I can't help mentioning my favorite method for generating ability scores. 4d6 drop lowest and make one switch between two scores. That way you can tweak the character in a way that makes it viable for whatever class you wish, but also makes the characters really unique and surprising. Oh, and I don't use bonus/penalty on xp.
