Education and labelling are key. Are broccoli, cabbages, rice or green beans "expensive" in your country? For the price of 1 Big Mac I could feed a house of 6 with vegetables. What's expensive is high quality protein and fish but the cost of good ingredients is better than diabetes.
Yeah, but we need protein in our diets. I need more than veggies to power through my day. I have to start my day with eggs & fruit. I couldn't just eat the fruit or I'd be starving in an hour. Nuts are good for that too but can be expensive. I know everyone is different but I have to have protein.
Dont buy into that organic bs. Just get regular veggies and you will find it is super cheap. Dried rice and beans are cheap and if you can bake then you can have any kind of badass bread. It takes work but you are worth it as we all are. My sister loves her bread machine so even if you cant or dont want to bake you can make it work.
No. Not impossible. A person needs to retrain their habit/s. I did at beginning of covid ... first basically keto diet for 4, 5 months and lost about 45+ lbs. Have kept it off. True, some people have given me flak for encouraging whole foods over processed foods, even shut down the possibility of these processed foods causing health problems
You can eat real food, it's called go to the store, buy whole foods and cook it yourself. This is a lazy statement. You just somehow want healthy food you can stick in a microwave.
This happened to me over the 4th of July weekend. I went food shopping with my friend who was the host this year, and she kept saying I was "rich" or "only ate the good stuff. I explained to her that yeah, it's cheap now, but in 30 years, you'll be paying the hospital bills or dead. All I did was buy simple ingredient food. For example, she wanted blue bonnet "butter," and I said no, don't get that, and I picked up the store brand butter, and I showed her the label of what's ACTUALLY supposed to be butter. Just salt and cream, and she gave me this look 😒. All I could do was laugh about it. Same for the burgers, she picked out these crazy patties with like 15 ingredients that she couldn't even understand. I told her, "Put that back" and I turned around and grabbed a family size pack of 80/20 and I told her she's gonna love the smash burgers I'll make way better. She gave me that same look 😒. I think in an effort to save money people like her resort to those "foods" but they don't realize that real ACTUAL food is cheaper and better, they just have to learn how to prep and cook. The next day, she apologized to me because she thought she offended me. I felt really bad because there wasn't any reason to apologize. I just wanted everyone to eat better, even if it was just a holiday.
Yess! I have been in similar situations! I do eat real food lol I value what I eat over people’s opinions of me, thankfully, but people will automatically call you orthorexic for not wanting to eat ultra processed foods or things banned in other countries! 🙄
Overpopulation and an increasing consumerism lifestyle depleted our naturally grown resources that caused the rise in prices...allowing food industries to take advantage to be incentivize in creating more ultraprocessed junk to feed the masses, regardless of public health
The problem isn't that whole foods need to be cheaper... it's that people need to place greater value on their health. People need to stop thinking of the cheaper stuff as "food". If you compare them by nutritional value and the cost of eventual healthcare you'll see that the "cheaper" food isn't actually cheaper. You're paying less money because there's less "food" in what you're purchasing. Everything you can eat shouldn't be thought of as "food". Also, there used to be classes in school called "Home Economics". If you teach people how to use money effectively in regards to health and nutrition you'll have people who know how to acquire better value for their money and how to preserve and extend the value of what they purchase. My grandmother did it, as a widow, raising her grandchild and I never went hungry or had less than a full plate of food. Plus there was a network of family, relatives and neighbors and a garden tended to faithfully. There are many controllable variables to the home making equation that people today tend to ignore and focus on something "somebody else" should do to make things easier for them.

