To anyone looking to get a ham radio (you need a licence btw) That's the ISS repeater. You're not actually speaking to an astronaut although sometimes they do get on the air. The repeater allows your signal to be retransmitted so that you can talk to people further away than normal on that frequency. It's a fun hobby but you need to understand you won't buy a $25 HT and immediately be talking to astronauts! 😅
Yeah my buddy just got his Technician at HOPE XV in Queens, NYC and I plan to go for it with my daughter real soon. Since you posted a year ago now, have you obtained your general and or extra yet?
These sats hear you a lot better than you hear them. Because of practices like this, the poor FM repeater on the ISS is unusable most time. It just kerchunks the whole time.
This is actually pretty cool, the extent of my use with radios is working in security where’s its all short range between departments. A co worker shined a light on the entire thing and holy crap this is really cool
Did you just use your handheld? I’m looking into contacting the ISS but it seems like every resource is saying I have to build some crazy antenna setup.
You need a license to transmit (talk) but you can receive (listen) without a license. Getting a license is easy, you just need to know how to operate a amateur radio
hey what is the uplink frequency you used? Google says the downlink is 145.800, but its gives two different uplink frequencies. which one did you use in this video? thanks
I’m 19 and just getting interested in radio and wanting to start with MURS since I don’t have a license, and you did such a tremendous job explaining everything in a way I fully understood. I bought this handheld and hope to get a GMRS license and HAM in the future.
I’m studying to get my tech for emergency use but I don’t see the excitement in HAM. I grew up watching my dad call in every night. It was like a roll call or something. Boring AF
