I played Pirates at pre-release, super fun. I had two Siren's Ruse, two Depths of Desire, and Two Run Aground. All of those combo very well with Hostage Taker, especially after you cast the creature you exiled. With one Captivating Crew and Entrancing Melody, I was often swinging at my opponent with three of their own creatures.
I know this isn't primarily a "deck tech" channel, but I would absolutely love to see your take on Standard Merfolk. I don't imagine it would play too differently from Pirates, or that it would even be as good since the two tribes are set up for very similar strategies, but I'd still be very interested to see what you came up with for the tribe!

Our Pirate decks are...very different. I guess that's a good thing. Also I gotta say Ruin Raider was not as good as I wanted it to be. I tested against a lot of mono red and Raider was the worst card in the deck in that matchup
Yeah, I'm not a fan of Ruin Raider in some of the early deck lists I was brewing with, either. It felt like I kept dying to attrition in games that drew to turn 6. Also tried blending some energy in the mix with a light splash of non-pirates such as Glintsleeve Siphoner.
im glad you both had different buids tbh. it gets the community thinking about the builds they want to make with the cards and ratios they want to use.
I'm thinking of going with R/B aggro Pirates. The removal/hand attack is looking pretty decent this time around, also get to do something with my Ragavan tokens.

Shockstar vampires are good it's just that there's been an over saturation in recent blocks. luckily we had a break with amonkhet and kaladesh but yeah a lot of vampires recently
Seriously, played like 7 matches with this and won 5. This deck is the best Ixalan build I've played yet. I put in Fatal Push for Walk the Plank, Metallic Mimic for Censor, and Walking Ballista for Ruin Raider, and of course 4 copies of Drowned Catacomb. I also don't have Fell Flagship.. but there's not much room left for it. One match I stole God Pharaoh's gift with Hostage Taker, re-cast it with 2 hostage takers in the graveyard, stole his Hazoret and Rhonas next 2 turns.... it was just ridiculous. I balanced it to 24 lands. 22 just wasn't working for me. Also, I didn't really like the new Jace very much until I saw what it does in this deck. It's silly. Great build dude.
Wedge, I have been following your Commander 2017 upgrades but it lacks feline ferocity due to ixalan spoilers.... Please make feline ferocity upgrades, the cats will love you for it~
Are people running Cancel in standard or are there better counters? I know double blue is more difficult to handle but it's a hard counter and standard seems to have mostly soft counters.
But Wedge, Hostage Taker isn't budget anymore? Any ideas on what to fix? And also, can we get more worst cards ever and color pie philosophy? I love those.
If you build the upgrade version then I think you would want Metallic Mimics instead of the Ballista. Mimics make all your Pirates better and fits better with the Plunderer giving him more targets to add counters to.
I miss when the deck techs would show the number of each card in the deck. :/ I get WHY it's done (generate more clicks on the TCGPlayer link) but I, personally, can't access TCGPlayer's site from my network (it's locked down). I would love a return to the numbers beside the cards. Also, price on this skyrocketed, thanks to Hostage Taker jumping with Scarab God use.
Bontu's Last Reckoning is a board wipe which doesn't target creatures and your opponent chooses what to sacrifice with the Trial so it gets around Hexproof.
Why do people care so much about worst cards ever? I don't get it... anyway like the look of this deck! Still looking forward to black / red pirates and booty deck 😄
Is a grixis list coming? The Admiral herself is only 4 mana, and and aggressive deck like this shouldn't have a problem with three guys hitting every so often or even every turn. I honestly think Admiral Beckett Brass is standard playable.
The weird thing is that people consider New Jace to be good because it's easy to ultimate and get a bunch of them, but nobody seems to be aware of what they want to do with it. It doesn't gain you card advantage and the tokens it makes are incredibly bad as a pay off, not to mention you can only make one of them before you have to tick him up again. It's like 10% of Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, 50% of Jace the Living Guildpact and 40% of nothing. Historically I believe Cunning Castaway to be among the five worst walkers of all time. It's Tibalt levels of bad, except Tibalt is actually kind of funny.
why is nobody playing siren's ruse on u/b pirates? blink your pirates to protect them or snatch a new permanent with your hostage taker, AND draw a card...

im working on a blue black artifact deck that work with deadeye plunderers and metallic summonings, gonna be awesome to play with.

Bob is strong enough that 'bad bob' does not have to imply the card is bad. A card with the nickname 'Bad Gideon AOZ' could still be a scary card lol.

Strictly Better MtG Your pirate deck also had a far larger overall cmc, meaning it was more punishing.

I was curious as to why wanted scoundrels isn't in the deck, seeing as it is a 4/3 for 2. Did you find the 2 treasure to be too big of a flaw?

I'm sorry but how does Last Reckoning and Trial of Ambition work against Carnage Tyrant? It has hexproof.

Hexproof only prevents the Tyrant from being targeted. Neither of the mentioned cards needs a target.

Hexproof means it cant be targeted by spells or abilities your opponent controls, those two spells does not target the Tyrant.
