I didn't know who Walker when I saw he was cast as Percy so to see how good of an actor he is I watched the movie you're talking about and a line he says in that movie I don't remember but it was the line was something like "have you ever gotten your ass kicked by a 12 year old" I immediately knew he was the perfect Percy and honestly he and all the kids in their roles are perfect🥰 btw I'm 26 and watching this show cuz I discovered the books in middle school and have been into the series for years
Still the best adaptation of my childhood favorite book series I could have ever hoped for. The changes are good, the times they quoted directly made me grin incredibly wide, and it somehow managed to capture the atmosphere perfectly. My comfort show. I'm so glad y'all are doing this.
They did the Sally/Gabe relationship such a disservice in this imo. Gabe is an abusive piece of shit in the books, which is why Sally stayed with him. She believed that his aura was so disgusting, that it would hide Percy from the monsters (In one of the books Percy says that Tartarus, the deepest pit in the underworld, smells like Gabe). In the book Sally uses Medusa's head to turn Gabe into a statue and sells him to an art gallery.
I think the thing about Luke's character that I like the most is that he did genuinely care about Percy. Even in the end fight, you could see that he didn’t *want* to hurt him. He was trying really hard to get him on his side so he wouldn’t have to.
A really nice detail I noticed were the parallels between Medusa and Athena. Athena blamed and punished Medusa for something Poseidon did, turning her into a monster. She did the exact same to Annabeth. She blamed her daughter for something a son of Poseidon did (bringing him into her temple probably didn’t help), and punished her by letting a monster come after her when she could have protected her. It really hits home the point that not all heroes look like heroes. It also cements that the Gods will always make the same mistakes due to their hubris, therefore creating problems for them and their children later down the line
can't wait for season 2, by the sounds of it they're taking a break from the Volume stage and using actual locations. Apparently they were seen filming on a beach in British Columbia
I'm so excited cuz I've been getting into Epic the musical cuz i absolutely love the Odyssey so when I realized Sea of Monsters is basically just the Odyssey I felt so dumb for not realizing it in middle school 😅
@@DianaDxD I absolutely love how Rick put modern spins on the classic greek epics. The odyssey is pretty obvious with Sea of Monsters, but if you pay attention in The Last Olympian, if you follow a certain two campers, one doesn't fight out of pride, while the other takes up their armor to lead the charge. Directly mirroring Achilles and Patrocles in the Illiad.
Fun fact (and its all non-spoiler, coming from a long time book reader) but Percy has 2 main nicknames in the fandom. Persassy, cause hes even sassier in the books and sarcastic as hell. And Percy "pay your child support" Jackson for reasons know to book readers. But you commented that Percy was trying to change the game with Annabeth's perception of love and I immediately thought of it. Percy is ALL FOR changing the game and actually making the gods respect and appreciate their kids mostly because of our queen and savior Sally Jackson.
Episode 4 where Percy falls off the St. Louis arc and gets grabbed by the Mississippi River is a point of some contention in the fandom lol. In the book, Percy jumps off the Arch into the river on purpose to get away from Echidna. Which is mildly impossible, because the Mississippi River is about a mile away from the Arch. Rick has admitted he made a mistake when he wrote the scene because he assumed the river ran through the Arch. So when this show was first announced, everyone started theorizing how the hell this scene was going to work. And the answer was "yoink!"
I love how you can absolutely see where Luke is coming from and want to agree with him on some level but trying to kill Percy by sending him to Tartarus is just too far.
This was a faithful adaption for me. As someone who has enjoyed the books for over 15 years, the changes that were made in the show made it better and brought somethings into present day. Not leaving it in 2005 when Rick Riordan originally wrote the book. I can't wait for season 2! The author also worked closely on the show which makes me and a lot of fans feel better about the small changes that were made.
There's still elements of abuse seen here, they may go more into it in later episodes. We dont yet see any physical abuse but it's obvious Gabe thinks Sally being able to do things she wants is because he is "allowing her" after she agrees to do something he wants. That's a sign of emotional abuse
He's still abusive in the show it's abuse that isn't seen but more of an emotional one and he's just as manipulative in the show when he was spewing his crocodile tears of Sally and Percy disappearing. Plus I think showing physical abuse would've been really triggering to people and kids who either have a parent and/or step parent like Gabe
Yeah. In the books, he's far more physically abusive towards Sally, and I guess that would've made him easier to hate, and thus his petrification a lot more enjoyable. Also, props to the Percy Jackson series to not have a redemption arc for an abusive parental guardian and to just get rid of them in the first book. One thing I'm expecting in season 2 is that Percy and Clarisse can bond a bit over having abusive father figures (Clarisse's being Ares and Percy's being Gabe). We never really saw that and I think it'd be a good idea.
It's fairly accurate to the book. They moved a few things around for practicality and to help streamline some story elements but it's faithful overall. The only thing I wish they could have that they can't for practical reasons is, in the books, Percy isn't supposed to be able to get wet unless he wants to or the water is under the control of an opposing sea god
