I wasn't planning on doing episode 4 of my Winners and Losers series, until I came up with this idea. Something I thought was a little different, and could be interesting, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Originally I was worried it was too soon after the last episode, only to discover the 3rd one was in 2017! How time flies.
So I hope everyone likes the new episode, it was a lot of fun to make, and has given me about 50 new places that are on my bucket list! There are so many stunning locations I had never even heard of.
Once again, this video is sponsored by the awesome CuriosityStream. Sign up for a 31-day free trial at curiositystream.com/wonderwhy and enter the promo code "wonderwhy". Fun Fact: Mexico City has 6 different places considered World Heritage Site inside the city, in an area of less than 800 km2 making it probably one of the places with more density of world heritage sites in the world.
    -Mexico City Historic Center
    -Xochimilco
    -Ancient City of Teotihuacán
    -UNAM Campus
    -Luis Barragán House and Studio
-The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro
There are also two more places that have already been presented to the UNESCO and are in process to be considered a World Heritage Site:
    -Chapultepec Forest, Hill and Castle
-Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo House and Studio
With this we would have 8 different World Heritage Site declarations in the same city, the same amount as whole countries like Hungary, Finland or Sri Lanka, and just to sites ahead of the Netherlands or Denmark...in the same city.
By the way, rhe Luis Barragan House is also one of the smallest heritage places in the world,as it is also an individual house.

There is inherent bias in selection of UNESCO sites thats the reason most of it is Europe and North America. Asian countries have lot of other historical and cultural sites that are much older and beautiful than some listed sites that don't even come close to these sites. The World Heritage Committee is based out of Paris, France. It has held 42 annual sessions till now, with a 43rd in 2019 . Of these, 3 have been held in Africa and Australia each, 4 in North America, 5 in South America, 6 in Asia, and 22 in Europe.
In fact, Paris has hosted the annual committee meetings more time than any of the other continents (9).
And this does have an impact on the selection in that year.
In 1997, the France was the host of the extraordinary session. In that year, 46 new heritage sites were added to the list, of which 10 were in the host country of France.
There are many things wrong with the way the committee is selected, the process by which nominated sites are shortlisted, the distribution of sites by region and culture, and so on.
There are 4 times as many cultural sites than natural, which favors Europe as opposed to Asia since the Renaissance movement in the Middle ages is studied and discussed far more than it should be, while more ancient cultures like Egypt, India, China are usually glossed over
. Both China and India alone hold more than many cultural sites but only few are listed unlike Europe.
The Asia Pacific region is home to half the world’s population but only makes up 23% of the sites
Whereas Europe with 10% of the world’s population claims to be home to more than 40% of the world’s cultural hotspots
It’s the age-old question of “who watches the watchmen?”.

You seem to forget one important detail, while indeed a site must fit one of the conditions set from the UNESCO to become a World Heritage, another important part is how determined is the host country to maintain and preserve it, thus, for example, despite Africa having probably a lot more potential Natural Sites than Europe, most countries can't or won't preserve them, so they just don't submit them.

If i recall correctly, someone has to Nominate a site to be considered vy UNESCO (usually the government of said country) which then has to show will to actually be included on the list.
So if we take Japan for example, there is no doupt about their beautiful medieval architecture but doe the Japanese government press on UNESCO to add them to the list?
As someone who is from a smaller European country I remember the government pressing on UNESCO to add a site which was being considered for several years.

Agreed. Honestly it's no wonder china is on top as that great wall saved them from what happened and is happening in the middle east, and some parts of Europe, which if wars ever stop and the issue of heritage sites becomes more relevant there, the area will rise to this list because of Mesopotamia and the heavy religious history. Also, Japan is 100s of islands in the ocean so that helped them a lot. which's why the definition is so strict in these countries; they can't add everything that's old as it will make the main things less appealing

I usually do not suggest such things, but I really think UNESCO has a heavy Euro-bias. Case in point: look at the reaction to Notre Dame fire compared to the reaction to the destruction of Palmyra or Sanaa. In my country, you cannot take two steps without stumbling upon something ancient (much of which is barely even visited or maintained for that matter). And it is the same all across Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Mideast.

Even though I live in Italy, I still think that other counrties should have their monuments or other artistic stuff in the list of sites. Unesco is mostly like this because they started in europe, now, that they've finished listing all the ones in europe, they're starting on other countries, it's a long process, since, recently they list the ancient city of babylonia as one. even for europe it was pretty slow, there's lots of paperwork to do, but I'm sure that in the furure they'll arrive to listing your country
