    Walker (percy's actor) always wears makeup to not look washed out while filming, and when percy got poisoned, they just took off the makeup.

    I don't think they bring it up in the show, but the reason Clarisse was so mad about her broken spear was because it was a gift from her dad, Ares. It's made to be similar to Ares' own spear.

    Episode 4 where Percy falls off the St. Louis arc and gets grabbed by the Mississippi River is a point of some contention in the fandom lol. In the book, Percy jumps off the Arch into the river on purpose to get away from Echidna. Which is mildly impossible, because the Mississippi River is about a mile away from the Arch. Rick has admitted he made a mistake when he wrote the scene because he assumed the river ran through the Arch. So when this show was first announced, everyone started theorizing how the hell this scene was going to work. And the answer was "yoink!"

    • @micahgoldson1253
      @micahgoldson1253 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      I lived in St. Louis. The Mississippi River is not "about a mile" away from the arch, it is pretty close, like 500 FEET. The issue that Rick admitted he overlooked is that he assumed the arch spanned over the river, so when Percy fell he thought he would just fall right into the river. But the arch is actually next to the river, so under it is just land. Percy would need to be blown a few hundred feet to the east while falling in order to hit the river.

    I think the thing about Luke's character that I like the most is that he did genuinely care about Percy. Even in the end fight, you could see that he didn’t *want* to hurt him. He was trying really hard to get him on his side so he wouldn’t have to.

    They did the Sally/Gabe relationship such a disservice in this imo. Gabe is an abusive piece of shit in the books, which is why Sally stayed with him. She believed that his aura was so disgusting, that it would hide Percy from the monsters (In one of the books Percy says that Tartarus, the deepest pit in the underworld, smells like Gabe). In the book Sally uses Medusa's head to turn Gabe into a statue and sells him to an art gallery.

    • @butterflybe3
      @butterflybe3 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      agreed but I don’t mind how they did it because at least Gabe is gone. but I feel like that detail of why she stayed with him matters so much to show how much she sacrificed for him. but the show did a good job of showing that emotion anyways. I think the movie had a more accurate Gabe but again I personally don’t mind it. I feel like if they had more episodes with more time, they could have shown that more abusive side of Gabe and the affect it had on Percy and Sally.

    It's fairly accurate to the book. They moved a few things around for practicality and to help streamline some story elements but it's faithful overall. Honestly I like some of the changes like Gabe being more annoying and pathetic than abusive and rude. Though, I think the kids seemingly knowing what’s going to happen gets a little annoying. It leaves out some tension for situations. Bc yes some of the traps they fall for are obvious and stupid but they’re kids and it’s cool to see how they’ll navigate those situations and slowly discovering what’s going on instead of instantly guessing it.

    A really nice detail I noticed were the parallels between Medusa and Athena. Athena blamed and punished Medusa for something Poseidon did, turning her into a monster. She did the exact same to Annabeth. She blamed her daughter for something a son of Poseidon did (bringing him into her temple probably didn’t help), and punished her by letting a monster come after her when she could have protected her. It really hits home the point that not all heroes look like heroes. It also cements that the Gods will always make the same mistakes due to their hubris, therefore creating problems for them and their children later down the line

    Having Lance Reddick as Zeus was a blessing because he had this sort of godly and also super intimidating aura. He transmitted power, fear and respect as Zeus and it really is a shame that he passed. May his soul rest in peace.
    The entire cast is amazing, I think Adam Copeland as Ares is honestly such a blessing because he´s simply hilarious and he did say that sparring with Walker Scobell (aka Percy) was great because he´s very hardworking and a natural.
    Also, YES, TIMESKIP INCOMING!!! Similarly to the Harry Potter franchise, each book is a new school year at Hogwarts; in the Percy Jackson Universe, each book is a new year at camp (there is one exception though, so just wait and see). The timeskips will be important as the next seasons get developed. Hopefuly we´ll be getting all 5 Percy Jackson and The Olympians books into a t.v. series adaptation. 5 seasons with this cast would be incredibly awesome!!!!

    Fun fact (and its all non-spoiler, coming from a long time book reader) but Percy has 2 main nicknames in the fandom. Persassy, cause hes even sassier in the books and sarcastic as hell. And Percy "pay your child support" Jackson for reasons know to book readers. Percy is ALL FOR changing the game and actually making the gods respect and appreciate their kids mostly because of our queen and savior Sally Jackson.