What's so frustrating about these "Ultra Processed Foods" is they were not always this horribly awful for you. They were still processed, but NOT to the levels they are today. Ultra processed, sugar laden, empty calorie foods start in childhood and lead to what we have now, a crisis of obesity that is so bad that we are Forced to give people extremely expensive weight loss medication’s that they must stay on for life and that have the possibility of bankrupting our healthcare system. These warnings have come too late unfortunately.
My Arizona brand tea says "100% natural" on the can, but looking at the ingredients it contains a blend of various black teas, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, and natural flavors, with no indication of which flavors they used. So in other words, added sugar and flavoring is considered 100% natural. 😐
Natural is a meaningless word in marketing. Unfortunately billion dollar networks of corporate lobbys threaten to pull funding if advertising is challenged.
The terms all natural, low sugar, low carb, low fat, healthy, whole grain, high fiber, with ingredients that dont back up that claim are all blatant lies and the companies know this. I agree with processed foods coming with health warnings. Companies should not be allowed to make false claims on a package. I guarantee the CEOs would refuse to eat it.
Including bread and yogurt? Deeming so many foods as ultraprocessed is an overly broad, vague categorization.... Should instead be based on the health of the additives used as well as amount of added sugar etc
That's the point of the video. Too much of the US food system is engineered in factories to make us sick. It's so pervasive because companies are really aggressive about selling us unhealthy food. If you read the ingredients labels looking for what the researcher described, even the bread and yogurt, you'll find tons of questionable ingredients. I only found one loaf of bread I'm comfortable buying at the store now and I completely stopped buying yogurt (I just make my own).
@@duckmercy11 Ah right so my organic, sprouted whole wheat bread I eat with tons of fibre and non-added vitamins and minerals is "ultra-processed" junk food right...?
It’s so frustrating buying food and being limited because nearly all basics like cottage cheese, almond milk, coconut milk, sour cream have emulsifiers. I make my own yogurt now using an instant pot, and it’s so easy, but the brand of cottage cheese I buy WITHOUT emulsifiers is twice as much. Same with almond milk. We should be paying extra for the added junk, not more to have it missing.
Instead of warning labels how about just getting these ingredients banned like in other countries.

Start growing

The TV reporter and his charts on screen provided more substantial information than the lady interviewed O_o

Very true, I was really confused when she starting talking😖

She sounds like she's reading a ChatGPT summary.
@@medium-old Actually, if you check ingredients on food packages, then you'll realise that what she's saying tends to be a good place to start. If the list is long for what looks like a simple product, just put it back. If there are words that take you a few minutes to be able to pronounce, then chances are that's not food. Another good marker is: if I made this would I have put these ingredients in it? or do I know where to buy all of the ingredients listed? The woman's delivery was not smooth, but not everyone is good at explaining. The reporter should have taken that into consideration and asked her the questions differently.
Completely agree! The “more than five ingredients” part was the most stupid thing I’ve heard, anyone who’s ever made soup, bolognese, stews from scratch knows they have more than five ingredients, heck, salads have more than five ingredients 🙄 I agree ultra-processed foods are terrible for your health, but this “expert” was awful.
YES! I've been saying this since 1970! When I worked in the hospital in the mid 70's I had many arguments with staff about hyper-processed foods. I was the only person on staff who didn't eat the hospital food and was constantly bringing up nutritional needs of our patients. I'm so happy that 50 years later finally medicine is embracing this. I hope people will take heed to the warning labels, especially children and pregnant women
Staying true to you intuition and gut feeling. Crazy how 40+ years later you were right.
Exactly. I love that you knew it & was trying for that long to change their minds. People only listen when science backs it up. Especially with peer reviewed sources.
The ultra processed stuff is not good. As Michael Polan wrote; “Eat food, mostly plants, not too much.”
50 years later…..
🙄
I'm so glad you advocated for them! It's a step in the right direction. Our voices are powerful and the more people that do that can make even more of a difference. When I was working in a recovery center, I was very adamant about them making sure the food they were buying were healthy. It wasn't always the case, but I brought up the types of ingredients and how it would affect their gut health as well as mental health. The reality is if they really wanted them to improve overall, then they would no longer be a customer. The thing is placing money over peoples lives is something America needs to work on. We would be thrive if given the opportunity as a society and within the community if they valued health.

The bread in the US does not deserve to be called that, it is closer to Cake then actual bread.

No, it should be taken off the market, if you need warning labels or ad bans, take it off the market.
Especially when they know it causes cancer.
Why remove the freedom of access? People should be free to choose, as long as it's an educated choice. No need to ban tobacco and alcohol either.
There are a lot of food additives that are banned in most other countries in the world but not here. The good thing is, the ingredients are listed so consumers can make an educated choice.

Wow. It only took 50 years...
The processed food company’s have been unregulated for far too long. This is a health crisis that has been increasing every decade since the 1950’s. Doctors need to be more educated on nutrition and less relying on drugs.

The curse of knowledge is a cognitive bias that occurs when an individual, who is communicating with others, assumes that others have information that is only available to themselves, assuming they all share a background and understanding. This bias is also called by some authors the curse of expertise.

