    I pulled around 25-30 worms from between boards in a wet lumber pile I had behind my barn...stuck them in a tote, filled it about 6" high with soaked pine pellets and cardboard...gave them a week or so, then started feeding them scraps, coffee grounds, and baby food every other week or so, lol...along with cardboard tubes and shreds. Fast forward 6 months and there's more worms in there than I could ever count. The entire tote is alive lol.
    My grandson loves it, and I'm making great vermicompost for next spring.
    Awesome video, thanks for sharing.

    They never stop surprising, only a worm farmer will understand the exitement when opening your worm farm/bin/bag, and you see the food is all gone as well as some of the bedding, i checked in on some of my systems today and noticed one of my bins is overly wet, muddy, so i gave them dry food, a mixture of leftover wheat cereal and some powder thats on the bottom of the dog kibbles bag, covered up and closed the lid

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes!! It always amazes me to see what they have done with the food I give them!! I get a little too excited sometimes😂🤣😂 I never thought of giving them the crumbs at the bottom of the dog food bag, I'll have to try that next time we get a bag!! Thanks for the tip!! I hope you have a Happy New Year!!🪱🪱🪱

    Another entertaining, well made video Patrick!
    That poor jack-o-lantern never stood a chance.
    Your vermi bag is really bulking up well.
    I sliced open and buried a couple medium loofahs in a couple bins and they were just full of worms after about 2 weeks, kinda like the worms in the remaining pumpkin.
    Happy New Year! Stay Well!!!!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you Brian!! I should have done the same thing with my loofahs...we had a bumper crop even though I though the pest were devastating them at the beginning of the season! They are about the only thing that grows down here in July & August. I love how they showcase the worms & how much the worms are drawn to them!! This Urban Worm Bag is finally getting full...but I'm about to harvest a bunch of castings since Autumn got me two more 4 x 8 raised garden beds for Christmas!! Time to put it to use!! Thanks so much for all your support, we appreciate it!! Have a Happy New Year!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Growing loofah up here in WI can be hit and miss with our summer weather, learned last year not to try and direct sow them.
      Two more garden beds, awesome, Autumn is putting you to work, lol.
      When is your window for tomatoes? My sister recently moved to St Augustine FL, I am sure she will be asking gardening advice.
      Stay Well Patrick!!!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, Autumn is putting me to work and I am taking up almost all of our backyard!! We have two seasons for tomatoes, Planting seeds starting in mid to late January to plant in late February, early March...the pest pressure and heat usually will overcome the tomatoes by July. Then seeding again mid August to plant in mid to late September. Occasionally tomato plants will make it through the winter if we don't get a freeze and then you can get an extension into spring for indeterminate varieties! But, if she lives close to the coast, she may not get a freeze/frost that far North in Florida.

    How did that timing compare to the last pumpkin?
    They did a terrific job demolishing it. I was surprised to see them in the dry cardboard as much as they were - I was a little nervous for you!
    We are looking forward to the harvesting video!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      First of all, I have to thank you both for convincing me to re try this experiment!! We had much better results this time around!! In the last experiment I did it in the summer. W had to stop the experiment after 14 days, before it was consumed, because the smell was so bad!! When we dug in, it had a different sewer type smell so things were going anaerobic inside. We ended up breaking up the pumpkin and adding more bedding to get the bin back in order. The worms we found were around the periphery but not really in the pumpkin flesh like we saw in this try. I think the cooler temperatures, combined with filling it with shredded cardboard helped us this time around. If I had to do it again, I would add damp shredded cardboard instead of the dry I put in. It's been a while since I harvested so I should get a nice one!! I'll need it since Autumn got me two more 4x8 raised garden beds I'll need to fill with soil. Thanks again for the idea & for watching!! We hope you all have a Happy New Year!!🪱🪱🪱

    One hand gloved the other not? I dont care either way but having both breaks my brain.
    Did you have an injury on one hand or something?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Believe it or not there is a method to my madness! I just use a glove on my right hand because that’s the hand that typically digs into the bin & my dirty finger nails don’t look very good on camera to me. I usually only hold things or pick up things with my left hand so no need for a glove as the finger nails stay clean on that hand. I also figured I'd save more gloves that way! I have no issues getting my bare hands into the worm bin when I'm not filming, it is just for aesthetics on videos!! I know it looks odd to wear just one when my left hand gets dirty anyway! Either way I wash my hands after "playing" with the worms!! Thanks so much for asking a question I'm sure lots of other folks have & of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Mr. Pumpkin Face looked like he needed a shave with all that mould action going on! Did you have any liquid come out the bottom, Patrick? Tough love for worms = instead of "eat your vegetables" it's "eat your cardboard!"

