I remember being around 9 or 10 when the first episode of this series came out. Really helped me grow my interest in geography! Happy to see you’re still working on these kind of videos, too! Your channel is a prime example of quality over quantity.
Some of the sources raised eyebrows, especially the ones that discuss public transportation. I personally lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Toronto. Also go to NYC and London quite often. I disagree with how they say HK has better public transportation compared to Tokyo but still understand it. But Toronto better than Tokyo for public transits ? That’s just not gonna be true in 100 years.
Tokyo might be over crowded to hell , but its such a beautiful and efficient city, its like one of the most perfect big cities there is. Im so sad as an American that we cant even have infrastructure in big cities as advanced as Japan, Korea and China. Proper structuring, effective crime reduction, effective cleaning programs and public transportation that links smaller areas to larger hubs, takes years to get even a fraction of any of that over here
Considering its size and density it’s amazing that Tokyo is so safe. I have been there a few times and have never felt threatened by anything or anyone. Wonderful city. And the most Michelin stars ⭐️
@@ashutoshyadav7385 Though unfortunate and heart-wrenching that case took place 34 years ago, so I don’t really think that contests Tokyo’s unparalleled safeness
Regardless of the picture used for show São Paulo is actually from Santos (a important costal city in the state of São Paulo) this video is really great. I wasn't notified about this one but I'm very happy that we had our cities video. Thank you WonderWhy
Fun fact: the region with the highest Michelin stars per capita is Spain’s Basque Country (33 stars for a 3.1 million population, 1 per 94.000 inhabs). Go to San Sebastian or anywhere else in Euskadi and you’ll be amazed. And I am not Basque myself, but these guys are the best foodies.

Hi Kazooya here, as always great video and I'm always looking forward to more. Also I get to hear the lovely sounds of Dhaka's traffic again which is always appreciated ;)
10:05Side Note: They’re aren’t particularly that many kangaroos on kangaroo island. It was named this because an explorer went atop a hill and saw many kangaroos. However, that was just a coincidence.
I'm honestly shocked that Tokyo is only at #7 at best public transit... Having used it on multiple trips I'm always massively impressed. Should be a huge indicator at how good the top 5 are.
Tokyo suffers because of closing very early (New York is 24/7 for a decent amount of the network), and having a segmented network. In terms of actual connectivity Tokyo is second to none, but that’s not the only measure of excellency for transit.
Considering he said it has a population of 37 million, he's including all of these prefectures in his definition of Tokyo: Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Tochigi, Gunma, Ibaraki, Yamanashi. And if you include all of those places that aren't Tokyo, public transit isn't so amazing (still good though).
I would look at it from the opposite way and consider that chart/source completely untrustworthy. I personally lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Toronto. I disagree with how they say HK has better public transportation compared to Tokyo but still understand it. Toronto better than Tokyo? That’s just not gonna be true in 100 years.
@@jhca4671 Yes, it is amazing if you're actually talking about Tokyo. But if you're talking about all those places around Tokyo which are not Tokyo, it's not amazing anymore.

For crime, the homicide rate has a massive correlation with the availability of weapons/ guns. Also worth mentioning that Mexico is suffering an ongoing 15-year drug war, like a de facto civil war, with 85,000 casualties so far and counting.
To be honest when your videos pop up sometimes I forget I'm still subscribed from years ago but then once I watch I instantly remember how high quality your vids are and why I subbed.
An important thing to remember when it comes to cities with the highest homicide rate is that they are all from country's with a police force developed enough to take down such data. Cities like Mogadishu, Damascus, Baghdad, etc. would be much more dangerous as a whole.
It annoys me when studies conflate "unsafe" with "violent crime." Far more people die or are seriously injured in car accidents than from violent crime. The safest cities in the world are probably those with the fewest drivers on the road.
I’m surprised that we didn’t feature more in the livability rankings. A few years ago there were a number of rankings that would switch between Sydney and Melbourne for the top spot.
@@lamsmiley1944 Most of those liveability rankings hammered Melbourne and Sydney due to COVID and Australia's lockdowns hahah give it another year and Melbourne will likely be up the top again
I’m more surprised about Japan. Their population is pretty large when comparing to European countries but still consistently ranks amongst the best in rankings. Pretty insane if you ask me.
Just a heads up, Pateros is legally not a city, but a municipality, though could become one legally. There are laws and criteria for how a municipality should become a city, this includes the balance of: Land, Population, and Economy, likewise this criteria also suits for the creation of Provinces, Municipalities, Barangays (barrios), and other formal and informal divisions. I just feel like Pateros falls on the economy part though. It is also the smallest in terms of land, somewhere in between 1-2 km2.
I love that this show has started to develop recurring gags like "if the entire world population lived as densely as ___ then we could all fit into ___"
Fun fact, more kangaroos live in Australia, than humans do... even though that is counting the total population of 4 species of kangaroos and combining them together, while there is just one human species. In total, there are 26 million humans and 46 million kangaroos, that live in Australia.

