When I lived in a one bedroom apartment, my stash was everywhere. I started to get a grip and did so by investing in the plastic boxes that go under the bed. It was a long, tedious process but I measured the yardage and folded it to fit the boxes (long and skinny pieces). I took a small snip of fabric from each order and glued it to an index card and noted the yardage amount by the piece. I then taped the card(s) on the end. I can now see what is in each box, just by looking at the ends under the bed. It has sure saves me a lot of time when I know I have a certain fabric I want to use and now it only takes a few minutes instead of a few hours to find it. Love your show. Di

When I learned to quilt, I was still living with my mom. I had my bedroom and that’s it. I kept my stash almost nonexistent because I literally didn’t have anywhere to keep it and did my quilting on the coffee table in the living room. The sewing stuff was put away every day.
When I moved into my first apartment, my (now) husband and I shared the 2nd bedroom as a computer lab/quilt space. His server rack, desk, cables, etc were on one side, and my sewing table was on the other. I kept my stash in a dresser in our bedroom. My design wall was the floor in the living room downstairs. I worked on one project at a time because there wasn’t room for more.
Now that my husband and I have bought a house, his office is in one room, my sewing space is in another room that’s about 9x11. Do I wish I had more space? Absolutely. But I’m learning that keeping my stash small enough to fit nicely in the space designated, and keeping the area a little tidier is really helpful for making it feel nice. My project bins all match each other, almost all my furniture does too, and I’ve invested in good lighting which is a game changer.

Just moved into a two bedroom senior apartment since my husband passed. Made the 2nd bedroom my living room, the living room is my sewing room and the two “extra” closets store my fabrics. Great show today Pat. Happy Thanksgiving everyone ❤

My sewing space is basically 6 1/2 square. It’s in the inner corner of a spare bedroom. In that corner one window that’s to the left side, second one in front of my cutting table. My sewing table butts up against my cutting table and behind me to my right is a dresser full of fabric with a ironing station on the top. A design wall beside the dresser. My sewing table butts up to a double bed, a perfect place for my quilt to fall onto. This is my perfect triangle sewing space that suit me perfectly.

Once in a while look at your space critically. What do you not use often-put it in a closet. If you never use it-get rid of it. Did you see something another quilter did-incorporate it in your spot. Your space grows with you and changes over time. Enjoy the journey!❤

I really felt bad for the gal that wrote the question about not having a nice, big and more fancy sewing room. Her question probably has been experienced by so many of us and I just wanted her to know she is not alone...I started sewing with my machine on a small table in our not so huge bedroom...no place to cut and the ironing board was on the other side of the bed...had to roll or crawl over the bed to press. It was awful, but I sewed clothes then not quilts. We were a military family so my sewing space changed every 2 years...one place I set up my machine in the small room with the washer/dryer and water heater! Just do with what you have now matter if it's a corner of a room or a closet.

I "move" south every fall. I have to be very organized there is no storage and I am limited about how many projects i bring. I spend the month of October organizing my northern garret and pick projects to head south with and putting every thing away in the garret, which is a large room in our two story garage. I've been doing this for 11 years now. I have my orginizationskills down pat.

My husband made me take my dining room as a craft/sewing room.
We very rarely use it. The whole family is here 3/4 times a year.
    It is wonderful.
I agree with you with the cohesiveness. I made the mistake and painted my sewing room pink. It was supposed to be mauve, but oh well.
I have all kinds of unique baskets and things in containers and they’re really just in the way

QUESTION!! Pat, what do with all of your patterns when you are done making the quilt?? For instance, the Cluck Cluck Sew pattern with the mini pumpkins?? Do you keep them in a file, recycle them, give them away?? I’m never sure what to do with these purchased patterns!!

I had a craft room and then converted a very small bedroom into my sewing room. I use the sewing room so much more so come January its going to flip, much to my husband's dismay. In the past I always had a corner or closet for sewing and crafts now I am very fortunate to have 2 small rooms. Its how I organized everything. I bought a label maker and that helped tremendously.

I have some input on the smaller sewing space and how I dealt with it - my husband and I live in a 2 bedroom apartment. We are both very crafty people and noticed that we were not spending a lot of time in our living room/dining room area. I used to dining room table for my sewing, but we didn't like working in separate areas when we were crafty, so we actually moved our office/crafting stuff into our living room, moved all the living room furniture into our old office area and now just have the biggest area in our apartment as the crafty/office area instead of a traditional living room. We are still able to watch TV/relax on the couch when we want, it's just in a bedroom now, but we don't need a lot of space for that. It has helped a lot! We moved the dining room table into the living room and have our desks on opposite walls. I was able to put up a design wall and can just turn around from my computer to sew. It's worked out great so far.

I would love it if all my bookcases were white, have thought about painting them, but so far it isn't on my bucket list. I put two, side by side and covered the backsides with batting and use it as a design wall. It works great except that I can't stand very far back and lighting could be better. One thing I learned is to keep surfaces clean and empty, clutter grows if I leave anything out. Also, my boss's favorite expression was "Touch it Once" which is a life-changer if you concentrate on that alone. Thank you Pat, great discussion today, Happy Thanksgiving.

