Both are fantastic, but Captain Beyond wins for me because Rod Evans is at his best on that album. A stunning performance.

Warhorse were cool, but the Captain Beyond debut is just massive. Far more unique, as well.

Never heard of Warhorse but that
Captain Beyond album is such a joy ride of a rocker. I love the mix of hard rock, funk and psychedelic music. However I'm very encouraged by the sound of Warhorse.

Thank you!! I've heard of Captain Beyond, but never heard of Warhorse. Just listened to the whole album and it's amazing. Thanks for turning me on to them. Have you ever listened to Starcastle? Their singer is the ex REO Speedwagon singer Terry Luttrell. Good stuff.

Tough choice, Pete. Warhorse is great but,I have to go with Captain Beyond. That album is front to back excellent! Their 2nd album Sufficiently Breathless sounds nothing like the 1st album. Which isn't a bad thing but you already know that. It reminds me of Santana. Thanks, Pete. Have a good time in Boston.

Captain Beyond i bought in '72 as a sophomore in HS. Me and my friends looking back at the lineage and this just added to the 'kick ass' ness.
Plus it was dedicated to Duane Allman. man...
Dancing and Can't Feel Nothing are all i've jammed with but YEAH!!! They slay. EVH was a fan as well.
Warhorse i've never heard of. Guess i should check 'em out.
    Thanks, Pete.

'Captain Beyond' to me is one of the top twenty albums of all time. Having intimate knowledge of the music that the bandmembers were part of before this album and loving all that came before enhances this tremendously. This album is, I guess you could say, 'prog-hard-rock', maybe. Everything is kick-ass but tasteful. Riff after riff after riff. Just when you think they can't come up with any more killer riffs, they add another one. Bobby Caldwell's drum playing is 'beyond' words....Rod Evans vocals, sublime. A perfect almalgam of people, talent and time period. It doesn't get any better than this, IMHO. I have the original LP with the 3D space guy graphic on the silver background. On my copy the 3d section was put on crooked which makes it even cooler. Listen to this one all the way through at one sitting and you're going to need a cigarette at the end-even if you've never smoked. Great video as usual Pete!

It's about time Captain Beyond got some well deserved attention. I'm not familiar with Warhorse, but I plan to be. Captain Beyond is one of my all time favorites. They were soooo different, too bad they kinda flew under the radar. In 73 I wore out my vinyl copy, AND my 8 track. Great - Great album...

As with Pete: Deep Purple might be my favorite band of all time. I like all albums to a degree. Some more than others and enjoy all the related bands like Ian Gillan Band, Gillan, Rainbow and Whitesnake. IF I would rank every Deep Purple AND related albums both these albums (Warhorse and Captain Beyond) would be placed quite high. I agree that Captain Beyond is more original but Warhorse actually has hit me harder personally. That might change over time thought. However both albums are definitely worth checking out!

Two fine proto metal albums from the early 70s. Warhorse, for me is a very good British workmanlike album, but Captain Beyond has that sprinkle of magic and wins by a comfortable margin for me.
On a related subject how about an album battle between, Humble Pie's Smokin' album and The Faces A Nods As Good As A Wink etc. Think that might be an interesting battle.

i don't know if it was mentioned below but the band was signed to Capricorn Records because Duane Allman told Phil Walden to sign them. Duane was good friends with Bobby Caldwell and Larry Reinhardt. In fact there was a lot of talk Duane wanted to add Bobby to the ABB as a third drummer / percussionist. He did sit in with the ABB the weekend they recorded the At Fillmore East live album. Bobby was on the same bill with Johnny Winter And. I can't remember if he was on the original album but he has for sure on the latest extensive release.

Captain Beyond self titled is one of the greatest hard rock albums of the 70's and still holds up today. Warhorse isn't bad.Pretty heavy at times, but pretty dated sounding and nowhere near the level of Captain Beyond. Rod Evan's sounded so good with this band and the whole lineup were superb musicians.

The warhorse album busted the myth that Nick Simper”s bass playing was substandard.Purple” s camp always said the reason they got rid of Nick was he couldn’t play that kind of music, but I think Ian Gillian probably told them if you want me in the band you’re gonna have to take Roger too

An excellent video! I love both these albums an equal amount. Both heavier in the studio than Purple Mk.1, and both as progressive in the sense of being adventurous. Burning and Raging River of Fear would be my choices to represent these two. By the way, either of Nick Simper's Fandango's albums vs Hughes/Thrall - any chance? :)

Hello Pete, I have a project for you, I want you to make a poster, art work, showing the tree of rock, like shown in the film School of Rock, the trunk, main limbs would be something like blues rock, psychedelic, hard rock, metal, progressive, art, all of the branches, twigs, and the bands would be the leaves of different sizes according to their contribution, just an idea but if anyone could pull it off it would be you. Check out the blackboard in School of Rock. Call it Sea of Tranquility Tree of Rock or something like that.
