Nymph or wet fly? Dave Hughes' All-fur Hare's Ear

  • While the all-fur style of wet flies have been around for more than a hundred years, Dave Hughes can certainly be credited with popularizing them in the 20th century. This Hare's Ear version is equally effective when fished actively as a wet fly or dead drifted as a nymph.
    Hook: #12-16 standard wet or 1x heavy
    Thread: Orange
    Tail: Hare's ear (guard hairs)
    Body: Hare's ear dubbing (underfur with a few guard hairs)
    Hackle: Squirrel body fur (in split thread or a dubbing loop)
    Tools demonstrated in this tutorial:
    Stonfo Dubbing Loop Clips: jsflyfishing.com/products/dub...
    Stonfo Thread Splitter: jsflyfishing.com/products/thr...

    Nymph or wet fly? Yes, definitely. Thank you very much. Buggy is so good. No splitting hares about it, that technique make a good looking fly. (So sorry. Couldn’t resist.) I haven’t done it in quite a while. It’s very worth doing. It also works well with scrap marabou fluff from the base of feathers.Thanks for bringing it up , Matt.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great note Bob! Others have mentioned using the base of marabou in a dubbing loop but I've never tried it. I might just have to do some experimenting. I just got back from the farm tonight and did a quick Halloween name-the-streamer video for Monday. Fun stuff. :-)

    A solid classic fly to add to the box. Plus some cool technique to add to the resume. This fly says this guy is a fly fisherman. Plus as a tier, it says he knows what he is doing. Love it all the way around. Great video Matt. Thank you buddy.

      Wow, that's some high praise! Thank you my friend. I can certainly tell I've gotten smoother in the couple of years since starting this channel. Probably because I used to tie every few weeks, and now I'm tying several times a week. I guess having a channel kind of forces me to tie more often. :-)

    These all fur wets are FANTASTIC flies and a must have in any wet box. They can be tied as small or as big as you like for any species all the way up to big bass hooks. The great thing is you can tie them with any game animal you can kill or pick up off the side of the road in your area. Squirrel, rabbit, coon, coyote, possum....ANYTHING. Polly was the man!

    Great tie of Dave Hughe's fly. I've never purchased, tied or fished a fur fly. Very unique.
    I've used the split thread technique but use Tim Flagler's method of unwinding the thread and using a bodkin to split the thread which I learned from a great Florida tyer, Phil Pope in tying sessions at my local fly shop. The video is really cool and I use many of your techniques when I tie. Thanks for the videos and keep 'em coming.

    Hi from Kansas City 🎣🌆 Dave Hughes.
    That's a good fly. Nice job. When I 'm splitting the threads to make a loop first I spin the thread to flatten it out then I use something smooth and small about 1/8th in and run the thtead back and forth , I use a top of of a broken rod. Then split the threads and continue with the fly. On my clips I put on a small rubber band just down from the very front of the clips , this holds the materials better. Thanks for your time and knowledge good health for you and your's 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes

    All-fur flies are great. I've just been tying a series of nymphs in the last two weeks-each one just using normal fox fur. The under fur is amazingly fine fr dubbing. while I use the nice long guard hairs for a tail and collar (dubbing loop for that). I got the idea from seeing the Fof Squirrel pattern on You Tube. :Tomorrow they will get a chance to see what they can do. :-) -)

    Nice wet fly, well I went out four times surf fishing and let me just say the fish have won. It’s like when I started with the fly rod. I would like to get good at it but will see. I learned a lot about what not to do🤪

      Well Jim, you've caught as many fish as I have in the surf. A big zero! I just got back from the farm for the weekend. Mostly work, but a couple hours on the river Saturday night. And not a thing! Which was crazy because the weather was beautiful! Nothing hatching so I probably should have used nymphs, but I just can't pass up dry fly water if I think it might work. And I did miss a few takes so they were interested, but I just sucked it up. :-) And BTW, I've got an off-schedule Halloween video tomorrow so make sure to tune in and think up a cool name!

    Awesome wet fly Matt 🪰. Is that style also called a "flymph"? Whatever you call it I like hair hackled flies, they're very buggy, especially with wild cottontail fur/hair 👍 I've tied them a lot in a loop or sort of spun them around the hook but never split the thread. I've heard the brand or type of thread makes a difference on the ease of splitting it, is there? I've had one thread spread apart, like floss, so much I couldn't use it 🧟to tie a fly let alone split. That was some off brand thread I bought for the color, it had a Union Jack sticker on the spool, that's it. When I seriously got into tying I used Danville of various sizes. Thanks for the techniques. At first glance that fly looked like a Betters bug, probably the burnt orange thread and the speckled hairs gave me that impression. I'm still digging that GS "Merryhat" 😜👍Have a "boo-tiful" weekend 👻buddy🧛🎃

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great note Joe! I'm not sure what that Union Jack thread is, but I do think that UTC is the best for splitting. Some thread comes kind of already corded up. Danville is kind of like that and anything called "Euro" thread. And these don't easily split. As for flymphs, Dave Hughes does have a chapter in his book on them, but he doesn't specifically call these flymphs, but simply all-fur wet flies. He's got different chapters on both. I think the main difference is that flymphs can have feathers (hence, not ALL-fur). Happy Halloween to you! I just got back from a weekend at the farm. Only a couple hours fishing (skunked), but plenty of work on the tractor. And I'm publishing Tuesday's video on Monday since it's the Halloween themed streamer. :-)
