The issue with the m3 20mm is the cycle rate and bullet velocity. Firing at 750 rounds a minute at around closer to 850 meters a second, then 900. At rank 5, most aircraft have the speed to beat the guns gap time between ejecting a spent shell and loading in the next shell. Expample 1 I've learned this the hard way when i flat scissor with and an attacker in my F2H. 3 times, 3 fucking times i have line up my crosshair into his line of path perfectly and when i prefire just before he comes into my guns he fly by unharmed each time cause his flying faster, coming in and out of my sights then my guns can shoot. #2 window of opportunity, you only have a few precious seconds of pumping as much lead as you can onto the target cause you might not get another chance. Shooting from a side aspect is not advisable recommended to shoot from the rear or headon, which goes into my next point bullet velocity, 1000 meters a second is the minimum standard of having a functional weapon in jets slower then that you'll end up leading on target to an existent that its practically no longer on your screen which kills the whole purpose. Cause in order to lead ahead, you need to have a visual on the target to adjust your groupings. Sadly, that means you have to get close and only shoot when you're close. A tall order when facing jets faster than you and really risky when closing in on jets slower, then you would likely result in an overshoot
It's not AS bad as it might seem. I kinda dig it both design wise and gun wise, as people often underestimate it, until their engines are full of those 20mm shells. It does require a lot of patience to use though, like too much at times.