Russian, from Moscow here. The "top 5 safest cities" is particularly funny in omitting mine. A Canadian here, in the comments to a urban cycling related video, once admitted he only had 5 bicycles stolen in his life, which he consideres lucky and safe. Just to let you know: i got no bicycle stolen whatsoever. I'm constantly doing crazy things like forgetting to strap on my bike to a pole for couple hours, leaving my gopro just hanging in the wardrobe, leaving the car unlocked and sometimes running (i.e. with they key in) unattended. Yeah I live in Beijing and walk around late at night with no fear, same for riding the subway or leaving stuff at my table while going to the bathroom at cafes. Love it; couldn't do this in big US cities (I'm from the US).
moscow seems ike another country compare to the rest of your country ... the system russia has in place basically is one of the most centralized countries i have ever seen it reminds of mexico , everthing went to the capital city while forgetting the rest of the country even exist /// thats not good for the economy is better to have power more distribute around all the country i know russia is massive but i have seen your inner cities and to be absolutely honest they seem like third world cities , to be fair i live in one the best places in latinamerica but if you compare the cities of my country with cities of yours , russia will not only be economically dissapointing but also infrastructurely is mediocre , but i have to take my hat off and congratulate you moscowvite ,you people from moscow really knows how to have a huge area of the world under your foot, like a vassal .. i play geogussr i have seen quite a bit .

I clicked on the video hoping for my city to show up (Vancouver) and when looking at the chapters I was fairly certain Vancouver would make the list for most liveable, though housing is expensive
As someone who used to live in Toronto, I have a hard time believing that it's the second safest city in the world lol. I was under the impression it was the least safe city in Canada, though that might just be in terms of murder rates.
I was surprised to see it at 2nd as well, but what you thought about it relative to Canada is a misconception that so many Canadians have. Toronto is nowhere close to being the most dangerous or least safe city in Canada in terms of crime or murder specifically, whether it's all towns and cities or just major cities. Most of those places are out west. And for Ontario, it's up north.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Maybe you Canadians see Toronto as being a dangerous city, but as an American, I'm shocked that major cities can even be that safe.
WonderWhy! Happy New Year!!! I am so excited to see another one of your videos. I have been watching them for years now and can’t wait to watch this. Take care bro :) from NZ
Damn my city is worse then I thought huh. I live in Delhi and since the pollution here improved a lot compared to mid 2010s I thought we were fine but I guess not. hopefully someday my city also becomes a world class city especially like Tokyo since it proves that just because a city has a large population doesn't mean that it cant become a top tier city.
Well, none of today's environmentalist activists would risk causing offence to Indian/Chinese/Pakistani countries because their populations are mostly not white and they're afraid of looking racist. So I think you're safe from any scrutiny, the US and UK are just going to be blamed for most of it as usual
Nice video! Just wanted to point out that the image for São Paulo isn’t the city of São Paulo. It’s kinda like New York, there’s the state and there’s a city with the same name. The picture you showed is of a city called Santos, in the coast of the state, São Paulo (city) is up further north.
@@rrsharizam Not really. But regardless, they are not Tokyo and you shouldn't include their population when you're talking about the population of Tokyo. If you want to talk about the Greater Tokyo Area, then say the Greater Tokyo Area, but it ain't Tokyo.
3:08 actually Sydney being the largest city is disputed because of the arbitrariness of the city limits. If Central Coast is included in the Sydney Area, then Geelong, which is much closer to Melbourne should be included too, which would make Melbourne the largest city. and if neither were included then Melbourne would be more populated as well, though by only a few thousands
@@IOwnKazakhstan sorry to clarify the central coast *is* included in sydney’s official Greater City Area and Geelong isnt included in Melbourne’s despite being closer together
Tokyo proper (as in the prefecture of Tokyo) is kind of a confusing place; half of it is a city whilst the other half are mountains and forests and some tropical islands. So when talking about Tokyo, as in the metropolitan area, we usually include other cities like Yokohama (population: 3 M), Chiba (978K), and Saitama (1M), which are all humungous cities in their own regards. Thanks to great public transport and close proximity all cities function pretty much as one, but when considering how many cities and people were shoved into this tiny space, I can't help but wonder how Tokyo was able to persist.
About 94% of Hong Kong is countryside - if you count urban area only (60sq km, about the size of Manhattan) it becomes the world's densest place, with 125,000 per sq km. It's approximately 3x the built density/ average building height of NYC
If you do another episode, I think it'd be cool if you compared 'territories' of the world; things like Puerto Rico, BIOT, Norfolk Island, etc. Basically, places that aren't considered to be countries, but aren't full parts of whichever country they're in They can be interesting little (or big) things and it seems like a topic that may fit well with Winners and Losers
7:22 Nobody said anything about "overcrowded", these cities are just *crowded*. The point of cities is to have a lot of people in close proximity to one-another.
Happy New Year! Wishing everyone all the best for 2023!

