    Just finished my first racoon mittens following your videos to a T. Came out way beyond my expectations as i am not very crafty. Really appreciate the detailed descriptions, amazing videos! Next will be the coyote hat and eventually a pair of mittens to match. Hoping to make a skunk set as well but i haven't trapped any yet, but such is life. Youre the man! Thanks again.

    My aunts make mollusks and mits in the Yukon and they sew them inside out and when done fold them right side out

    OLD Leather Smith here, I hand stitch everything, I made 2 pair 4 a Canadian Mountie 1 was unlined his idea the next pair I lined with Rabbit it keeps you warmer. When I stitch fur I use the baseball stitch, no binding no bulking just a straight stitch line. If you don't know how I would be happy 2 teach you. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

    Can I use moose leather instead of sheep skin? Would this still be warm?

  • @metroplexchl

    Forgive my ignorance on this....but would it be warmer if the fur was on the inside?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’m sure it would be warm as well, but as your hands sweat the fur would become matted, tangled and hard to clean.

    First of all, awesome mitten series. Plan on making some from raccoon hide very soon. Had a question though. My coon hides tan well, dry, stretch and soften up. But the tail stays wet for weeks. I split it and scrape it the same as the rest but they always take so long to dry, literally about a month. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

      I bought a bunch of shearling from tandy. It is 100% wool but on a (cotton I believe) backing. You can buy it by the yard. I've made an oilskin sleeping bag and lined it with this shearling and camped out in 30 degree weather under a tarp tent and small fire and stayed plenty warm. I plan on making a pair of mittens with it too and just contact cementing a split onto the back of the shearling. It is cheap, but still real wool and super soft and warm

      I'm more of a modern buckskinner myself in IN. I like 1800s stuff but make do with modern materials the same way buckskinners/trappers/traders made do with modern materials in their time

    How to make or where to buy those paper "models" (missing the right word here) for mitts depending on hand size? is there some kind of rule to add 20% on the hand print or something like that? could someone point to some page or youtube video it would be great

    lil trick-- make the stitches quite close together around the thumband yolk where palm and thumb meet... and anywhere you need a smooth -- less crinkled/bulky seam.. then lightly dampen ( I just use a wet washcloth) and take a hammer and pound stitches flat... I find something hard to stuff inside thumb-- pound from outside --- not hard-- and if you have a small rubber mallet-- even better...keep stitching close and even -- will finish smoothhhh

    Sir: I am making a pair of mitts per your pattern. I am a novice sewer and having a problem where the out side of the thumb stitching stops. When I sew the back on, to the outside of thumb I am getting a pucker at that point and some times I have an open area at that spot. I have noticed the two divots at the opposite ends of the thumb stitching thru palm . You did not address the two divots in your video. Could you explain the reason for the two "divots" and why they are there. Thank You.

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FELIX ESCARENO SR.
      Hi Felix, I believe you are referring to the seam allowance? You will see this at the 2:00 mark on the video. The seam allowance is the extra 5/8" that is around the top portion and the thumb of the mitts. Both pieces of material need to match this extra seam allowance exactly, with no bunching as you are sewing or both of the pieces will be misaligned. The divots will not be noticed as the 5/8" seam allowance will hide your work once you flip your mitt right side out. Are you sewing over the seam allowance? Are your stitches too far apart? Just wondering. I believe my stitches were around 3/16" apart at their widest.
      Hope this helps Sir.

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry about the abrupt ending!
      I simply folded the cut edge over itself inwards making the fur flare out. I used a regular sewing thread that was slightly thicker, I purchased it at saddle shop to sew the seam upon itself to flare the fur. (Regular needle and thread) Hope this makes sense.
      Sew the end of the seam just attaching it to the inner mitt portion. Not going through to the other side of the mitt!!! Just puncturing half way through the material.
      Just enough to adhere to the mitt not leaving an obvious seam along the way...sorry, I should have shown that step. My bad