And cheaper than store bought. Over the years, we invested in food processing equipment to make food ourselves. Meat grinder, large stand mixer, good knives, meat slicer, pasta machine, canning equipment and supplies. Saves tons of money in the end and easily paid for themselves in short order.

Check out the small section of your grocery store called produce. It's the one without all the processed crap. There are fresh fruits and vegetables there. Good luck on the price of them!
The problem here is that their definition of food "processing" is not meaningful. They are not defined by their nutritional value, but literally by the process by which they come into existance. I dont see the problem with food being made by means of industrial production so long as the food is proven to be safe to eat, and either provides actual nutritional value or is clearly advertised as a treat with little to no nutritional value.
We should not be banning any product simply because it is unhealthy in excess. People should have the right to enjoy what they enjoy. It's up to the individual to make appropriate choices for their own health, and up to the manufacturer to provide sufficient information for the individual to make an informed decision.
Grocery stores have entire isles with sugary sodas, candy, cookies, chips, snack cakes, frozen pizza, high-carb frozen meals and ice cream. It’s wall-to-wall garbage everywhere you look. There are already warnings on everything -- they're called nutrition facts labels. Biggest problem is people's inability/unwillingness to read them.
Most food at Aldi's seems to have very few ingredients unlike our American foods that have paragraphs of description.
Have you heard of secret GRAS? Food manufacturers can stuff ingredients into food without the FDA having passed eyes on them. What are they called? They're nested under "spices" and "artifical flavors." Not everything is listed on the ingredients label.

@@TheDragonSeerYes, "generally recognized as safe" -- understandable for some substances, not for others. NF labels may not list every ingredient, but generally, using them can help one deduce whether or not something's okay to eat. It's pretty rare for a product (especially an ultra processed one) to have only unassuming-sounding ingredients listed.
If people did research and read the ingredients before buying they would never eat these dangerous foods.
It’s absolutely disgusting what companies can get away with in United States.
What's so frustrating about these "Ultra Processed Foods" is they were not always this horribly awful for you. They were still processed, but NOT to the levels they are today. For example, a bag of Doritos in the 80's was made from non GMO corn, there was no Corn Syrup, tons of artificial dyes, harsh preservatives, highly processed oils or other addictive chemical's added. The ingredients ranged from 8 to 10 ingredients in the 80's but now they are all the way up to 26 ingredients as of 2024!... That's way too many additives and there is just no need for all that, so even eating a single bag of those chips now, will harm your body, versus eating a single bag of the same chips from the original formula without all the extra crap!...
I have the point of view that:
1) Its the industry/producers fault to provide those kind of unhealthy foods
2) its the consumers fault too...ITS ALWAYS A CHOICE TO BUY/EAT IT!
But honestly banning certain ingredients would be far more rational way...to get the obesity handled properly.
It is almost impossible to avoid them completely in the US.
I'm going to the supermarket and it takea me around 5 minutes to just see a regular food not uktra processed. There are wayyy too many of them.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that the goal is to avoid them completely, but that it shouldn't make up 50%+ a person's regular diet.
A lot of these "convenience" meals are at the inconvenience of our long-term health.
Did you even watch, 70% of grocery stores have heavily processed foods, and more often than not the “healthy” options are 2x more expensive than the other. It’s not the consumers fault, it never was and I think we need to stop blaming consumers for the greed of the industry
Not for children

Ultra processed, sugar laden, empty calorie foods start in childhood and lead to what we have now, a crisis of obesity that is so bad that we are Forced to give people extremely expensive weight loss medication’s that they must stay on for life and that have the possibility of bankrupting our healthcare system. These warnings have come too late unfortunately.
Yes please. Also reclassify what is called "food".
Deadly nightshade, ebola, and plutonium are "natural".
It's not something you necessarily want to handle.
It's referring to the tea itself, not all the ingredients. Plus "natural" is not a regulated term.
Those are just buzz words that they use to sell products. They mean much more than you think they mean.
Should’ve been like 40 years ago and maybe America wouldn’t be obesity central
Including bread and yogurt?
Deeming so many foods as ultraprocessed is an overly broad, vague categorization....
Should instead be based on the health of the additives used as well as amount of added sugar etc
Bread and yogurt are definitely bad.