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      😂🤣😂It was the "Picture of Dorian Gray"getting older with all the grey mold hair it was growing!! You are absolutely right, I did have liquid come out the bottom, I even took a picture of it, but forgot to mention it so I didn't include the picture. If only I could have redistributed that up to the dry cardboard I put all around it...I just didn't want to disrupt the time lapse so I dumped it in my compost pile. Yes, my worms are getting tough cardboard love right now....lots of cardboard to chew up! Thanks so much for watching Sandra!! Happy New Year!!🪱🪱🪱

      Patrick, I bought some wicking twine (called self watering rope or self watering twine on Amazon) to set up my plant containers last spring. Then we decided to put our house on the market, so I saved it to use in the future. BUT, this twine may work really well in yourUWB. When you set it up next time, you could spiral the twine through the bedding (maybe focussed on the centre where the moisture tends to accumulate) and bring the twine up towards the top. Capillary action will keep moving the water upwards. Of course, the worms will eat the twine eventually and you will keep needing to replace it every few months, but that's a small price to pay!
      ~ Sandra

      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Very interesting!! I'll look it up!! I've actually been getting pretty good at feeding in such a way that I don't get liquid down below, I think it was just this pumpkin that was concentrated with water and concentrated in the center that gave me liquid down below and dry bedding up top surrounding it.

    I have a question. Adding coffee all the time won't make the compost acid?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Where as freshly ground coffee is a little acidic, used coffee grounds have almost a neutral pH, so no issues with spent coffee in your worm bin. I had the same concerns and looked up several videos of folks testing the pH of coffee grounds and they found that used coffee grounds are good to go! Thanks for asking a great question I'm sure a lot of folks have!! And of course, thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      Have you tried using water that has had mosquito dunks soaking in it? It should work on any insect in the Diptera Order (pretty much all flies). It disrupts their life cycle so it doesn't kill the ones flying around but will prevent them from reproducing. I don't have any issues with flies, gnats or fruit flies in my bins when I use this mosquito dunks solution water. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      Oh man...That is my go to and it's still not working...the only other thing I've tried that worked well in both my garden and in my worm bins are dual sided yellow sticky bug traps: amzn.to/3PkxNTQ in fact it worked too well and a couple lizards got stuck to them...took me 45 minutes each time to get them off alive! Some folks have also put a little jar or dish of water with some vinegar in it, with a drop off dish dish soap. Gnats, fungus flies and fruit flies are attracted to it and get stuck in the water. It sounds like you have probably tired everything so I hope removing all the material finally does those flies in!!

    Those 🪱🪱🪱were surely well fed the last three weeks. Love those timelapse videos. Nice update on the floofah. Did you start this bin with 10,000 worms or have they reproduced to that population? 🤿🤙

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you Mike!! About two years ago I added about 3,000 worms over the first 2 months of it's life, the rest have reproduced from their! It took about 6 months to slowly build up the bin with bedding and food scraps during my various checkins and feedings. The bin is super deep and the worms are all thought out it...right now especially below that more dry cardboard layer. My plan is to keep feeding them every few days to try to get them to migrate up more and then harvest a bunch for my new garden beds!! Hopefully we can get some good action in the new food for next video and get less in the harvest!! Thanks for dropping by to watch!! Have a Happy New Year!!🪱🪱🪱

      @ very nice! Can’t wait for the follow-up. I just did the last feeding of the year for my bins (5-tray worm factory 360 and a 27gal tote with a wedge are my main setups…couple test breeder setups too). Not sure how many worms there are these days. Added a second pound within 6-8 months of the initial setup in Oct 2023. They’re definitely breeding. Once we move and there’s more space for this “worm-sanity” I plan on doing a count by weight - only have 10 fingers and 10 toes LOL. Good luck with the new beds and Happy New Year to you guys as well!🪱🤿🤙
