When Less Is More...

  • I want you to look at this graph.. It details the amount of smartphones sold in the United States alone, and within, I want you to notice that there are two key players, Apple and Samsung. You can go as far back as a decade to notice they've pretty much dominated the market, so much so that its made competitors like LG or HTC fully exit the business, and new players to struggle.
    Now I wish I could give you the specifics of which of their phones sells most, but neither company discloses this data. Some say it’s the Pro Max for the iPhone, others that it’s the more-affordable Galaxy A Series for Samsung. I know, two completely different extremes that don't really compete against each other. It would be easy to assume that this is because Apple sells more expensive phones, but that's actually not accurate. Samsung has more variants at higher price tags than Apple does, and no worries, that'll be a story for another video. For now, let's try to level the playing field. Each company has a base model that they consider is worthy of their flagship name without any Pros, Pluses or Ultras next to it, and that it addresses what their chosen target is looking for.
    On one corner we have the iPhone 16, Apple's latest base model, which by the way is probably one of the most evolved in years. On the other we have the Galaxy S24, truly a phone that's very close to an update, but which remains pretty worthy for this comparison in ways I'll explain soon.
    I'm Jaime Rivera, and yes, welcome to my channel. Let's see who wins between iPhone 16 and Galaxy S24.

    As a person who just switched to iOS from android "3 months now" I curse at least once a day on how dumb iOS is. There are extra steps to everything! simple tasks on android take years on iOS? eg. there is no consistent "back button" its either at the top far left (WHY!?) or you have to swip up and go home not back! The control center cant access your settings app... like what?? face ID doesn't automatically unlock to home screen! you still have to swipe and tap and drag argh. then there is iPad os ...... OMG kill me now!

    • @reduchimaki
      @reduchimaki 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +110

      you can swipe to the right from the left....FaceID doesnt automatically unlock so you can still view your lock screen without automatically unlocking and take you to the home screen. for the control centre issue, either make a shortcut for it or use spotlight search. you're just used to android. should've stayed there. i have no issues with any of my apple devices. and contrary to you, i find android complicated and inconsistent. but hey, you do you.

      That's the thing they conveniently choose to ignore. Android often have to compete by going bigger on numbers. Whether its RAM, Battery, Camera Megapixels or resolution. Let the android has the same ram, battery size, camera megapixels and resolution as the iPhone and see how well it performs. Pound for pound the iPhone will knock that Samsung out the park.

    On the RAM part, android is ART 2.1 runtime, so all apps compile to native code(except web apps), so memory and storage requirements difference between iOS and android is miniscule, maybe 1-2% in iOS's favor.

    honestly I would consider 120hz the minimum for phones nowadays, its sad to see its not available in the base model of the phone 16

    Wait.. you admit that the S24 is smaller, thinner and lighter - but then out of left field gave all the points to Apple *for having more colour options*????
    Ok - I think we can toss objectivity out the window here.
    The problem with any "which is best" article is that "best" is almost entirely subjective and unless it's well defined *before* starting, it's really just an opinion.

    • @JaimeRiveraTech
      @JaimeRiveraTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You answered your own question at the end 😉. All reviews are subjective. I said “my points go to” because I like colors. You don’t have to agree 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I’d honestly say that a 60Hz panel is a dealbreaker for people right out of the gates. Budget-midrange phones like the CMF phone and others come with 120Hz, and it’s just a bad look on paper first of all to have a 60Hz display on the flagship phone.
    In practise, I notice a difference, but don’t care too much, but I may bring that factor in when buying my next phone
    I think another big dealbreaker hardware wise is the lack of a telephoto lens on the iPhone. Yeah, 2x crop is perfectly great, but there are many occasions where I need to zoom in, and the photos just look garb when I do. Hot take, I would honestly trade the main lens for a 0.5 lens of the same quality with good software anti fisheye, paired with a 2x/3x telephoto.

    • @JaimeRiveraTech
      @JaimeRiveraTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wish more people saw it the way you do. Sadly most people don’t care, and this is why it continues to be a feature

    • @nuggo3068
      @nuggo3068 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Once it becomes standard, the only defining differences between a flagship Android phone and a flagship iPhone will be niche features, like the S pen, and personal preference in OS.

    I tried the galaxy s24 ultra and it was amazing. But because I’m deep into the apple ecosystem and enjoy it, it didn’t last. However, Samsung has done an amazing job with their S-series devices this year and I’m excited to see what they do with the S25 series

    • @JaimeRiveraTech
      @JaimeRiveraTech  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do love the S24 Ultra. There's so much of it I depend on like the S Pen. My problem with it is that at its price, it's not the best camera on a phone. That said in the US you don't have much choice. Obviously I'm exposed to a ton of the other brands abroad, so my thought process is broader. That Leica tuning from Xiaomi is just incredible. I wish the S24 had that level of character.

    In one take you said you prefer accurate to brightness, and then go back on that and say the iphone front video is visually appealing (which i must point out, is brighter)...

    • @JaimeRiveraTech
      @JaimeRiveraTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Visually appealing doesn’t = brightness 😉. There are far more elements to it, starting with the execution of the dynamic range and the larger codec.

  • @TenShinChoejin

    Why I am getting this feeling that Apple will still stick to 60hz in next year's base model just to make the big boys pro series more lucrative.

    • @JaimeRiveraTech

      Dude. All good. I just let them talk. I’ve given comparison to Galaxies for years. Samsung made a poor choice in keeping this base at 8 gigs of RAM during the AI boom. Up to them if they wanna buy it 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

  • @liviurosca
    @liviurosca 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I always had 2 phones, iOS and Android. From 13 Pro Apple became my main phone but still using Android daily. I always liked the basic S series. Compact, light, flagship performance, decent camera. The only downside being the battery. If you plan to use the phone for 2 years get the basic S. If you want a longer term phone and you don’t mind the 60hz display, get the iPhone.
    However at similar money you can get the last year pro, a better device, a flagship. That’s it.

    • @JaimeRiveraTech
      @JaimeRiveraTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use two phones as well. I do disagree on getting the base Galaxy S for 2 years, mainly because of those 8 gigs of RAM. These new AI models are getting pretty powerful and useful, and the Plus variant is just better prepared for it. The fact that AI got Apple to double the RAM on its iPhone is enough of a statement.

    • @liviurosca
      @liviurosca 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s true but not everyone it’s using AI on daily basis and if they use, most of the time it’s cloud based not local. I bought S22 for my mom 2 years ago on good discount. She just want a good camera, decent updates and a fast phone. She use Copilot to find food recipes. 😁 I’m sure you are right with AI models but not anyone wants this, for most of the people it’s still a curiosity.
      S24 it’s pretty much the same phone with incremental improvements, i think it’s a good flagship for the people that don’t want a flagship.

    I can’t decide between the two, I live in a region where the galaxy s24 has the exynos chipset, which performs worse than the chipset in the iPhone 13-14 which had the A15 bionic…
