Her unique placement was already there. That sort of ping in her sound was present already. Aside from a great width to the face through the mask area she appears to not have any great physical advantages to help her at her maturity to create such a jaw dropping sound. She was tall but of normal size in every way.
No real signs here of what was to come. It is a typically lyric voice not unlike Melba's, for instance. What I like and what I hope others here is the clarity even though the recording quality is bad. There is no scooping, slurring, fake darkening or even the slightest attempt to throw up the voice as we do now. Very nice to hear her humble beginnings.
I think you can still hear a certain richness that isn't present in lyric sopranos. I'm sure also the recordings probably don't represent the voice fully. I wonder how a dramatic soprano is supposed to even sound on a 1914 recording? I don't think she really sounds too different to e.g., Nordica or Gadski.

@@babydrane Her voice was nowhere near ready for Wagner at this point. She worked like a bear, and it developed greatly. What you can hear is a very sound method.

Слишком много прозорливцев, слышащих уже тут её великое будущее, которое открывается им вместе с именем поющей. Самое трогательное, что Флагстад и на вершине карьеры сохранила эту естественность, какую-то высокую бесхитростность и природную органичность звучания. Родник, ставший водопадом, но не потерявший своей чистоты...
