What this Warden has done at this prison should be MANDATORY in every state prison in the US. He is brilliant, has compassion and has given those locked up, hope and a reason for living . A 95% success rate = A+! And thanks for making this video-the talent of these men will live on in their work. EDIT: His wisest statement was speaking to the recidivism rate for the US (65%) and he said the money spent for THOSE systems is "stupid money." I'm using his phrase from this day forward. When people serve their time, they need to leave prison with a certification, a degree, a skill so they can start their life as adults that want to show the world they can contribute to society.
@@karlhingus7118 you’re missing the point about redemption. You don’t punish to make the victims feel better, you punish so they learn their lesson and change.
I love this story as much as it disturbs me that Maine doesn’t parole people, especially with the programs they offer being so successful.I wept for the inmate sentenced to 75 years not even knowing the details of his crime. He “seems” rehabilitated at this point of his sentence.
What a lovely story. Such a shame that some of us make such fatal mistakes and ruin their lives. Everyone has a talent, you just might not know it. I wish I had the answer to solve this. Keep up the beautiful work. Support your local artists.
When I saw the wood carvings it reminded me of my dad ,although he owned his own business,he always did work with wood carving,he made a picture out of cherry wood the frame was cherry wood ,then he carved a rose inside it,after he retired he would spend hours in or garage with his myriad of skill saws ,taking old family photos ,making blocks of wood into squares honing them ,wood burning them ,placing the photo on it then decoupaging it in place ,this was wonderful,I hope these gentleman find some semblance of peace while practicing this ,if that’s even possible while incarcerated.
I wish all prisons were like this. Not all prisoners will probably thrive like this, but to be given the opportunity to change their minds/perspective/lives……
Sad part is that all prisons used to be called correctional facilities because the offered opportunities like this. However during the tough on crime era, the perception changed from redemption to lock them up and throw away the key. Hence now a days it’s extremely rare to get a degree of any kind( including a GED) while in prison. Which leads to an extremely low recidivism rate of 20%
What a great story!! Everything beautiful.. THAT TABLE…wow!! This tribute brought tears to my eyes. Sad other states don’t follow in these programs. What a wonderful warden. Wished Texas had this…and store!! They do have a prison museum but units are very limited on craft shops.
I am completely blown away by this segment a lot of people do consider them throw away and maybe a lot of them don't deserve forgiveness but what these men can accomplish is beyond beautiful and amazing....hats off to the warden
Great to see in USA ,if only in Maine . We have VISITED this amazing store. Amazing work ,this what the rest of US needs ! to help reform the prisoners with courses, art work. 95% rate do not recommit ,due to courses. This could help with mental health issues with courses and Crafts , I had love of my life commit suicide because could not find help ,money and could not get social security in US. not been able to work, this would helped make her feel wanted .
Oh my goodness, this is just wonderful for these men,I can’t imagine how it must be having to be incarcerated with no,hope of ever being free again ,the work is beautiful.
Just imagine if more institutions of incarceration had more programs like this? First of all these people make money for these places which takes away some of the taxpayers burden but even more so the worth that these men and women get from this is truly enlightening for some of them. Obviously there are some who are in prison for heinous crimes that are beyond any help at all. They are truly evil persons. But for most of them I'd say that programs such as this prepares them for real productive life outside. And they feel like they can contribute to the community they are in. Seems to me that this is nothing but good.
Can't imagine life without art. Humans have expressed ideals, thoughts and feelings through artistic work for thousands upon thousands of year's, beginning in caves. Creativity In my opinion is one of ways we are most like God, we are all made in His image. When an individual is incarcerated that part of them should be encouraged. Our ability to imagine and bring thing's into reality is phenomenal. This is wonderful. ❤ Happy Holiday's what a great uplifting piece. Thank you, it'll be humane if other institution's followed their example. Blessings 🕊
