, problematic.
Personally I dislike that shooting in 1080p comes with downsides. It should be better in everything but resolution!
Compare 1080 with 4k and there is very little difference. Now compare 1080 with 400 and you see a huge difference. Dynamic range is the Holy Grail.
I'm still in 1080p, will not move up :D
I just got my s5ii and haven't shot anything with it yet but I was wondering if I would be able to get away with shooting FHD for some projects. I think shooting APS-C in 1080p50fps does get the PDAF so might actually use that.
It isn't horrible, but it's only passable. 4k is superior and of course is discernible from 1080.
Oh, Ok a REAL REVIEW
Someone isn’t beholden to the Camera Loans and future FAVOR model… YET! 😂
Nah really though… The ‘X’ should be 120 4k.
But hopefully see S1HX improvement autofocus and also the very powerfull ibis.
rip I shoot in 1080....
Cropped 4k is huge fail IMO. GH6 all the way.
I agree..! 🎉
Loving my GH6 and the Auto Focus is a dream compared to my g85
Ja for video gh6 is king. Not for photos tough . Thats why i want both cameras gh and s5
@@andersistbesser Do people still take pictures?😂😂
