So, in this instance, Rig actually could have been Heimdall. And when the woman says they were all in the same bed, it was common for people to all sleep in the same bed, and while she likely thought it was her husband she was with, it could have been Rig. Thats why she didn't know. The Gods were known for doing that with mortals. Infamous for it even.

Historically when sharing a bed, that didn't mean the guest would be next to any of the females. Sharing a bed meant that the guest slept to one side of the male host, while the hosts family slept on the other. There would not be any chance of a pregnancy unless she got pregnant outside the bed.
Funny thing is, it was kinda common for Vikings to come home to children that weren't theirs by blood. But they shared the same mother and therefore were often considered part of the family, with their mother's husband being called father. However, if a woman flaunted or made obviously public her infidelity, she could be severely punished. For anyone confused, the confused looking man (Athelstan) is Christian and found the Norse traditions and customs strange. Also in these times when women were accused of adultery the husband was typically believed, and the wife punished (usually by death). This was likely the first time Athelstan had seen someone favor the wife in these circumstances since the husband could not show proof of her guilt outside of his own suspicions.
Also one of the Norse gods, Heimdall (sorry if I misspelled) would visit humans from time to time and would call himself Rig. He would travel and back then being hospitable to a traveler was a big deal. If one invited Rig into their home and he was pleased with their hospitality then he would give the people of that home blessings.