Imagine if these inmates had been given the opportunity to have the tools to develop their crafts before they committed a crime. I find this to be such a tragic waste and it just shows you that if these folks had the seed money they needed to get going in their own businesses imagine how much better the world would be!
I think that the best thing that can happen to someone in a correctional facility is this. No matter what crimes they've committed, this is the ultimate road to doing something valuable and rehabilitating. I would love to see more prisons doing this.
That last verbal interpretation of the humanity of the majority of incarcerated residents in any prison says it all eloquently. Thank you for asking the questions, show casing their thoughtfully created art pieces and giving Maine prison residents their dignity. All prisons must stop "stupid spending" taxpayer's hard earned $$$$$$$$$$$! Compassion, transparency, integrity and accountability for all!😷🙋♀️
CBS Sunday Morning: you made me cry tears of joy with this week’s episode. Firstly, with the Charlie Brown story and now this magnificent piece. The human spirit can always triumph over adversity if given the right conditions to grow. Thank you.
This is an admirable advance in the right direction. Please see a video called How Norway's Prisons Are Different From America's We can have our revenge on people - or we can rehabilitate them insofar as possible and help those who are in prison for life redeem themselves to whatever extent they can and help defray the expenses of imprisonment. Those who are in prison on lesser offenses most certainly need every opportunity to put their lives on the right track.
I like the programs that help the dogs that are unadoptable, train and take time to socialize the dogs that have behavior problems. They even have programs where they get to help on farms and take care of the farm animals.
This is what ALL SCHOOLS AND PRISONS should teach!!! For everyone 💝💝 this story touched my heart and police need to go to school of compassion! 🙌🌈 95% success rate is mind blowing. That warden needs to teach a prison reform class too.
There is some amazing usable art being made at Fort Madison Iowa at the Mens Prison. Rocking Harley Davidsons fore kids that are so beautiful and will last forever. Along with so many other things. Toys for tots should buy the majority of the toys they give from these prisons.
Most state prisons have craft programs but not all allow the producers to collect the profits. Best expectation is a small stipend per piece, and it's SMALL. Most programs are either unfunded or boring af. Most college courses are useless out in the real world. Ohio. Could have beautiful gardens but don't. Have room to run self contained water treatment programs but don't. Have ppl out here willing to beef up music donations for new instruments, .but don't The prisons in this country are completely immoral and counterintuitive in the extreme. It's ignorant.
This segment blew me away. Charlie Jones is quite eloquent and talented. The crochet piece that was shown (they did not mention the artist) was beautiful and impressive as a piece of sculpture.
He's not getting out and I have no issue with that. I assume it was pretty violent. At least he's using his time to be a better person. Now of course things in the future might change and he may get some parole hearings. If he is lucky the family of the victim might end up writing a letter to the parole board or even testifying in person offering support. And I am sure that will go a long way.
Does anyone know if there is a way to shop, look and purchase any of these beautiful pieces? What can be done to get such programs into other prisons? If not, there needs to be!
I am likely more of the lock'em up and throw away the key type towards those who do terrible things. Gotta say, though, I al all in on what they are doing in this piece..... to the point where I wish that I could be a part of it. This program is a very good thing.
Why is there no mention of the family members who suffered a loss due to their crimes…what are their thoughts….if someone is sentenced to that amount of years…I don’t believe that where shop lifters! What about remorse for their actions…then perhaps this program works..
Amazing, I truly believe some of these guys would have never know about their talent(s) unless they were lock away. It's sad but now they have the "time" to pursue those interest.
That table tribute piece by Mr. Jones, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and art!
Absolutely! I was wondering how much he could get for it.
He's a murdering monster

The talent pool is deep. These men are not letting the time do them. This is a model for prison reform nationwide. Building lives back better.

We have a cribbage board made by an imprisoned person from Maine and it’s a work of art!
Wow what a wonderful story- showing the humanity of all people

This creativity push should probably start in early childhood. It would prevent a lot of juvenile delinquency & chemical dependency.