A declutering book I read stated that touch it once rule. I try to adhere to that with my mail pile. It still tends to fill a basket, "Oh, I'll look into that tomorrow." And it piles up fast. Touch it and put it where it needs to go 🙂

To Kathy, regarding the small amount of space she has for her creations. I live in an apartment for seniors. It has two bedrooms but the second one is quite small. I have my sewing machine on a sewing table in my bedroom set up by the two windows. Next to that is a small shelf to keep my thread handy and other small items I use in that room. I make my bed every day. I cannot sew if my bed isn’t made because it makes things too stressful for me. My bedroom is done in blues and greens which also helps to relax. My cutting table is in my living room. When company is coming, I put the leafs down and when they leave I go back to using the table for what it is made for. My second bedroom is where I keep my fabric in my armoire, carefully wrapped around comic book boards. My fat quarters are in bins with covers that I bought at Dollar Tree for $1.25 each. I also have a desk with my laptop and printer in there. My panels are hanging in the closet using skirt hangers to save space. Good luck to you and have a good Turkey 🦃 Day!!!

About basements {Do't ask why I know...} DON'T store fabric directly on the basement floor. Use pallets you can get for free, even for plastic totes. Does your basement flood, if so how much. Then shelves will work better. It can be wonderful as they are usually large!!!

Great advice! If I’m finding that I’m needing more storage, I look at what it is I’m storing. Do I need it? Or do I just need to use it up? Or give it away? I love my rolling assistants. I have 3 that suit me well. But I have since bought 3 more and I’m not using two of them. I will probably gift them. I want to spread out and get some projects out and going. What am I thinking? I need to finish one project at a time and then keep reducing my stash. I keep telling hubby, no more fabric. He’s such an enabler. lol. I love patterns. And if you love it you have to buy it. It could be hard to come by later. But keeping them in the open is key. This will feed your creative mind to make these quilts/sewing pieces. Good luck to you all and me. Please post your progress. I love organization ❤️. Thanks Pat!!

So much fabulous information Pat!!! You have so much knowledge!! My sewing space is in our bedroom. One corner with my sewing machine against the wall, my cutting table next to it sitting perpendicular to my sewing machine table. My ironing board sits in front of a desk and I put it away when I'm done. Thankfully we have a linen closet in the short hall leading to the master bath. I keep my fabric in that. At one time I wanted a designated sewing room. I'm disabled, and it wouldn't be financially possible for us to add a room on. When I start wishing for a sewing room, I picture the shacks our patients lived in when we were on a medical mission trip in Nicaragua. Remaining thankful for what I do have has helped a lot. For those that can't afford to purchase new furniture for their sewing room, but love the white furniture and cohesive look, which I do, you can always paint what you already have. Garage sales and thrift stores are great for finding bookshelves. Paint them whatever color you like and it saves a lot of money. Thank you Pat for all the time you give us.

I use file folder bins with the handles on the lids, and label the tabs as alphabetically as I can. I keep lots of downloaded and printed patterns this way. I have two of these folder hanger bins that fit under my work table. 😉

Ok, I guess I need to comment. I love fabric as much as the next quilter, I've also seen addiction up close and personal. I'm currently unloading my mother's house and as a 70 year old woman I am brought to tears by the amount of stash, the waste of money and the sadness of all this fabric going to waste. It has begun to deteriorate, it smells bad, and most of it is going to the dump. I think most of the viewers will find this as a downer, but my main point is, use it while you can, you really can't take it with you and if it takes money away from a healthy lifestyle, don't do it. That said, I keep my stash small, I have Pat as my lifestyle guru, and I sew every day.

Hi, I like all your answers to your questions, you really thought them through, thank you. I do have a suggestion for the donated book and notions; I understand that it costs quite a bit to post it to Canada and other countries, but what if you pay a portion and allow the winner to pay the balance if they’re willing? I know I would! I live in Canada and I never have the opportunity to participate in any draws from you or a lot of American companies, simply because of postage.

I make gifts for people and I do pretty well most of the time but sometimes I end up adding in gifts that I did not plan.. Often I tend to plan my Christmas gifts too late. But this year I am well on my way. Another thing I realized is to keep it limited not to plan too much otherwise with the holidays I really end up stressed. This year I making coasters. Next year I can do something else. I can also add in candy and nuts and small treats. This is for my children. I have a much better Christmas. If I have more ideas I can plan them for next Christmas. That takes the stress out of it.

Pat's Machine quilting book is available on Amazon Unlimited, plus many other quilting books.
I don't have a lot of wall space for putting up the notion/thread pegboards, so I use the cart like Pat has that says Sloan Zone for my tools and notions. I have the IKEA cart and I don't recall where I have the wire hanging baskets that hang on the sides. So, in the bottom, miscellaneous items, like lint rollers, a clapper, spray bottles, stuff for ironing and applique teflon sheets. The middle holds all my needles (machine, hand sewing), all the different types of pins, curved safety pins, pin cushions, sewing machine maintenance (brushes, oil), and fabric adhesives. I also got the dollar store small plastic caddies that fit over the top sides. In those I store measuring gauges & tapes, small tools like the purple thing, hemostats, tweezers, seam rippers, stiletto, and in the side hanging wire baskets, rulers, fabric markers, and miscellaneous items like small booklets for color wheels, the no math quilt booklet, small stuff. I use S hooks to hang large rulers on the cart.
On the top tray, I have a dollar store tray that is subdivided, and I put current project things on it, such as the sewing machine feet I will use, specialty ruler, pattern, threads, bobbins, fabric clips, pins, scissors & cutters, anything I will use only for that project, except fabric. I don't have to get up to get things from a wall or drawer and this doesn't clutter up the work surface. I only work one or two projects at a time. The cart spins around to get what I need or roll it to where I need it, such sit down hand sewing, cutting, or ironing. To me all the clutter is on the cart and not on work areas.

How much do you buy for a single background for a queen/king size bed quilt? I just decided to do a quilt with one background instead of scrappy and was shocked when I read on the pattern 8 yards. If I had been in a shop & said to myself that I'd like that for a background, I may have gotten 4 yards, I never would have bought 8.
