      I always feel like this difference is some kind of poetic license from the directors. In Victor Hugo's book Quasimodo is deaf, so like most of deaf people he wouldn't talk at all, and if he tried, he'd probably talk this way that is very common to hear deaf people speaking. So, when he's singing, the voice that comes out it's probably the way that the voice goes in his head, not the way others will hear it. Like if he's thinking, but out loud, idk. Anyway, this is what I think, don't know if it's the actual purpose of why the directors did it this way.

    Their Flight into Egypt really did last their whole life long. Esmeralda dies at the end of the show because of smoke inhalation and Quasimoto is so distraught that in the book he lays by her grave and refuses to leave her so he died of starvation.

      I would have ordered the Publishers, to re-write the book, so that a grave-resting Quazimodo, is saved, by a lovely, Hunchbacked woman, with a beautiful singing voice!🙂.

      For me it’s actually heartbreaking considering that him being her protector is probably the closest he’d ever come to a romantic relationship with her. Even in death he protected her with his embrace until their skeletons crumbled away and omg writing this out gave me so many emotions.

    You have to save her!
    Save her? Me?
    Oh, what's the matter? Are you afraid?
    Of course he's afraid! And he should be!
    But that's what makes you a hero-doing what you're afraid of!
    A hero, or a saint!
    You mean like saint... saint... what's your name again?
    Saint Aphrodisius
    The Bishop of Beziers
    I was beheaded by
    A mob in Place Saint-Cyr
    And though I made a choice
    I did not know would bring
    My grizzly modering
    I wouldn't change a thing
    For I kept safe and free
    The holy family
    On that flight into Egypt
    Land of the date and palm
    I offered shelter
    To her who is Notre Dame
    And if that's what I could do
    Then Quasimodo, you can too
    But even if I could go out there-how can I find her?
    The amulet she gave you!
    But what is it? Just a web and a jewel!
    It doesn't mean anything!
    No, it must be a clue made with guile and art
    And she gave it to you because she knows you're smart
    Think, Quasimodo, is it hopeless
    Or can you see in it something you've seen before?
    Seen before... wait, I know this! Look,
    At this line, that's a bridge, that's a street-and this jewel-
    It must show where we're supposed to meet
    You've done it, Quasimodo
    This we're certain of
    It's a map! It's a map!
    Look-
    It's the city scene from above
    It's a map of the city from above
    I'll do it! I'll go out there while it's
    Dark, I'll find Esmeralda, and bring her back!
    Just like the angel
    Who warned Joseph he must flee
    I'll save Esmeralda
    Her angel will be me
    I'll give her sanctuary
    Somewhere safe to hide
    Protected at my side
    A little like a bride
    Like saints in stone and song
    For her I will be strong
    And your flight into Egypt
    May last your whole life long
    Yes, your flight into Egypt
    Will last-
    -Our whole life long

    I don't know why but I feel like Michael Arden is so good, he outshines and outsings the entire crowd all by himself. One voice to silence them all
    Also, is it just me or does St Aphrodite sound like Clopin. I haven't watched the musical yet but I'm willing to bet that is his voice

    Man. Really sad that he never did get the girl. He's such a kind sweet soul. I mean it is realistic and he didn't let it get him down. He still did pay her back for her kindness and compassion, so he was/will be fine after the conclusion to all of it. Kind of poetic how he experienced so many firsts in all this. Love, shame, revilement, destitution, compassion, friendship, fear, excitement, freedom and heart break. Quasi is such a great guy.

    I hate this Quasi's raspy speaking voice although I understand why they did it and I love his singing voice, but this had always been my favorite Disney movie with my favorite soundtrack and Tom Hulce was just perfect in every way for the role.
    I miss that actor. I wish he could've done this song.

      I love Tom Hulce as Quasimodo but Arden is a perfect Broadway-caliber Quasimodo

    • @Tarynntism
      @Tarynntism 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree, I also dislike the raspy voice. Quasimodo’s voice was so sweet and gentle in the animated film. However both Hulce and Arden breathe so much life into Quasi’s singing voice and I’m often going back and forth relentlessly on which versions I prefer. The songs are just absolutely genius

    • @snapmyneck8818
      @snapmyneck8818 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's said the actor did the raspy voice because he wanted to portray how Quasi was deaf (like in the book).

      Quasimodo has progressive hearing loss from the bells, if he learned to speak before he lost his hearing it wouldn’t affect how his voice sounds

    This is really jarring for some reason. I just feel like the line is weird, I dunno

    • @christinebainbridge8774
      @christinebainbridge8774 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I actually think it's clever, because what Quasi really wants to believe is "And she gave it to you because she knows your heart", but he's not confident enough to vocalize it to himself, he doesn't want to commit to that line of thought only to be let down, and thus, "because she knows you're smart".
      He desperately wants it to be love, and so 'because she knows you're smart' is actually a self-deprecation, since a part of him doesn't think he deserves love. You can hear the lyric start to go there... and then divert. Because Quasi is covering up what he truly feels, the lyric seems forced and simple, to clue in the listener and to convey Quasi's inner misery.
      ...Ah, unless you meant the 'guile and art' line. Yeah, that felt off to me, too. It's more of a Frollo sort of phrasing, so maaaybe that's why it feels intrusive?

    Can someone who has seen the musical can explain where this song is from and what's it about?

    • @juliebrehove6775
      @juliebrehove6775 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      If you've seen the 1995 animated movie, this song is used in the part of the story where the gargoyles sing "A Guy Like You." It serves the same purpose--to build up Quasimodo's confidence--but this song fits more in line with the darker, more ecclesiastical tone of the rest of the stage show and the novel upon which it's based. In the musical, Quasimodo's friends are the saint statues high in the belltower of Notre Dame, not the gargoyles. So they're trying to encourage Quasimodo to be brave and protect Esmeralda from Frollo's obsession.

    • @ShaharHarshuv
      @ShaharHarshuv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      so what does that have to do with "Flight to Egypt"

    • @juliebrehove6775
      @juliebrehove6775 7 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Since this show takes place within the devoutly Roman Catholic France of the 16th century, religious references tend to be within Catholic doctrine. In the Bible, after the Child Jesus was born, his foster father, St. Joseph, the husband of Mary, had a dream where an angel warned him to take his family and flee to Egypt where they'd be safe. King Herod, jealous of the talk of a great King being born in his city, ordered all male children under the age of 2 to be killed. Because of this dream, the baby Jesus was spared. In French Catholic legend, St. Aphrodisius was a holy man who helped to hide the Holy Family while they were in Egypt and later became a bishop in France. The song uses biblical allusion because that's all Quasimodo understands of the world outside. So just as the Angel and St. Aphrodisius saved the Holy Family, Quasimodo wants to save Esmeralda from Frollo. Hope that makes sense!

      Given the line about "protecting the Holy family", I presume St. Aphrodisius protected Jesus' family during their flight from Herod the Great. According to Matthew, Herod had all the babies under a certain age slaughtered to eliminate a potential challenge to the "throne". They fled to Egypt. (Matthew 2: 16-18)

    • @laurenberry7750
      @laurenberry7750 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      It's a metaphor. Earlier in the show, Quasimodo learns about St. Aphrodisius and how he helped keep Mary, Joseph, and Jesus safe when they fled into Egypt to avoid danger. Here, the "flight into Egypt" refers to a journey to save someone. This song is about persuading Quasimodo that he can be like St. Aphrodisius and save Esmeralda from harm.