* - Almost fergot. Ok, 20 years ago my mom got her car hijacked, and 10 years ago another unsuccessfull attempt.
@@rioluna6058 You probably know our country by means of internet.
@@bukkaratsuppa6414 of course russia will be the in the bracket of the last 30 countries i visit if had a chance . up there with iran , north korea, eritrea , democratic republic of congo south africa , venezuela and among all of those there is russia
16:19 the moment I saw D.C. and NYC on that list for safest I had to laugh as someone who been to both
don't take it seriously. This data won't make changes to the fact.
its been a while and definitely worth it!
I clicked on the video hoping for my city to show up (Vancouver) and when looking at the chapters I was fairly certain Vancouver would make the list for most liveable, though housing is expensive
I was just in Vancouver for 3 days until yesterday! Amazing place to live, scenery looks beautiful, great food.
18:01 also, all of the Australian entries on this list are cities/towns in Tasmania, which has the cleanest air and water in the country :)
Nothing better than a WonderWhy upload at the start of the year!
THE SERIES IS BACK!
Ep. 6 Suggestion: National Parks
As someone who used to live in Toronto, I have a hard time believing that it's the second safest city in the world lol. I was under the impression it was the least safe city in Canada, though that might just be in terms of murder rates.
Was looking for this comment, murders and petty crimes are almost daily occurrences here nowadays.
@@finiavanamandresy5460 That's what I thought. I'd think somewhere in Europe is safer
@@alanj.5897 Fr. I lived in one of the most dangerous parts of Toronto and I saw little to no violent crime.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Maybe you Canadians see Toronto as being a dangerous city, but as an American, I'm shocked that major cities can even be that safe.
wow, the guy that got me into geography all those years ago posting a new video, awesome !
WonderWhy! Happy New Year!!! I am so excited to see another one of your videos. I have been watching them for years now and can’t wait to watch this. Take care bro :) from NZ
Mate’s back with the path of the goblin king
Don't suprise India is Polluted everyone knows it 🤣
@anv Yeah Mumbai is just like San Fransisco
Still better than Delhi ig
Indian Villages are better than the cities.
Mentality bro mentality. Need to dicipline their mentality first then follow with others.
Nice video! Just wanted to point out that the image for São Paulo isn’t the city of São Paulo. It’s kinda like New York, there’s the state and there’s a city with the same name. The picture you showed is of a city called Santos, in the coast of the state, São Paulo (city) is up further north.
Man, its pretty wild that Tokyo has a slightly smaller population than my entire country of Canada
It doesn't. He's including multiple prefectures and other major cities that are close to Tokyo. The actual population is 10 million.
@@ketchup901 because those prefectures are urbanised and connected to Tokyo
@@rrsharizam Not really. But regardless, they are not Tokyo and you shouldn't include their population when you're talking about the population of Tokyo. If you want to talk about the Greater Tokyo Area, then say the Greater Tokyo Area, but it ain't Tokyo.
yep, NY has only 8.5M population😂😂
Shoutout to "Albarat dels Tarongers", a random village in Valencia, Spain, which has one of the best air qualities lol
3:08 actually Sydney being the largest city is disputed because of the arbitrariness of the city limits. If Central Coast is included in the Sydney Area, then Geelong, which is much closer to Melbourne should be included too, which would make Melbourne the largest city. and if neither were included then Melbourne would be more populated as well, though by only a few thousands
idk why you would count central coast as part of sydney and geelong as part of melbourne but I kinda get what you're saying.
@@IOwnKazakhstan sorry to clarify the central coast *is* included in sydney’s official Greater City Area and Geelong isnt included in Melbourne’s despite being closer together
Immediate click, happy to see the series back
I imagine all the cities with the worst public transport were all in the U.S.
Great video with a lot of informative stuffs! A little correction tho, 22:41 Singapore is in South East Asia not East Asia
Tokyo Propper isn't Tokyo Prefecture, Tokyo Propper is the 23 wards of Tokyo (28% of the Prefecture's land area and 69% of the population)
Some lists are kinda strange. Not sure how Barcelona ranks above Zurich in security and Kuala Lumpur above Tokyo in environmental security
it amazed me how tokyo is the biggest population and also the biggest developed
I love this channel. It’s one of the only non English channels i watch, but turning on English subtitles is worth it for this info.
About 94% of Hong Kong is countryside - if you count urban area only (60sq km, about the size of Manhattan) it becomes the world's densest place, with 125,000 per sq km. It's approximately 3x the built density/ average building height of NYC
@unknownツ Because HK is not unlike other cities - it includes 76-94% of countryside
If you do another episode, I think it'd be cool if you compared 'territories' of the world; things like Puerto Rico, BIOT, Norfolk Island, etc.
Basically, places that aren't considered to be countries, but aren't full parts of whichever country they're in
They can be interesting little (or big) things and it seems like a topic that may fit well with Winners and Losers
I hope there will be more episodes this year!!!
Really happy to see you back!
So excited to find out about "settees".
Happy new year wonder why! I am a big fan of your channel. Next; please do continents OR Islands.
Toronto as the second safest city is crazy
7:22 Nobody said anything about "overcrowded", these cities are just *crowded*. The point of cities is to have a lot of people in close proximity to one-another.
