Thank u for a warm memory! I took went to Bennigan's for their Monte Cristo sandwich!!!!! When they went out of business, I then drove 3 hours to the next closest Bennigan's to me which was in Wichita, KS. It too went away and I always look for a Monte Cristo on restaurant menus. If they don't have it, a Cuban sandwich is my next closest favorite. But long live the Monte Cristo from Bennigan's.
The first time I had one of these was 1978. My ex wife and I were married about 4 days and we honeymooned at Disney World in Orlando. I ordered this at one of the eateries there. My ex and I have remained friends over the years and I still like this sandwich. I might have to make this soon now.
My first Monte Cristo was at the Disneyland hotel in Anaheim, Ca. in 1978. It must have been a Disney specialty. If you haven't tried the Disney Grilled Cheese sandwich, do yourself a favor and try it. There are YT videos how to make it. Enjoy!
When I went to Benigan's I would almost get the Monte Cristo. I remember they gave you raspberry jam to dip it in. It was awesome. I'm going to have to make this.
Omg Bennigan’s is also where my husband and I started eating them, back when we were dating. I’ve been wanting to make these but couldn’t find the right recipe, I think this one is definitely it! Thank you!
I haven’t had one of these in years ! My brother used to say that it’s French Toast on steroids ! He loved them …… thanks Catherine for sharing this recipe ….. I will make these soon !
What a unique sandwich with sweet and savory components. Looks good, especially served up with jam. I’ve switched from using canola oil to avocado oil. It’s healthier while still being a ‘flavorless oil’ for this type of use. Thank you for sharing!
I've only seen and had the french toast version whether homemade or from a restaurant. Made some last night for supper. It's way easier. Just make enough french toast to make however many sandwiches you want. Cook the first side, flip, then add your cheese to your top and bottom slices to melt while the other side of the bread cooks, then add your meat to the bottom slice. Place your top slice with the cheese melted on top and dome the sandwiches to warm up the meat. I use an electric griddle and keep it at 300° to cook low and slow so the cheese can melt and the meat can warm thru without burning the french toast. I'm sure the battered and deep fried version is awesome, but if you don't feel like messing with deep frying the french toast version is an alternative.
The best monte Cristo I had was 30 +years and it was amazing. The restaurant is closed now soooooo good yummy. Thank you for sharing Catherine have a blessed day stay safe and healthy. 🙏❤🙏❤🙏😋😋😋

I used to order the Monte Cristo at an Irish pub called the Boston Beanery. It was basically the same ingredients but no powdered sugar or jelly and the sandwich also had tomato on it.