We would definitely watch live action reactions, I love Brooklyn 99, I'd love to see you watch it! I love how it's Hephaestus specifically that Annabeth convinces... cause out of all the Gods, he's the one who knows full well how the Gods treat each other, what the Gods are like, cause he's experienced it since birth (When he was born, Hera thought he was so ugly that she threw him out of Olympus) From what I can remember, Hephaestus doesn't actually show up in the books this early, but I really like what they did with him and this scene, not to mention them casting an actual disabled actor to play him
Fun Fact: The Author of Percy Jackson Series, "Rick Riordan," he played the Principle, also not only the book fans hate the movie, that includes the Author too.
I just paused the video at 20:35 because you just pointed out he was fighting in the rain and that makes him stronger and I’ve read the books more times than I can count and have seen the show twice and never noticed and this NEVER happens to me😂 congratulations😂😂
So happy there's reaction to this series, and I'm vary glad you loved it. Can't wait for S2, and I really hope Disney greenlights at least all 5 books of original series, they set up the story so well
My niece saw me cry for the first time a year after my father died. I’ve never seen her show emotion, the hug she gave me damn near broke my heart a second time that day.
I overall enjoyed this series. I agree with people that it moves a little too fast, not giving the characters time to figure things out for themselves on screen. I like a lot of aspects of this series, and I also like a lot of aspects of the film.
I love percy jackson and it's really good that they are making a series about it and it was so god damn good, the actors did a really good job and I hope Disney adapt at least the 5 books
LOVED the reaction! I’ve been a fan of these books for almost 10 years and all I can say is that I really liked this show. Yes, they changed things but honestly, I didn’t feel like those changes ruined the essence of the story Also, I felt like the energy of the characters was there throughout the whole season (Sorry if I sound like a robot, English isn't my first language)
i fw group reaction channels cause the energy is diff as a full group or combinations and even solo. I love every one of the diff energies it brings and feels fresh i fw all of sorta stupid
Welcome to fandom, have a look around, any Greek/Roman God that brain of yours can think of can be found. We got mountains of fan fic, some is pretty good some is pretty dog shit, if none of its of interest to you you’d be the first…. Edit: NOW FOR THE SEQUEL!! “We don’t talk about the MOVIES”
Hades has always been the best of the big 3. Other than Persephone who grew to love him, he’s pretty much just done his job and caused the least harm. Which is why Disney’s Hercules is a hard watch for me.
Percy and Annabeth are supposed to be 12 (almost 13) here in book/season 1. The original 5 books take place over 4 summers (and 1 winter in between). Grover is older in years but not maturity, due to being a satyr.
You guys should watch Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Its long but so worth it in the end. Gets better every season and slowly incorperates super powers, magic rocks, time travel, aliens etc. Really cool plot.
I sold the movies first then read the first book or at least half of it because I barely remember it and it honestly feels like a fever dream but I love the TV show
PERCY JACKSON im a massive mythology fan and i love the series while the movies... weren't the best this show version is very close to the books 100% accurate no but much close to the book and much better imo
Just a little reminder that the mist changes how the mortals see anomalous things. For example, in the scene when the chimera/manticore(Don't remember if they changed it in the series) passed before the window in the train, we see a little dog. That's how mortals saw it. If a mortal saw the bolt, they probably would see a crowbar or something like that.
I didn't see it in the comments, so Im gonna say it: the reason Clarisse screamed at Percy for breaking her spear was because it was a gift from Ares (her dad).
Just for some clarification, in the books Grover didn't rat Percy out, Grover instead tried to take the blame for him, but Miss Dodds used the situation to separate Percy from the others to try to attack him, Mr Brunner then shows up and gives him a pen that turns into a sword to kill Miss Dodds, then Mr Brunner and Grover act like nothing happened and like Miss Dodds didn't exist at all.
59:28 Remember that, because percy is gonna have thousands by the end of season 5. 😂 1:01:57 If you listen closely, percy just sang "consensus~" even though it was not the lyrics. means he doesn't know the rest.

Ooh, a solo reaction. That's a cool change of pace.
They’ve done a few!
Your immediate distrust of Luke was so valid lmao
He's got good instincts, every other reactor I've watched has been like "Aw, Luke's so nice!" lol
I don't know why my brain assumed you were reacting to the books on screen, like a reading marathon. This is cool, too, though.
You’re probably not used to it being in visual media.
Now I want them to do a group reading of the Percy Jackson books
I'd be all for a book marathon. And have them compare the books with the show and the movie.
The kid playing Percy is Walker Scobell who played a younger Ryan Reynolds in The Adam Project.
you can really feel Ryan's influence in Walker's acting, and it's absolute perfection for Percy

Yes they got a bigger budget , season 1 had a budget even smaller than the first movie .
Like the Harry Potter books are based on each year at Hogwarts, Percy Jackson books are primarily based on each summer for “camp” time.

This adaptation nailed the real beef Percy has with the gods
The true form is a mythological thing, if a mortal looks at it, they're straight up disintegrated.