    Clarisse was so upset about her spear because it's the one gift she had from Ares. The most important thing in her life was being the toughest person at camp and her spear, Percy took both of those away in three days. Also it's a summer camp, hence they left at the same time. And Gabe was MUCH worse in the books, which they might mention at some point in future seasons, but he canonically hit Sally and she actively killed him in the books with medusa's head and sold him to an art museum or a collector or something and got a bunch of money from it that allowed them to buy a bigger apartment and let her go to college to study writing and quit her job at a sweet shop.

    The Percy and Luke relationship is just perfect they are amazing parallels/character foils. Luke is such a perfect antagonist because on some level he is right about the gods they are shitty parents, they are selfish, they don’t care about their kids (for the most part). It would be so easy for Percy to join Luke, and I think some part of Percy agrees with Luke just not with his method of teaming up with Kronos. I’m glad in the show they really dedicated a substantial amount of time in developing the percy and luke relationship because I think it makes the betrayal hit even harder than in the books (in my personal opinion). And their fight at the end of episode 8 also shows both their fatale flaws (all demigods have a fatale flaw) Percy’s is personal loyalty (when he apologized to Luke for hurting him while they were literally sword fighting) and Luke’s is excessive wrath (he immediately swings back harder even after Percy apologizes for hurting him) 😭😭

    Absolutely love your reaction. I've been a fan of Rick Riordan since the Tres Navarre series. I couldn't even get through the first Percy movie because of how bad it is. But I've watched the series countless times and I'm still obsessed with it. It's not just faithful to the books, it enhances them where it should. The show is perfect so far and I hope we get to see the rest of the books come to life through this same cast and crew.

    One of the changes from the books I am not particularly pleased about is the entrance to the underworld and the struggle in crusty's shop. In the book, they face a LOT more danger in the mattress shop and barely make it out, and I was excited to see the scene brought to life, as well as the books entrance to the underworld. I looked forward to it for weeks as it was coming out, and was kinda disappointed with how they did it. Most changes I understand, but if anyone has a reason for this change it would be greatly appreciated, because I can't find anything other than runtime being a reason. And it honestly bugs me

    The kids are great and the series is better than the movies, but the movies had such great casting... Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Nathan Fillion as Hermes, Stanley Tucci as Dionysus... and so many more.Except for Edge as Ares, total chef's kiss.

    Just for some clarification, in the books Grover didn't rat Percy out, Grover instead tried to take the blame for him, but Miss Dodds used the situation to separate Percy from the others to try to attack him, Mr Brunner then shows up and gives him a pen that turns into a sword to kill Miss Dodds, then Mr Brunner and Grover act like nothing happened and like Miss Dodds didn't exist at all.

    • @ashleyjohnson9651
      @ashleyjohnson9651 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      There's still elements of abuse seen here, they may go more into it in later episodes. We dont yet see any physical abuse but it's obvious Gabe thinks Sally being able to do things she wants is because he is "allowing her" after she agrees to do something he wants. That's a sign of emotional abuse

    • @Zodiac_Angel
      @Zodiac_Angel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      He's still abusive in the show it's abuse that isn't seen but more of an emotional one and he's just as manipulative in the show when he was spewing his crocodile tears of Sally and Percy disappearing. Plus I think showing physical abuse would've been really triggering to people and kids who either have a parent and/or step parent like Gabe

    • @felwalkr_94
      @felwalkr_94 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah.
      In the books, he's far more physically abusive towards Sally, and I guess that would've made him easier to hate, and thus his petrification a lot more enjoyable.
      Also, props to the Percy Jackson series to not have a redemption arc for an abusive parental guardian and to just get rid of them in the first book.
      One thing I'm expecting in season 2 is that Percy and Clarisse can bond a bit over having abusive father figures (Clarisse's being Ares and Percy's being Gabe). We never really saw that and I think it'd be a good idea.

    33 minutes in I feel like every single beat of intent behind the writing and acting (particularly when keeping the books in mind) has gotten through to you and that is insane to me, and ups my respect for this adaptation as a loooong time reader of the books. Well except a couple easter eggs but just because they didn't actually mean anything to you without the reference, yknow? So, yeah. Good on Rick and the writers, good on the people acting, and good on you, too.
    You were *in* so goddamn fast, and I just love that.
    I was almost exclusively bothered by the pacing of this show, but I was very fucking bothered by it. But the more I watch reactions to it, the less bothered I am. Especially this one. The beats are hitting you, somehow, as fast as they are, and with that little build-up. Which says a bit about the execution, I believe. We do still need more time in season 2, though. We need it badly.
